My Sister’s House is planning to hold a fund-raising gala and auction on Saturday, February 16 at the Birchwood County Club. This year’s event has special significance as it honors the memory of Cynthia “Cymp” Joyner, who was killed in 2012. Joyner, 41, was the victim of an apparent murder-suicide on April 26, 2012, when she was shot at her workplace at the Westridge Grill on Sunset Road in Rocky Mount.

It's been a busy two weeks at Peachtree Baptist Church. Last Sunday, March 18, the service had its emphasis on the Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina. Dr. Patrick Fuller, who is affiliated with the organization, was the guest speaker. Also participating in the service were seven girls, along with two of their counselors, from Camp Duncan. {This is a wilderness Camp, located near Aberdeen.} They sang and spoke, sharing some of their experiences.

NASH COUNTY -- Tremel Davis' season-long dominance resulted in his selection as the Big East Conference Boys Tennis Player of the Year.Davis, a junior at Northern Nash, was the Class 3-A East Regional finalist and also qualified for last weekend's Class 3-A State Championships in Burlington.Davis was defeated in the opening round of the states by Cameron Union Pines' Will Hart (6-3, 6-1).Wilson Fike's Lee Matthews was tabbed as the Coach of the Year after guiding the Demons to the league crown, along with a 15-0 overall record in the regular season.

2312.Spring Hope Elementary students celebrate Black History Month
To celebrate Black History month Spring Hope Elementary hosted two local celebrities, Annie Parker and Gladys Johnson.  Ms. Parker, 86, worked at Spring Hope for thirty years while Ms. Johnson, 92, spent twenty-eight years at the school.  Both touched many lives during their tenure at Spring Hope Elementary.  Principal Bebe Wall recalls how both women made all of the children feel special and went out of their way to make sure each child was cared for.

2345.Nash County suspends Eastpointe's funding
Nash County's Board of Commissioners have suspendied paying any of its allocated funding to Eastpointe until its leader meets with the board to discuss recent allegations of misuse of funding. A state audit revealed questionable spending as well as nearly $550,000 in kickbacks by the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Eastpointe Human Services. Eastpointe is a Managed Care Organization (MCO) that oversees, coordinates, and monitors the mental health, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and substance use and addiction services for 12 counties, including Nash County.

Two Nash County veterans were honored for their service on Saturday during a flag raising ceremony.The Joint Veterans Committee of Nash and Edgecombe Counties hosted the ceremony, which is held each month at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount. They were given in memory of Linwood May's sister, Frances Marlene May, who as a young child was fatally injured in an automobile accident as she was waiting to board her school bus. This incident occurred on December 4, 1941.

ELM CITY -- As the sun began to set on what was a beautiful evening last Saturday afternoon, fans, crews and drivers filed into the gates at County Line Raceway. A total of 100 laps of feature racing action were on tap for the evening in the event dubbed the Spring Fever 100. The first feature event of the night was the Super Stock Four Cylinder division. The starting order was set earlier in the evening by two heat races won by Austin Larrison and Damien Bryant.

ROCKY MOUNT - The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) has announced that eligible drivers without a REAL ID can now renew their driver's license online for a second consecutive time. This change, effective immediately, stems from Senate Bill 245, signed into law last week by Gov. Josh Stein."We encourage our customers to renew their driver license online if they're eligible. It's fast, easy, and helps reduce wait times at our offices," said DMV Commissioner Paul Tine. "By choosing online services, you're freeing up space for those who need in-person assistance."

ROCKY MOUNT - Even a pair of team losses in the Big East Conference haven't dampened the spirits of the surging Nash Central High School girls tennis squad.Central, coached by Mike Mosley, opened its Big East slate last week with losses to strong squads from Rocky Mount and Wilson Fike.But the Lady Bulldogs bounced back on Monday by stepping out of league play to finish a regular season sweep of the North Johnston Panthers.Competing at home, Nash Central dropped just one individual match en route to securing a convincing 8-1 team conquest at the NCHS Courts.

Sierra Hearp (left) received the Kate Parks Kitchin Grant-in-Aid from Mu Chapter, NC-Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG). Sierra is a senior at Barton College, and is a student teacher at Rocky Mount Middle School. She plans to teach mathematics, and hopes to coach softball, as well as pursue a master's degree in education.

2392.Spring Hope finds leak in water bill revenue
Mike Meyers, of Environlink, informed Spring Hope Commissioners on Monday night that the town is losing around $18,000 in revenue due to customers getting water from the town but meters not reading the usage. The news was given to commissioners during their regular meeting on Monday night. Environlink now handles the town’s water, sewer and public works responsibilities and provides a monthly report at each board meeting.
