Flags will be flown at half-staff in Nash County today, in honor and memory of Trooper  Bobby Gene DeMuth, who was killed on Saturday while attempting to deploy stop sticks on US 64 during a chase. The chase began in Raleigh, when a police officer noticed a vehicle driven by Christopher McCoy Rodgers, 40, of Williamston.

1608.Local farmers weigh in on proposed land use plan for Nash Co.
Nash County's draft future land use plan seeks to help the county grow but some farmers are concerned about how it will impact their farmland.Nash County Planning and Inspections Department Director Adam Tyson said the current land use plan was adopted over 16 years ago.He said it is necessary to update the plan every five to 10 years, according to how a community is experiencing growth and change.

A middle school reassignment plan was presented to the Nash-Rocky Mount School Reassignment Committee on Monday afternoon. RED OAK - A former Northern Nash High School Ag teacher had a birthday last month - his 83rd. Most people might mark the occasion with cake, cards or balloons, but that wasn't the case for Allan Buss. He went for a 'little' bike ride - 83 miles, one mile for each year- and took a bunch of his biking buddies with him.This isn't the first time the biking group - which doesn't have a name but has members from Red Oak, Rocky Mount, Hollister and Pinetops - has celebrated Buss that way; this is year four, and every year, the ride gets longer.

Spring Hope Elementary School will do whatever it takes to raise money in the fight against cancer, just ask G.W. Pierce, who on Friday night was crowned the 2012 Womanless Pageant Queen. Pierce, who was known as “Eva-Ka-Diva” in the pageant, was one of 13 participants in the annual pageant, which is Spring Hope Elementary School’s largest fundraiser for the Nash County Relay For Life.

ELM CITY -- County Line Raceway roared back to life on the 3/8-mile clay oval last Saturday night as five divisions of racing excitement were on the card for the weekly racing series.First on the track was the ARCO Restoration Limited Sportsman division. Two heat races, won by points leader Matthew Bissette and John Proctor, would normally set the field for the 20-lap feature event, but Bissette was slated to start at the rear of the field for the feature after winning 3 in a row.

Nash County Commissioners agreed to move forward and seek bids on a new Emergency Medical Services Building, which will be located on the Nash Health Care Systems campus. The special called meeting was held on Monday morning and lasted over three hours. Tim Oakley, of Oakley and Collier Architects, presented the site and building plan for the proposed facility.

1640.Locals help tornado victims
Local farmers, 4-H'ers and others in the community have pulled together to offer support and assistance to a local family devastated by a tornado earlier this month. Marina and Larry Strickland's Nade Road home and farm in Middlesex received significant damage after a tornado came through the area on May 13. Damage was also reported along Massey Road and Brantley Road in the Middlesex area.

On Sunday, Mother's Day was observed at Peachtree Baptist Church. Sanctuary flowers were given by JoAnn Blankenship and Penn Pace in memory of their mother, Ann Downey Savage, and their grandmother, Minnie Wester Savage. The choir sang "Take My Life-Lead Me Lord", under the direction of the pastor. For the Children's Sermon, Beverly Wilson talked about all of the many things that can be found in a mother's purse. Then she told them that the one thing that a mother does not keep in her purse is her love for her children.

There was a full moon week before last, so I'm going to blame that for the total anarchy that broke out in one of my writing classes. We were talking about food writing and barbecue came up and a student asked, "Are you talking about that stuff with too much vinegar?" There were a couple of gasps, and if I'd have had pearls, they would have been clutched. I assumed she'd been to a chain restaurant and tried to remember that not everyone is fortunate enough to have grown up in Eastern North Carolina.

Purple and gold will be the colors for the Third Annual Warren “Sneak” Lewis 5K Memorial Race, in honor of Lewis’ daughter, Lauren, who just started her first year at East Carolina University. The race is set for Saturday, September 13 in Middlesex and already, over 300 runners have registered for the race. The race is in memory of Warren “Sneak” Lewis, III, who was shot and killed while serving a murder warrant with the Eastern North Carolina Fugitive Task Force.

NASHVILLE - When Melissa and Mike Bradsher helped re-energize the Birchwood Country Club Swim Team in 2005, they had only 12 kids to work with. Birchwood’s burgeoning program is now 65 swimmers strong, and the club racked up its first victory in over five years last Thursday against Roanoke Valley.

A Nashville man was recently honored with The Old North State Award for his dedication and service to the State of North Carolina. Norman Mitchell was presented the The Old North State Award on October 4 by Governor Beverly Perdue. The award was established by former Governor Mike Easley and is presented to outstanding North Carolinians who have a proven record of exemplary service and commitment to the state and their community.
