304.Mill Chill run raises over $38,000 for MS research
ROCKY MOUNT - The 8th Annual 'Mill Chill' 4-miler and 1.5 Fun Run took place at the Rocky Mount Mills Dec. 8, and organizers are thrilled with tally results: the fund-raiser, which contributes 100% of monies raised to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, hit an all-time high this year, raising over $38,000.The amount raised last year was about $32,000, according to Ursula Forrester, who is involved in the event along with husband Michael and daughter Caroline Forrester. Michael and Caroline created the Rocky Mount Mills 5K race earlier to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

305.Fellow chamber member and friend will be missed
Last week, members of the community and the Nashville Chamber of Commerce lost a dear friend. Beth Mills, who was only 46 years old, passed away Tuesday, August 19, after a two-year battle with cancer. Beth has served on the board of directors of The Nashville Chamber of Commerce and as vice-president. She also served on several committees and was one to always make sure details were taken care of.

As tradition, students enrolled in Renny Taylor's advanced placement US History class at Nash Central High School have completed a project which will be positioned in a very historical place in Nash County.An 8-foot x 4-foot timeline showing the history of Stonewall Manor in Rocky Mount and the United States from 1800 to 1980 will be placed at Stonewall Manor this week just in time for an upcoming open house at the historical landmark. Open House will take place this Sunday, Sept. 24 from 2-4 p.m.

336.Spring Hope business shut down
A Spring Hope business that has been around since the 60s is being shut down. The Ash Street Recreation Center has to close down by June 9 after an investigation on a nuisance property by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. According to a press release, the Ash Street Recreation Center had a history of criminal activity including drug violations, fights, assaults, robberies and one fatal shooting, which occurred in the 80s.

Area youth had a chance to showcase their hard work at the 86th Annual Eastern Carolina 4-H Livestock Show and Sale, which was held April 4 and 5. Nash County Cooperative Extension Director and 4-H Agent Sandy Hall said Nash County youth represented Nash County well with their participation in this year's event. COVID has caused a decrease in participation but Hall said numbers are starting to get better, which is encouraging to see.

The Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe, located in Halifax and Warren Counties, is gearing up to celebrate their 54th annual pow-wow. For the 2nd year in a row, Brooke Mills Simpson of The Voice's 13th Season, will be offering a concert on Saturday afternoon."We are thrilled that our tribal member, Brooke, is coming home to celebrate with her family and tribe," said Chief Dr. Ogletree Richardson. "Last year, her concert was a real treat to our already beautiful pow-wow."

Lois Blanche Shearin Joyner went to be with her Lord and Savior on  Sunday, March 6, 2011.  Born March 15, 1933 in Nash County to the late Jasper Luscious and Bettie Will Harper Shearin, she was the second born of four children.  Lois was a life member of Nashville Church of God.  She worked 20 years at Rocky Mount Mills and then retired after 20 years of dedicated service from Abbott Laboratories.

396.BASEBALL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS IN SMITHFIELD
The Rocky Mount Red All-Star Team recently took first place at the Smithfield Baseball Tournament. The event was held last weekend in Johnston County. Rocky Mount defeated Clayton by a 13-3 margin in the championship contest. Earlier, Rocky Mount had secured victories over South Johnston (5-4) and Garner (4-0 thanks to a no-hitter).

The Envy-us Steppers are working to win their third straight state championship title. The competition is April 30th at 2 p.m. and will take place at Millbrook High School in Raleigh. Admission is $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets can be purchased from coaching staff of Envy-us Steppers. The group will have try-outs April 11-14 at Imperial Center from 6-8.
