ROCKY MOUNT -- Growing up in Gary, Indiana, Mike Mosley always wanted to be a teacher and a coach. He even made a career pact with several classmates -- one that he was reminded of during a visit back to Gary several years ago for a high school reunion. “Somebody mentioned that I ended up being the only one who did that,’’ Mosley said. Mosley’s 29-year career made an impact on the lives of too-many-to-name young people in Nash County.

On Thursday night, Sue Shearin and Big Mike Tyndall picked up JoJo Ricks for a ride around the community and a trip to Red Oak to Griffins Store for their special Thursday night $6.00 pizzas. They went back to Sue's house for supper and lots of laughs. I think I feel a regular habit forming here folks. On Wednesday afternoon, with key board in tow, Sue Shearin picked up JoJo Ricks (again) and off they went to Rusty Chasons house in Rocky Mount to sing Gospel songs. Sue's playing as always was beautiful, but JoJo's singing was best described as "a joyful noise."

For the past two Sundays, Pastor Whitehouse preached on the topic, “Connecting Life-the Eternal and the Temporal”.  It was based on Scripture from Ephesians 1:15-23.  He said that the more time we spend with God, in prayer and Bible Study and trusting Him through life, the more your knowledge of Him will increase.  The choir sang “Take My Life, Lead Me Lord.”

2522.Scholarship to open doors for ECC students pursuing skilled trades
Current and prospective Edgecombe Community College students interested in entering a career in the skilled trades, will now have a new source of support. The Edgecombe Community College Foundation has established a scholarship fund, with donations from Roger and Gaile Taylor. The Calvin Davenport Skills and Trades Scholarship, named in memory of Gaile's father, will provide $30,000 to support students pursuing a degree, diploma or certificate in programs such as welding, small engine repair, construction academy, automotive, collision repair, cosmetology, plumbing, HVAC-air conditioning and agribusiness. Successful scholars may also receive a set of tools tailored to their trade upon completion of their program.

Arthur Freeman and Vivian Rae Langley Bunting were honored with a 50th anniversary celebration on November 24th, in the Lewis Family Life Center of Englewood Baptist Church. The celebration was hosted and given by their three children and their spouses, Art and Catherine Bunting of Clayton, Lynne and James Taylor of Wake Forest, and Libby and Dean Caviness of Nashville. There were slightly over a 100 in attendance.

Mildred Griffin attended the Rocky Mount Sanitarium Nurses’ Alumnae on Oct. 7 at Gardner’s Restaurant with 11 members present. The tables were beautifully decorated in keeping with Thanksgiving with pumpkin placemats and individual scarecrows for each one. Joyce Phillips brought the devotional stressing ABC (admit, believe, and commit). She emphasized the need for them to admit who they are, believe, and commit through communion.

A group of local men have formed a new Optimist Club whose primary goal is to promote a junior golf tournament. The Mahler Thorp International Optimist Sports Club was chartered on April 26 with 35 attending. The club is a first with Optimist International in that membership is not limited to any specific geographical area. The club will serve to help coordinate the Mahler Thorp Memorial NC East District Qualifier for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships.

Adult Christians and Christian youth attend Sunday school in order to study God’s Word and become more mature Christians. Studying together allows us to grow together and encourage one another. Today we had 96 with 3 of those visitors in Sunday school. We welcome our visitors. A.J. Jones and Matthew Morgan read our verses for today. Brother Bob Watkins had asked both boys to read the verse today and they both agreed to do so. Therefore, he let both of them read a verse. Both had to choose the verse they wanted to read. Isn’t it wonderful that our children and youth are so willing to serve any way they can. Thank you boys.

A first county-sponsored Juneteenth celebration, held June 19th for Nash employees on the third floor of the Nash Administration building, attracted a steady stream of visitors who had the chance to enjoy a historical display, fellowship and refreshments. 2584.Senior Games registration deadline is this week
The registration deadline for the annual Down East Senior Games, which officially closed March 10th, has been extended through this weekend, but participants will have to register online.The Down East Senior Games, one of 54 local games sanctioned by North Carolina Senior Games, are open to residents 50 years of age and older from Nash, Edgecombe, Halifax, Wilson, and Northampton Counties.
