Governor Roy Cooper has authorized a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murders of James and Janice Harris and James and Peggy Jo Whitley. The two couples were shot multiple times in what the Halifax County Sheriff's Office is calling a home invasion.

Dillon Crawford, son of Mike and Mary Beth Crawford, and Tet Hughes, son of Andrew Roy and Kathy Hughes-Roy, have been nominated for the Park Scholarship at NC State University. The Park Scholarship provides full funding of four years’ tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, travel, and personal expenses.

1430.Student earns scholarship at RMA
Isabella Nicole Daza, daughter of Hernan Daza and Tanya Perez-Daza, has been awarded this year's Ann MacPherson Weaver Memorial Scholarship at Rocky Mount Academy. Currently an 8th grader at Red Oak Middle School, Daza will attend RMA in the fall on a full-tuition scholarship, valued at approximately $48,000 over four years.The Weaver Scholarship was established at Rocky Mount Academy in 1986 in memory of a 1984 RMA graduate who had lost her life to cancer earlier that year.

The Coopers Ruritan Club, described by member Peggy Winstead as "small but powerful," held its Appreciation Banquet Nov. 16 at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Elm City, with a crowd of fifty celebrating the installation of new officers and the presentation of multiple awards. The club, in its 71st year, is one of only three local Ruritan Clubs along with Oak Level and Momeyer "that still cooks," and cook they did, with Vice-President John Sprague carving a roast and serving the dinner along with a line of helpful hands.

1440.Fire dept.treasurer charged with embezzling
The treasurer of a local volunteer fire department has been charged with embezzling over $100,000 from the department’s account. David Lowell Joyner, Jr., 28 of Elm City, was arrested last week and charged with embezzlement of over $100,000 and corporate malfeasance. Joyner served as the treasurer for Coopers Volunteer Fire and Rescue and had worked with Nash County EMS. Nash County EMS Director Brian Brantley said Joyner was no longer employed with Nash County.

Students are suffering, parents are struggling and science says it's time for kids to go back to school.Those words were echoed on Saturday, February 6 during a rally held outside the Nash County Public Schools Central Office Building.The rally, "Let The Kids Learn in Person," was attended by over 30 parents, students and other members of the community, who voiced concerns over what remote learning was doing to the students in the school system.

1448.NPD raises funds for Special Olympics
The Nashville Police Department raised a little over $27,000 for the Special Olympics through its recent fundraiser.Nashville Police Chief Anthony Puckett said it was the first time the department has partnered with Special Olympics for its Law Enforcement Torch Run portion to raise money for nearly 40,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities though one of their officers helped the organization last year.

PRIZED CATCHES. Nash County resident Sammy Huddleston (above) caught a 38-pound striped bass during a fishing expedition on Jan. 14. Sammy, 5, is the son of Mike Huddleston -- the Co-Owner of G&H Offshore Lures. To bring in the fish, Sammy used a MoJo with a parachute rig made by G&H. Sammy was able to catch the whopper despite only being 58 pounds himself.

LYNCHBURG, VA. -- Lynchburg's Dorsyss Paulino was 3-for-4 with two runs and Joe Sever drove in two while going 2-for-4 and the Hillcats escaped with a 5-4 win against the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at Calvin Falwell Field in a Class A Carolina League baseball contest. Reed Harper was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the loss for Carolina.The Mudcats (70-68, 36-33) led only once in Sunday's loss in Lynchburg.

I'll admit I'm still salty about Pluto being demoted as a planet.It happened 15 years ago and I'd mostly gotten over it. After all, I haven't been into space stuff nearly as much since "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" went off the air in the 1980s.However, those feelings have been stirred back up.

The most vivid memory from my early childhood years was my dad stringing lights on an old cedar tree in our front yard which at that time I compared to the Tarrytown Mall tree. Hindsight, the tree wasn't all that large but was huge in my eyes as a little munchkin.

How do you put into words the tremendous contributions that Cliff Joyner, his family and staff have given to Nashville? That was a question this week from our ace staff reporter Amanda Clark. My answer wasn't very helpful because I too am having difficulty narrowing all of the great things they've done into a couple thousand words. It's impossible. But we've tried our best to scratch the surface.
