2401.Local woman begins tour of duty
A typical Mother's Day celebration for Rocky Mount resident Elaine Swanson involves going out to a nice restaurant with her two children, Sherry and Bobby Layton. But this year, Swanson had to give up that celebration as she said goodbye to Sherry, the younger of the two on Friday, May 12 for the 31-year-old's first tour of duty in Iraq.

As we find that the second greatest recession of our time is still partly with us. The largest cheating and conniving ever occurred with regard to our banks and Wall streets behaviors; and more ponzie schemes and CEOs.  We see that the only stable elements in our system for now are the ones unaffected by the dynamics of cheating and loss.

2427.Cultural traits are not so memorable
From an acknowledged curmudgeon's perspective, how a culture celebrates holidays could be a way to define that culture. In the US of A, the birth of the Messiah is first acknowledged on the PBS program Nightly Business Report where economic indicators for the Christmas season detail the future of the big box stores. Local newscasts often focus on visits of Santa Claus to shopping centers. Then comes Easter, which logically should be a Memorial Day of the grandest sort considering that Memorial Day celebrates the ultimate sacrifice.

Senior Adult Day was observed during worship service at Ephesus on Sunday followed by a fellowship meal in their honor. Jennifer Glover led the Children’s Sermon and honored the senior adults as we “remembered when”.  We were reminded of what prices we paid for things many years ago as compared to today’s prices, such as a movie costing $0.35 in 1950 and $7.25 today.  Yes, times have changed, but God’s love for us and His promises to us never change!

Knowing how intelligent and astute Soapbox readers are — and knowing that they know we’d NEVER blatantly pander to them — we figured we’d talk about the stock market this week. When I was a young boy, the stock market was that place in Rocky Mount where cows and other assorted livestock was sold. However, today, in the age of Scottrade, Ameritrade and any other brokerage that might not have gone out of business in the five minutes since you bought your paper, it means something else.

Looking back on 2006, we have to wonder where time goes. Seems like we just got started on '06 and in a blink of an eye, the year was gone. Reflecting on 2006 for the town of Nashville, we went through some sad times, losing town notables such as Bobby Jeffries, retired Nashville Police Officer and town Santa; Elsie Clark, a volunteer to many civic organizations and our own 'Minnie Pearl'; LaVern Freeman, retired Nashville Fireman and businessman; and though he wasn't from Nashville, he touched a lot of lives here, Mike Lancaster, Southern Nash Band Instructor.
