ROCKY MOUNT - Joseph Herbert "Sonny" Slater Jr. passed away on May 23, 2023. He was born on April 2, 1932 to Joseph "Herbert" Slater Sr. and Lucille Slater. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Thomas "Tommy" Slater.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Linda Leonard Slater and daughter, Susan Tompkins of Wilmington; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; an aunt and uncle and several nieces and nephews.
A service will be held on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Edgemont Baptist Church, 1622 West Mount Drive, Rocky Mount with Reverend Michael Edwards officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service until 5:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Edgemont Baptist Church. A private family burial will take place at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
