A Nashville teen was killed instantly and a 15-year-old passenger injured Saturday night when their all-terrain vehicle crashed into a barn on Wildlife Road.

Superintendent Rick McMahon presented the Nash-Rocky Mount (N-RMS) Board of Education proposed changes to the current student academic achievement policy that take an aggressive stance to help students succeed.
One hundred is Ruby Stallings' lucky number, at least for this year. The Nashville resident turned 100 on April 14 and was given a birthday party at Nash Grover Manor, where she resides, with over 100 of her closest friends and family attending the special event. Her children attribute hard work as the reason for Stallings' long life.

Nashville officials held an emergency meeting last week to approve a resolution requesting the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) appropriate funds for a new library and town hall. Now, the town will wait and see if USDA approves the $2.28 million loan before announcing plans for the new building.
Historic 1850 homes as well as homes built in later years will be showcased in the 2006 Spring Homes Tour presented by Preservation Warrenton, Sat. and Sun. April 29 and 30.
Air Force Senior Master Sgt. 1st Sgt. Faye J. Ellison has retired from the U.S. Air Force after more than 22 years of military service. Prior to retiring, Ellison served as a wing information management functional manager for the 437th Communications Squadron at Charleston Air Force Base, North Charleston, S.C.

LOUISBURG — Collin Haggerty's family moved to Nashville 10 years ago, and one of the first people he befriended was Tripp Dubose. One decade later, Haggerty and Dubose, now juniors in high school, have remained close pals as students at Wilson Greenfield School.

ROCKY MOUNT — Rocky Mount captured its second straight Rocky Mount Gryphons Easter Baseball Tournament title last Tuesday evening with a 6-2 victory over Clayton in the championship game.
RED OAK — Ashlyn's Run will be held this Saturday on the cross-country course at Red Oak Middle School. The event will feature a 5K race for all participants, along with a two-mile event that is designed for students in eighth grade and below.
Eunice Langley Batchelor, 84, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006. She was born in Nash County on January 9, 1922, the daughter of the late Willie Lindsey Langley and Emma Baker Langley. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William Thomas Batchelor, Jr.
Matthew Keith Denton, 19, died Saturday, April 22, 2006. He was born in Nash County on September 2, 1986 to Ronnie Denton and Susan Woodruff Denton. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Roy and Pearl Denton.
NASHVILLE – Dercie Earl Bailey, 85, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006. Funeral services were held Friday, April 21 at Forest Hill Cemetery in Nashville.
WILSON – Cuyler Deems Best, Jr., 66, of Wilson died on April 24, 2006 after a lengthy illness. A native of Wayne County, he was the youngest son of the late Cuyler Deems Best, Sr. and Frances Herring Best. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University and taught vocational agriculture in Nash County for over 30 years.

The Nash County Sheriff's Office has arrested four suspects in the Monday night shooting death of 26-year-old Derek Thomas Smith. Smith, of the Sandy Cross area, was visiting a home at 8836 David Way in Sharpsburg when two men reportedly entered the home wielding a 12-gauge shotgun.

After three and a half years of working on the new zoning ordinance, Spring Hope's Board unanimously approved the first reading during their meeting Monday night. The amended ordinance was approved with no discussion though the board thanked those who had worked long hours to get the ordinances ready for approval. Commissioner Clyde Best said he felt the ordinance would prove to be an asset to the town.

W.L. Greene Chorus students visited Trinity Retirement Village and Nash Grove Manor on Thursday to sing songs to residents. The students who participated volunteered for the special event. The group sang several songs at each location. Pictured in the top photo, Marah Banks and Jamal Gill lead students in song.
Though voter turnout for primary elections is typically low, Nash County Director of Elections Tracy Reams expects the Sheriff's race will encourage more people to come out and vote this year. As of Monday afternoon, 161 people had taken advantage of early voting since it began on Thursday.
