1501.Halifax Sheriff deems homicide as gang related
A quadruple murder in the Glenview Community of Halifax County remains unsolved but Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said they are closer to resolving the case. Tripp said this week that the murders of Janice Harris, 72, James Harris, 88, James Whitley, 76 and Peggy Whitley appears to be gang related but would not go into more detail.

CHATTANOOGA, TENN.  -- A four-run second inning propelled the Chattanooga Lookouts past the Carolina Mudcats 10-7 at AT&T Field on Sunday afternoon in a Class AA Southern League baseball showdown. Carolina (25-32) established a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Lookouts batted around in the second against starting pitcher Alexander Smit (L, 1-5) for a 4-2 lead.

1506.NHCS gears up for Lights of Love
Christmas seems far away, but the Nash Health Care Volunteer Auxiliary is making plans for the 2009  Lights of Love holiday remembrance celebration. For $5, a light for the Christmas trees in the hospital lobby may be purchased in memory or honor of a loved one. The trees will be displayed in the hospital lobby throughout the holiday season, and the names will be recorded in a Book of Remembrance, which will be on display. Names from the Book of Remembrance will be read as a part of a special tree-lighting ceremony that will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 24.

ELM CITY -- County Line Raceway, the three-eighths-mile clay track that is beginning its 25th anniversary season, was the site of the inaugural Roger Matthews Memorial 125, a 49-lap Late Model event with a $2,500 winning prize that honored the memory of one of the track’s favorite racers. This event, which was held last weekend, was scheduled originally for Oct. 27 of last year but Hurricane Sandy wiped out those plans.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Huntingdon College, under the direction of 14th-year Head Coach Mike Turk, and Maryville College, led by third-year Head Coach Shaun Hayes, tied atop the 2017 USA South Athletic Conference Preseason Football Coaches Poll. The Hawks and Scots shared last year's USA South championship but it was Huntingdon who earned the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament by way of its 28-24 win over Maryville during regular season play.

NASHVLLE - The Nashville Police Department has been recognized at national and state levels for continued contributions to the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), the largest year-round public awareness and fundraising campaign for Special Olympics. One of the police department F-150 patrol trucks is now emblazoned with a special wrap contributed by Custom Car Trims of Rocky Mount, and will be on display at a LETR event Nov. 18 in Charlotte.

1523.Peacemakers awards scholarship to Rocky Mount student
Peacemakers has awarded the Millie S. Morris Scholarship to Takia Moody of Rocky Mount. Moody attended Nash Central High School and plans to enroll at North Carolina Central University to pursue Criminal Justice studies in hopes of one day becoming an attorney.The Millie S. Morris Scholarship was established in March 2017 in memory of Mildred "Millie" Shields Morris of Red Oak. Morris was a long-time educator in Edgecombe County and Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools who passed away in June 2016. The scholarship is administered through Peacemakers of Rocky Mount.

Though she is gone, Mary Hobbs McIntyre will never be forgotten, especially at Nashville’s Harold D. Cooley Library. The Friends of the Library unveiled a special bronze bench in honor and memory of McIntyre at a special ceremony on Saturday morning. McIntyre passed away in March 2008 at the age of 71.

Nash County recently announced a program that will help locate people with cognitive impairments faster. Project Lifesaver was announced during a press conference last Monday morning. Project Lifesaver is a rapid response program that locates people with a cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down Syndrome and Dementia, that wander away from their caregivers.

NASHVILLE – Oliver “Bum” Julian Green, 79, died Saturday, June 16, 2007 after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Nash County October 1, 1927. He served in the U. S. Navy World War II and retired from Burlington Industries of Rocky Mount and from The Sewing Source, Inc. in Spring Hope. Mr. Green loved his family, his special pet dog, Frank and enjoyed planting and tending his garden every year. He also enjoyed grilling chickens for his family on weekends and on special occasions.

A Nashville native plans to return home to host a special event in memory of his father. NASHVILLE -- Nash Rec continues to make waves as part of its thrill-a-minute 2009 Nash-Halifax Swim League schedule. Nash Rec, the defending league champion, continued its successful summer last Thursday with a 528-334 home decision against backyard rival Birchwood. The league will have two more weeks of action before the annual N-HSL Championships on August 1. This Thursday, Nash Rec will be at Birchwood, while Westridge will travel to Roanoke Valley. The July 23 finale will feature Roanoke Valley at Nash Rec and Westridge at Birchwood. Last Thursday’s results were as follows:

1550.Nashville remembers Mayor Evans
Nashville's Town Council approved a resolution on Tuesday night honoring the memory of former mayor Warren Evans, who passed away last Wednesday at the age of 95. Evans served the town many years. He was a town commissioner and cemetery commissioner from 1955 to 1957, as town treasurer and building and grounds commissioner in 1957 and later served as the town's mayor, from 1991 to 2007.

Nash County was recently added to the list of counties who are eligible for federal disaster assistance in the recovery from Hurricane Irene. All 31 members of the Coopers Ruritan Club were named this year's Ruritan of the Year at the club's annual Appreciation Banquet on Thursday, November 21. Past President Danny Tyson announced the award and said the vote was unanimous and due to all the hard work the entire club has done this year. "I usually give a big. long speech and do all this fancy stuff about how great this person done and all they've done," Tyson said. "Because of all the work that ALL the Ruritans have done this year, every member of the Ruritan Club is Ruritan of the Year this year."

Elizabeth Winstead has been awarded this year's Ann MacPherson Weaver Memorial Scholarship at Rocky Mount Academy.An eighth-grader at Bunn Middle School, Winstead will attend RMA in the fall on a full-tuition scholarship, valued at more than $48,000 for four years.The Weaver Scholarship was established at Rocky Mount Academy in 1986 in memory of a 1984 RMA graduate who had succumbed to cancer earlier that year.

He works with an elementary school tutoring program at Englewood Presbyterian Church and has served on the board at Rocky Mount Preparatory School since 2019.

1574.County halts funding for My Sister's House
Nash County has halted any further contributions to My Sister's House until the county is paid money it says it is owed. The issue was brought to light on Monday during a Nash County Board of Commissioners meeting. Board Chair Robbie Davis started his comments by expressing concern over the county giving money to organizations and not having any type of accountability of where the funds were going.

1578.Water line break shuts down courthouse
A water line break caused the Nash County Courthouse to shut down last Thursday and Friday. The leak happened around 3 last Wednesday afternoon, said Mike Tolson, Nash County Public Facilities and Utilities Director. The leak started on the third floor and was caused by some routine maintenance that was going on. Tolson said during that maintenance, a pipe busted. "Unfortunately if you are going to have a leak, it was in the worst spot on the top floor," he added.

LOUISBURG -- Southern Nash’s golf team, coached by Scott Collie, hit the links last week as part of a three-team match against South Granville and Louisburg. The event was held at Bull Creek Golf and Country Club in Franklin County, with Louisburg serving as the match host. South Granville came away with a six-stroke victory as the Vikings racked up 359 shots, compared to 365 for Southern Nash.

We were greatly saddened  to learn of the death of Doris Fay Nelms. She was loved by all who knew her. Our sincere sympathy goes out to her husband, Jimmy “Lonnie” Nelms, her daughter, Sandra N. Williams, and all other family members and friends. She will be missed by everyone, especially her family. May God Bless and comfort them is our prayer.

We had another great service at Beulah Church of Christ on Sunday morning. Beautiful flowers were placed in the church by Carolyn Hunt Matthews in memory of her late mother, Lucille Hunt, whose birthday would have been July 26. Beadie Skinner also put flowers in loving memory of her late husband, Herbert Skinner. Thank you both for the beautiful flowers.

Attention! Important Notice! On this Saturday, July 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a Vacation Bible School Day Camp at Beulah Church of Christ. This will be for all children between the ages of four to fifteen years old. Bring a bathing suit and a friend. If you haven’t registered you are still welcome, but to register prior to the event please call Amy West at 459-7893. This will give us an idea of the expected attendance and how many children to prepare for. We hope to see a good attendance for a fun Christian event.

1600.JVC remembers Nashville veteran
The Joint Veterans Committee (JVC) of Nash and Edgecombe Counties held a flag-raising ceremony earlier this month to honor the memory of Corporal Anthony Thurston Leonard.The flag raising was part of the JVC's monthly ceremony to honor a deceased veteran from Nash or Edgecombe County.
