New superior court judge sworn in

Nash County's new superior court judge says he will strive to be fair and expeditious.
Timothy W. Wilson took his oath of office last week as senior resident state superior court judge for Judicial District 7A, which comprises Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties.
Wilson said the state constitution requires judges to deliver justice without favor, denial or delay.

Nashville Council changes mind on Drake St. parking

Nashville's Town Council has changed its tune about not allowing parking on Drake Street.
Council members unanimously amended a decision made earlier this month to not allow any parking on Drake Street after agreeing to keep the street a one-way street.
Drake Street currently has nine on-street parking spots between Washington and Elm Street.

Nashville K-9 helps locate home of missing child

Nashville police found the family of a young child wandering around in the middle of a downtown street last week.
"The child has since been reunited with his parents and law enforcement is working with Child Protective Services to educate and ensure incidents such as this, do not happen in the future," said Police Chief J.T. Winstead.

Nashville man charged with break-ins

A Nashville man is behind bars accused of a one man crime spree that included stealing from a local hardware store, breaking into vehicles and pocketing a beer at Sheetz.
James Allen Moss, 52, faces multiple counts of larceny and habitual larceny after being arrested by the Nash County Sheriff's Office last week.
Moss can be seen on security video footage taking a dog kennel from Bell's Ace Hardware in Nashville while the store was closed, according to investigators.

Despite opposition, local road named for marines

A handful of out-of-area owners of Nash County property say Semper Fi Lane is too controversial a name for a rural road near Middlesex.
The Nash County Board of Commissioners voted last week to name the road Semper Fi Lane at the request of a property owner building a house on the spot.
Semper Fi is Latin for always faithful, the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Nashville woman celebrates 100th birthday

A small party with family and friends was held to celebrate Cora Clark's 100th birthday but hundreds of others also celebrated Clark's special day.
Clark, of Nashville, received around 400 birthday cards from all over the world for her special day, which was on January 5th.
Clark's daughter, Sara Rudd, said 136 of the cards came from her great grandson Davis Mills' school but the rest came from all over the world. Rudd said cards came from Belgium, Australia, France and India.

Fugitive caught at rest stop

Nash deputies say they captured an out-of-state fugitive when his stolen car ran out of gas on Interstate 95 and he tried to runaway.
Demetrius Malachi Thomas, 19 of Rural Hall, faces charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm, resisting an officer and violating probation. He received a $50,000 bond.

Deputies testify in interstate shootout case

"At that point the fight was on."
That's how Nash County Deputy Shelby Smith described in courtroom testimony last week the Interstate 95 altercation that led to her partner being shot two years ago.
"I was shooting Ford while Ford was shooting my partner," Smith told the jury about defendant Jarred Ford and fellow deputy Tommy Toney of Spring Hope.

Nash UNC Health Care is now UNC Health Nash

Effective January 9, 2023, Nash UNC Health Care has changed its name to UNC Health Nash. The move also comes with a new logo, as the hospital is adopting the new UNC Health brand that debuted in 2020.
The UNC Health system rebranded back in February 2020 with the intention of affiliate hospital rebranding to take place shortly thereafter. Due to the pandemic, that process was put on hold.

Boice Willis Clinic is a sponsor of the American Heart Association - Twin Counties Heart Walk. As sponsors, a CPR Kit was donated to the Nashville Fire Department. The CPR Kit is deisgned to meet the needs of workplaces, community organizations and schools. Kits contain everything needed to train 20 people at once in the lifesaving skill of CPR and first aid.

Nash County Sheriff's Lt. David Walker with K-9 Dako moments after county commissioners awarded the aging dog to his controller last week.
Retiring K-9 awarded to partner

A Nash County Sheriff's Office K-9 has retired after seven years on the job due to bad hips.
Dako, a German Shepherd from Holland born in 2014, was assigned as K-9 in 2015 to Lt. David Walker. The two worked together as a unit for seven years and 10 months.
During last week's meeting, Sheriff Keith Stone requested the Board of Commissioners give the dog to Walker.

Retired RM cop charged with trafficking cocaine

A retired Rocky Mount police officer stands accused of drug running as result of a multi-agency investigation, according to authorities.
Linc Oshea Brooks, 52, faces charges of trafficking in cocaine by possession and transportation; maintaining a vehicle for narcotics; and obstructing, resisting and delaying a public officer. He received a $275,000 bond.

IT PAYS TO SHOP SMALL

Ann Williams (at left) was the winner of the 2022 It Pays to Shop Local contest, which was sponsored by Nashville's Chamber of Commerce. As part of the contest, participants who shop with a chamber member send in their receipts from Thanksgiving to mid-December and are entered into a drawing for $500. SURGICAL TECH GRADS

Edgecombe Community College Surgical Technology students completed the Surgical Technology degree program in December and gathered for their pinning ceremony. Pictured (L-R) is Cassidy Ingram, Sandra Rivera, Tasha Vaughn and Jeannette McDaniel. All of the graduates have passed the National Board for Surgical Technologists and Surgical Assistants Certification Exam and are working as surgical technologists in local healthcare facilities.

Getting sick is not as much fun as it sounds

I'd been dodging germ clouds for what seemed like weeks.
Friends, co-workers, fellow congregants -- I saw them drop one-by-one.
Then, my crowd brought it into the house. It's not COVID-19, or the flu, it goes by the medical term "the crud."
It ran through a couple of members of my family right before we went on vacation to Florida.

Helping out at the Graphic has sent me down memory lane

I've been back in the Graphic office for the past two weeks and my boys have had to come with me.
Since they are homeschooled now, they've been getting their schoolwork done while I work on things at the office.
Being back at the office sure has made me reminisce.
I left the office in March 2020 when COVID came on the scene.
