Scouts donate food to My Sister’s House
A local scout group recently donated 800 pounds of food to My Sister’s House as part of their annual Scouting for Food effort.
Cub Scout Pack 76, out of Nashville, went door to door February 2 and February 9 dropping off and picking up bags of food in the Nashville area. The scouts, sponsored by Nashville United Methodist Church, collected a total of 800 pounds of food. Each year, the troop picks an organization to donate the food to. Scoutmaster Lewis Smith said they always try to give locally. More ...

Nash County’s Board of Elections has hired Whitney Davis to take over the Director position vacated by Tracy Reams in January.

Nashville to send residents survey
In the coming weeks, Nashville residents will be receiving a survey that will help with the town’s 20-year Comprehensive Plan.
The town has hosted several focus group meetings to receive input from citizens, business owners and other interested stakeholders to help gather information needed for the Comprehensive Plan. On Monday night, the Task Force met to participate in their own focus group meeting. Led by Dan Marcucci, a professor in the Department of Geography at East Carolina University, the meeting was a wrap-up for focus group meetings. Nashville native in need of kidney transplant
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of every week for four hours each day, Billy Jeffries sits hooked up to a machine receiving dialysis for his failed kidneys. He has been receiving dialysis for three years and is on a waiting list to receive a kidney.
Billy, a former Nash County resident who now lives in Rolesville, is the brother of Bobby Jeffries, a former Nashville Policeman who volunteered as Nashville’s Santa Claus during the holidays. Bobby passed away in 2006. Billy is also the brother of Eloise Holland, who still lives in Nashville, and Inez Langley, who is deceased. The Jeffries family grew up in the Taylor’s Crossroads community. More ...

Board tables teacher supplement increases
State funds for school staff salaries in the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (N-RMS) system are far below the amount needed to cover required personnel, according to a report presented to the board by assistant superintendent Tommy Finch.
At its work session Monday night, the N-RMS board reviewed a report on state formulas used to determine how many teaching and staff positions are funded by state dollars. Based on laws created in the state legislature, the state board of education allots schools funding for positions according to Planning Allotment Formulas. More ...

Burning ban back in effect
The N.C. Division of Forest Resources has implemented a statewide ban on all open burning in all 100 North Carolina counties. The ban became effective at noon last Thursday, February 14.
Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning 100 feet or more from an occupied dwelling, regardless of whether a permit was issued. In addition, the Nash County Fire Marshal’s Office has implemented a ban of its own.  More ...

Two arrested in Bailey for meth possession
Two Bailey residents were arrested after officials found methamphetamine at their homes.
Officials with the Nash County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation on February 12 in reference to a possible methamphetamine production. Two areas in the Bailey and Middlesex area were targeted in the investigation and warrants were obtained at the homes of Christopher Bryant, 35, of 8623 Strickland Road, Bailey and Sharon O’neal, 29, of 10020 West NC 97. More ...

Momeyer Board receives update on new town hall
Momeyer Mayor Kenneth Parker provided the board with updates on the new town hall project at the board’s regular meeting last week.
Parker told board members a note that was found in the wall behind a medicine cabinet would be saved and used in the town’s scrapbook. The note has the date the house was built and finished. The house was started on in 1950 and finished in 1951. The town has several items from the old house it will save to be used in a scrapbook.  More ...

Traffic stop on I-95 results in drug bust
A vehicle stop on I-95 led to the arrest of a Virginia man for drug charges.
On Monday, Sgt. Ricks, of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a vehicle stop in the northbound lane of I-95, at the 132 mile marker for a registration violation. While issuing a warning ticket for the registration violation, Sgt. Ricks noticed a smell of marijuana in the vehicle and asked the driver for consent to search the vehicle.  More ...

This is WMU Focus Week and the guest speakers were Mary and Al Whitehouse and her father, Dr. Rick Hollins. They came to give a report on their recent mission ministry to Kiev of the Ukraine. They showed a video depicting some of the conditions there, where many children are sleeping in the sewers. Burning ban in Nash County should be taken seriously
Take note, Nash County residents, there is a burning ban in effect.
Last weekend Nash County Fire Departments were busy fighting over 16 fires throughout the county, so I was relieved to see the NC Division of Forestry Services enact the ban. I was even more glad to see that Nash County had taken the ban even further by allowing them control over fires within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. More ...

Dear Editor,
In the Feb. 13 edition of The Graphic was an article by JoAnne Cooper titled, “Health insurance costs are out of control.”
I totally agree with her on this topic. I, myself, believe that health insurance plans do not cover many chronic diseases. There are a lot of people in the workplace who have health insurance, but have large deductible and a co-pay as well, not counting the high monthly premium that must be paid if we want to keep our health insurance coverage. More ...

ROCKY MOUNT -- Thanks to junior Travis Beausoleil’s fifth inning grand slam, the diamond Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan earned an 10-3 victory over Piedmont College on Sunday at Bauer Field.
