20.Nashville woman celebrates 100th birthday
A small party with family and friends was held to celebrate Cora Clark's 100th birthday but hundreds of others also celebrated Clark's special day. Clark, of Nashville, received around 400 birthday cards from all over the world for her special day, which was on January 5th. Clark's daughter, Sara Rudd, said 136 of the cards came from her great grandson Davis Mills' school but the rest came from all over the world. Rudd said cards came from Belgium, Australia, France and India.

A certain scent permeates throughout professor Michael Brantley's office. Perhaps it's the aging books furnishing the shelved alcove along the wall, or the creaky wooden paneling that holds it all together. Maybe it's just Brantley. DAYTONA BEACH, FL — Nashville photographer Mike Brantley had one of his prints chosen for the Loan Collection at the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) International Print competition held in Florida this month. Brantley’s print, “Crouching Photographer, Hidden Dragonfly,” a fine art nature print also captured First Place in the North Carolina competition and was selected for the state Loan Collection in the spring.

52.Youth offers "Little Free Library" in Red Oak
Austin Brantley wants to give everyone the opportunity to read.Brantley, 11, is working with the Town of Red Oak to place a Little Free Library at Ennis Park. The town's board has given approval for Brantley to do the library and Brantley recently finished up building the library. Now, Brantley is waiting on park renovations so he can install the library.

Michael Brantley, M.Photog.Cr., CPP,  of Brantley’s Studio in Nashville won the Distinguished Award in Social Events at the Southeastern Professional Photographers Association (SEPPA) print competition held recently in Athens, Georgia. Brantley won with “Fiddlin’ Around,” an image of a fiddler performing at Merlefest which was shot as part of an assignment for Business North Carolina magazine in 2008. The Distinguished Award is made to the runner-up in the category at the competition among the 13 member states.

62.Police arrest alleged purse snatcher
Nashville police have arrested a Battleboro man in connection with wallets stolen out of purses at Wal-Mart. Officers responded to a larceny of a purse at Nashville's Wal-Mart on June 29, where a female victime told officers her wallet was missing from her purse. While investigating, a second victime reported her wallet was also missing. Credit cards, cash, debit cards, social security cards, drivers licenses and other personal items were missing from the purse as well.

The Nash County Board of Elections will begin sending out postcards to registered voters this week with information on their new electoral districts. Nash County Board of Elections Director John Kearney said around 60,000 postcards are set to go out starting Wednesday.

The Nashville Kiwanis Club recently sponsored a fundraiser by selling tickets for four $100 gas cards. The winners of the gas cards were Lester Clemons, Becky Maynard, Keith Godwin and Rebecca Perry. Everyone rushes to the box before service begins to see all the cards that have been placed there for each of us. Dear Editor, In the paper recently, Mike Brantley used his platform, "The Soapbox" to bemoan the college loan repayments the government requires him to make. He argues that the student loan system is broken. Yet, by his own admission, he took out the debt willingly at age 40 in order to obtain an advanced degree. There was no coercion involved here. No duress.

A local 4-H club recently had youth write cards to soldiers going through basic training. Last week, one of those soldiers visited the club to say thank you. Parker Strickland, a recent Southern Nash High graduate, visited the club with his friend and fellow soldier Mitch Smith to talk about life in the military.

The Nashville Kiwanis Club recently sponsored a fund raiser by selling tickets for four $100 gas cards.  The winners of the four $100 gas cards were Hannah Jones, Larry Taylor, Joe Michalenko and Latishea Faison.  The proceeds of the raffle will be used to recognize and honor Kiwanis “Terrific Kids” at area elementary schools.  Pictured above are members of the Nashville Kiwanis Club prior to the drawing.

The Nashville Police Department raised money for the Special Olympics with a "cover the cruiser" event Saturday on West Washington Street in Downtown Nashville.
