January is not a great month for a lot of Americans. Ultimately, the excesses of Christmas catch up with all of us, especially those of us who "charged" our way into the hearts of others by using credit cards instead of paying cash for those gifts. It's payback time!According to USA Facts, the average American spent $1,766 on Christmas in 2024. That adds up to $600 BILLION DOLLARS! I don't know about you, but I finally finished above average in something, although I probably shouldn't be very proud of it.

Christmas festivities began early as several youth and adults came together at the North Roanoke Baptist Associational Center on Friday, Nov. 18 to unpack all the items purchased for the red boxes for the inmates at Fountain Correctional Center.  Then on Saturday, Nov. 19 the members of Girls in Action and Children in Action, leaders, and youth joined in to pack 585 red Christmas boxes.

407.Demolition of mall brings back memories
Demolition started last week on Wilson Mall, a.k.a, Parkwood Mall. After years of vacancy, dereliction and decay, the city finally started tearing down what had become an eyesore and community hazard. Most folks in the Tri-County area at least 40 years of age remember when this mall was a major shopping and gathering place. I remember when it was an "open air" mall -- now trendy again, sort of -- and a place where my mama and most every other adult I knew liked to shop.

409.Nashville Elementary strong in hoops
NASHVILLE -- The 2023 Girls Basketball Team at Nashville Elementary started its season in January. The club was made up of three fourth-grade students and 13 fifth-grade students in addition to one team manager. The head coach was Beth Brantley, a fifth-grade teacher, and the assistant coach is Gregory Perkins, the boys coach and school custodian. The team had practices every Tuesday and Thursday from January to April after school, in addition to games every Saturday during the month of March.

410.Nash County to sell houses in downtown area
After a year of owning two homes in Downtown Nashville, Nash County is moving forward with selling the homes. The county purchased the two properties, at 104 and 108 E Washington Street, for $140,000 in November 2010 with plans to expand the Nash County Senior Center.

417.Man killed, another charged with murder in Middlesex
MIDDLESEX- One man is dead and another charged with his murder after a shooting the night of April 21st in Middlesex.Marcus Jamar Toney, 33, of 3795 Brantley Road was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts made after the incident, which occurred before Nash County Sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement agencies responded at 10:59 p.m. to a reported shooting. An April 22 NCSO press released stated that Toney was found at his Brantley Road residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the groin.

I hope all you mothers had a great Mother’s Day Sunday. Love and honor your mother while she is alive. Life is never the same after you lose your mother. On Sunday at Beulah we had several visitors. Many of them came to attend church with their mothers who are members of Beulah Church of Christ. Most of those also grew up at Beulah. Ellen Bone furnished the beautiful flowers on Sunday in memory of her mother, Eunice Fisher Kearns. Thank you Ellen. Danny and Beth Enroughty attended on Sunday, along with Beth’s mother from South Carolina whose name is Wilma Bagwell. Danny is the son of Wilma and William Enroughty.

420.Longtime businessman Wilmer A. "Sonny" Brantley passes away
NASHVILLE - Many in Nash County are mourning the loss of one of their own, Wilmer A. "Sonny" Brantley of Nashville, who passed away Dec. 9 at the age of 94 after a brief illness. Brantley, who was elected to both the Nash County (2008) and North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame (2013), supported local farm youth for more than 35 years, particularly with raising funds for the Eastern Carolina Meat Animal Show and Sale.

422.JVC honors PFC Alton Joyner
PFC Alton Franklin Joyner was honored on Monday, January 18 by the Joint Veterans Committee of Nash and Edgecombe Counties. Joyner, who was from Rocky Mount, was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1952. He served as a cannoneer in the artillery in the Korean War. 424.Nashville's Boys & Girls Club thanks local supporters
Nashville's Boys and Girls Club gave thanks to its supporters at a special Thanksgiving dinner last Monday evening. Unit Director Boris Ashford said the support from the community means a lot to club members. "We do have strong support in our community," Ashford said. To show their appreciation, club members presented cards to Nashville's Police Department, Nashville's Fire Department, Rock Creek Baptist Church and Paul Lewis, a N.C. Wesleyan student who volunteers with the club.

Staff at the Nash County Senior Center are having to be creative in providing services during the COVID-19 pandemic.Since March, senior center staff have had to take over the meal delivery program, delivering meals for up to 50 residents throughout the county.Wendy Perry, Senior Services Coordinator, said the meals aren't delivered every day anymore.

Three avid supporters of Nash County 4-H were recently inducted into the North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame. Wilmer A. “Sonny” Brantley, Barbara High Tyre, and the late Peggy Enroughty were among 10 who were inducted on June 24 during 4-H Congress in Raleigh. All three are also a part of Nash County’s 4-H Hall of Fame.

432.NPD hosts Fallen Law Enforcement Memorial Tree
Nashville's Police Department is home to a special Christmas tree this holiday season. The North Carolina Fallen Law Enforcement Memorial Tree was put up on Sunday afternoon outside of Nashville's Police Department. This year, 555 names hang on the tree. The names are of those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in North Carolina.

434.Nash recognizes EMS employees
Nash County Emergency Services provides top notch services because it employs the right people, according to Emergency Services Director Brian Brantley. Emergency Services employees were recognized last Thursday night at a special employee recognition program. Brantley said recognition programs are hard to hold for emergency services employees because they are spread out over 542 miles protecting the public, working in the 9-1-1 center or doing fire inspections.

Six families throughout Nash County received a special visit from Santa and the Nash County Sheriff's Office on Christmas Eve as part of a new initiative aimed at giving back to the community during the holidays. Sheriff Keith Stone, along with numerous deputies, participated in the first ever "A Sheriff's Christmas," surprising families at their homes on Saturday with gifts and food.

On September 17, 2009, Nash Community College students, faculty and staff observed Constitution Day. Thanksgiving brought many families together last week, offering us all a time to give thanks for our many blessings in life.Ironically, the holiday weekend was also a farewell to a couple of very special people.Mr. William A.  “Billy” Joyner, Sr.  of the Coopers Community passed away at the age of 90 on Thanksgiving Day.Though Mr. Joyner was never one to stand in the spotlight, he played a large role in building the foundation of the Coopers Community.

Nash County will join 16 other North Carolina counties  this week as they begin accepting credit cards payments at the Clerk of Court Office.Payments by credit card will begin on Thursday, March 13, said Nash County Clerk of Court Rachel Joyner. “We are excited to provide this modern technology which will greatly benefit everyone needing our services in payment transactions,” Joyner said.

The Lottie Moon Christmas Post Office is now open for the holiday season at Red Oak Baptist Church. Through the post office members can "mail" Christmas cards to other members for only 25 cents each or donations. All proceeds go to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions. There is also the Lottie Moon Experience table which will change weekly telling the story of Lottie Moon, missionary to China, and it will also have activities for all ages to learn more about Lottie and her missions work in China.

467.Nash County offers $100 gift cards for student vaccinations
Nash County Health Department Director Bill Hill said COVID cases in the county are about the same as last week.He said over the past week there has been 143 new cases which brings the county to 15,714 confirmed cases. As of Tuesday, he said 9 people were hospitalized and none are in the ICU nor have been vaccinated.

To pray for God's mercy and the wisdom of the world leaders to solve this terrible tragedy. Pastor Gene played a music video presentation by Ukraine's President Zelensky and his wife singing to the people of Ukraine's people, "My Endless Love."

Sunday Pastor Gene presented a Patriot's Day Service honoring the memory of all those lost and injured on September 11, 2001. During the September 11 attacks in 2001, 2,977 people were killed, 19 hijackers committed murder-suicide, and more than 6,000 others were injured. The immediate deaths included 265 on the four planes (including the terrorists), 2,606 in the World Trade Center and in the surrounding area, and 125 at the Pentagon.

471.Our family is very thankful for your prayers and notes of support!
I keep telling myself that "after this" things will return to normal but things just keep happening. I suppose having three small boys means my life will be exciting for at least the next 18 years, if not longer! But the good news is, all the craziness has caused me to more or less shrug off the things that happen in life when used to, I let little things bother me. Now, I just snicker when something happens, well most of the time.

Nash Community College is proud to announce the establishment of the Thomas Cliett Family Culinary Scholarship. The endowed scholarship was established by Anne D. Cliett in memory of her husband, Thomas Cliett, to assist students in pursuit of an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts."We are so pleased that Mrs. Cliett has chosen to honor the memory of her husband in this way.

As a child, we rarely received toys or even clothes throughout the year. We usually got those things either on our birthday or at Christmas - especially the toys! In today's society, things have changed. Consumer analysts who track the whims of shoppers report that gift cards are being purchased this Christmas season in record numbers. It is an indication of the quality of life that we now have. We are hard to shop for because we have just about everything we need.

494.Winstead retires from Nash County EMS
Nash County Emergency Medical Services was established in 1986 with just six employees and two ambulances. One of those employees was George Winstead, who now leads the organization as the Director of Emergency Medical Services. Winstead has been a major factor in the growth of Nash County Emergency Medical Services. Today, there are 78 full-time employees, 30 part-time employees and the Nash County Emergency Medical Services has been recognized as a model EMS system.

496.NRMS report cards yield dismal results
Traditionally, many kids are reluctant to get report cards because they fear what news it will bring. However, this year, school officials had to face disheartening news when their own report cards arrived. Statewide, 5.4 percent of schools received an A rating; 24 percent, a B rating; 41.4 percent, a C rating; 23.1 percent, a D rating; and 6 percent earned a failing grade, according to information presented the Nash-Rocky Mount School Board Meeting on Monday, February 9.

497.ONE LAST RIDE
W.E. “Bobby” Joyner lived and breathed fire services. Last week, Joyner took one last ride on a Coopers Fire Truck as he was escorted to his final resting place at the Land Family Cemetery. Joyner, 80, passed away on Sunday, February 6. Members of several Nash County Fire Departments paid their respects to Joyner last Thursday morning, lining the funeral procession with fire trucks as a truck from Coopers Fire Department escorted Joyner past both the old and new fire station before proceeding to the Land Family Cemetery for his burial.
