Two Nash County residents were recently arrested and charged with insurance fraud.North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of Chad Jason Cady, 47, of Rocky Mount, and Donna Scaff Cady, of Spring Hope. Both were charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

RED OAK - The Town of Red Oak has passed a resolution to "adopt" displaced Scouts, who showed up en masse at the Town Council meeting Nov. 13 to plead their case.Red Oak Boy Scouts from Troop 16 and Cub Scouts from Pack 16 lined the walls of the Town Hall, with Cub Scout Weston Strickland leading recitation of the Scout Law and Boy Scout Tyler Pierce giving the Scout Oath.

3203.Thanks to all the folks who made the Blooming Festival a success!
I'd say this year's Blooming Festival was a hit! My kids, at least, would tell you so! Prior to the carnival starting up last Wednesday night, I was asked the question, "mommy, is the carnival here yet," at least a dozen times a day. My boys had their share of fun at the carnival on Wednesday and at the festival on Friday and Saturday. I bet many others can say the same thing.

What a great time we had on the Boomerang Express during Vacation Bible School last week!  Approximately 100 workers and children, pre-school through 5th grade, turned out at Red Oak Baptist Church for a week of Bible study, missions, crafts, recreation, and refreshments.  During the worship rally the children learned scripture and songs and gave to the VBS offering.

In 1992 I was fortunate to hear Ella McCall speak in Washington, D.C. She is a former homeless mother who worked to get a Masters in Social Work. She is also a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault. What I remember from that day is an excerpt from her play, “Voices From the Street.” She read this and I was mesmerized. I then contacted her and she sent me a copy.

Momeyer’s Board met last Monday morning in new facilities and approved the town’s FY 08-09 budget. The $72,000 budget was unanimously approved with no public comments. The budget reflects no increases to residents of the town.

Gene Rountree, of Red Oak, remembers his early days as a Tax Assessor for Edgecombe County. There were no computers and everything in the tax office was done the old fashioned way. “It was all pencil and paper,” Rountree recalled. “These days it’s all on the computer.”

Usually around this time, I'd be writing a little piece encouraging everyone to make sure they got out and cast their vote! But, this year, I don't feel as confident about the election to do too much encouraging! You should still cast your vote, definitely, but good luck with that very first one you have to vote for! This election has really had me anxious. I have not voted yet and I keep trying to make myself go.

Castalia’s July Fourth Celebration is set to move forward hoping the threat of rain will be over just in time to celebrate Independence Day.Organizers say they have carefully looked at weather forecasts with the threat of inclement weather due to a tropical storm approaching North Carolina. Several projections show the storm moving out early Friday morning in time for festivities to take place.

The Red Oak Town Council is considering a proposed annual spending plan of $1.3 million including $128,000 for salaries and $100,000 for law enforcement.The fiscal year 2023-24 budget is available for public inspection at town hall as well as the town's website and social media pages, according to Town Clerk Tracy Shearin.Shearin submitted the budget to the Town Council earlier this month at its regular meeting.

3218.Former Red Oak mayor passes away
The community of Red Oak is mourning the loss of its former mayor. Alfred Wester, who many knew simply as "Al," passed away last Thursday, October 17. Wester served as mayor of Red Oak from 1993 to 2017 but his service to the town started long before. Wester was a lifelong member of Red Oak Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

As birthday season draws to a close at my house this week, it should be an interesting time.Lowell, the baby of the family, turns six. We knew he wasn’t going to be a lolly-gagger from the minute he was born when he almost came on before Dr. V could make it to the room. Labor was so fast, and his mother so sedated, she suggested she go ahead and have another while we waited. However, Lowell had a lot to say over the next few minutes, which ended that conversation. Medicine has only come so far, you know?

NASHVILLE - Nash County's Board of Elections has a new chairman, thanks to a state appointment.John Check, Republican, was appointed June 24 by Dave Boliek, State Auditor and Republican, to replace Kelly Shore, Democrat; Shore will remain as a Board member. The appointment, along with others done at the same time for all NC counties, is currently allowed but there is an ongoing legal battle over permitting the State Auditor to maintain control of state elections board appointments.

The 13th Annual Enfield Fishing Creek Paddle drew 90 registrants, many from Nash County, who enjoyed a 2 ½ to 3 hour paddle from Whitakers to historic Bellamy's Mill on Saturday, June 1. Finally, we don't have to have air conditioning, with cooler fall weather. Of course, some people don't have air conditioning at all and they suffer. Neither do some pets. Like the homeless pets that are in the Nash County Animal Control Shelter. The only thing they have is a fan that helps stir the air, but although it helps, it cannot blow directly on them, blocked by the kennel walls.If you go in there for a little bit on a summer day, immediately you are soaked with sweat and if you stay there a while, you feel faint.

The Town of Castalia will host its annual Independence Day Celebration on Friday, July 4th. Most activities will be held at the community park. 3238.Nash gives final okay on new Nashville EMS station
Nash County Commissioners gave the go ahead for the design and bidding on the Nashville EMS Station, which will be located in Nashville's Business Center.The new 60 by 60 foot station will replace the existing Momeyer EMS Station. Derek Hawkes, Nash County Engineer and Facilities Director, said that staff had been evaluating floor plan layouts and construction costs to minimize the proposed building size while also allowing for future growth of the building.

Sixth grade students at Red Oak Middle School had the opportunity to learn first-hand about more than 20 different careers during a two-day long career development activity spearheaded by Red Oak Middle guidance counselor Vernadette Garland. Dr. Eric Cunningham, Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (NRMS) associate superintendent, shared the challenges of creating the system’s next capital improvement plan as well as this year’s capital outlay projects with the board at their retreat this month. A unique ministry in Red Oak is hosting its first ever Special Needs Children's Carnival on Saturday. Jacob's Friends will host the carnival on Saturday, September 24 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Red Oak United Methodist Church. Jacob's Friends is a ministry of Red Oak United Methodist Church that is intended to provide social interaction and activities to children and young adults with special needs as well as offer a support network for their parents and caregivers. 3249.Scholarship honors fallen deputy
A scholarship fund established to honor Deputy Jared Allison is offering money to high school seniors headed to college to major in public safety.Allison died Dec. 1, 2020, after a crash during a pursuit on U.S. 301 in Rocky Mount on Thanksgiving Day. He was 26 with a young child.To help keep his memory alive, his family established the Deputy Jared Allison Memorial Scholarship, said Maj. Eddie Moore with the Nash County Sheriff's Office.

3251.RM-Wilson Airport earns safety award
An emergency drill held at The Rocky Mount-Wilson Regional Airport last year has earned the airport the Federal Aviation Administration’s highest honor. The airport was recently recognized by the FAA with the FAA Airport Safety Mark of Distinction. Hans Hess, Airport Manager, came before Nash County’s Board of Commissioners earlier this month to announce the award and to publicly thank Nash County Emergency Services for its help in the drill, which was held in September.

Nashville's Town Council agreed to move forward with demolition of two abandoned homes in town. The homes, at 328 Sixth Street and 125 Circle Drive, are both abandoned. Town Manager Randy Lansing said it is his understanding that the owner of both homes is deceased.

3259.Debuettes kick off 2010-2011 year with tea
The Rocky Mount Debuette Club recently kicked off its 2010-2011 year with a mother-daughter tea for the freshman class at Englewood United Methodist Church. The incoming freshman class consists of 56 girls and six adult advisors.  The advisors will devote the next four years to mentoring the girls through community service projects and helping them become leaders in civic and social events.

Nash County Emergency Services has a new 911 Director. Bryant Fisher began in the role on February 1, after the retirement of Robbie Stone, who had served with Nash County for around 35 years. Fisher is going in his 20th year with Nash County. He started part-time as a telecommunicator in 1994 and a few months later, moved into a full-time position.

Anthony “Tony” Brown officially became Nash County’s newest District Court Judge on Monday afternoon after being appointed in July by Gov. Beverly Perdue. Brown was sworn in by Patricia Timmons-Goodson, Associate Justice for the North Carolina Supreme Court in front of a full house in Nash County Superior Court. Timmons-Goodson was a classmate of Brown’s at UNC-Chapel Hill.

3263.It's back to school time!
Back to school for many of us is just over two weeks away. This year, back to school is different for me, as I'm having to get ready for "real" school, also known as kindergarten. Corbin will be starting kindergarten and it's bittersweet. I'm nervous about him going to school all day and having homework and all that comes with it but I'm also excited about him going to school because, let's be honest, summer is only a fun time for teachers! I for one, am okay with the concept of year-round school!

A kiddie train, two bounce houses, photos with Santa and a vocalist are among plans for the annual Town of Red Oak Christmas Festival Monday, Dec. 18.Red Oak Town Council members signed on the dotted line to finalize most of the event details at their 6 p.m. Oct. 9 meeting, including the planned expenditure of $749 for a train for children to ride around the walking trail of WB Ennis Memorial Park and $1279 for two bounce houses, one of which has a dual slide. Both inflated structures come with required company operators.

3265.Rogers resigns from town board
Nashville Councilwoman Patricia Rogers surprised other council members last Wednesday night when she announced her resignation from the board at the end of the meeting. Rogers told council members she was resigning due to personal reasons and later said she was moving. Her resignation was effective immediately. Rogers was appointed in April 2013 to the board to fill the seat of her husband, Tommy, who passed away in January 2013. Rogers served until November 2013, when she was re-elected for another term.

The state attorney general’s office announced last month that 107 North Carolinians lost their lives in domestic violence murders in 2010, 70 of which were female and 37 of which were male. Nashville Police held a DWI checkpoint on Saturday night that resulted in 47 people being charged. Officer Phillip Spivey said the checkpoint was one of two the department tries to hold each year. “We try to do two a year,” Spivey said. “Usually we try to have one the first part of the year and one the latter part of the year.”

A Bailey man was arrested last Thursday and charged with shooting another man in the leg. The Nash County Sheriff's Office received a call around 3 p.m. on February 4 that a shooting had occurred on Old Smithfield Road in Bailey. The victim, a 29-year-old male, was shot while visiting David Preston Thompson, Jr., 42, of 11623 Old Smithfield Road, Bailey. Thompson and the victim were reportedly friends and the victim's mother lives next door to Thompson. The victim lives in Wislon.

Homes for Our Troops turned over the keys at 3377 Elmwood Road to Army Sergeant Michael Beck Saturday morning. The home has been under construction for just over a year in the Oak Level community but was finished just in time for Beck and his family to move in before Christmas. Beck said the home was the best Christmas present he could have received.

Last week, I had the opportunity to ride along with the Nash County Sheriff’s Office during a special operation called Operation Sentry. The operation was one where law enforcement from the U.S. Marshals Office and the Franklin, Nash and Warren County Sheriff’s Offices went out and verified that all registered sex offenders were in compliance.
