The spirit of Christmas was in the air during the annual Red Oak Christmas on Saturday, November 27! Children and adults enjoyed food, rides and many vendors. The Christmas parade featured floats representing local businesses, churches, schools and more. Classic cars could also be seen as well as fire trucks, rescues, and law enforcement vehicles. Santa Claus arrived in a sleigh filled with children to begin the holiday season. Pictures with Santa were also offered. The tree lighting brought conclusion to the festive evening. Thank you to all who made this a great Christmas in Red Oak!

Easter Sunday worship at Peachtree was well attended.  Pastor Whitehouse chose as his sermon topic “Do Not Reject Jesus Christ”.  It was based on Acts 4: 8-12 and I Peter 2:6.  The choir sang “What a Friend We have In Jesus”, under the direction of the pastor.  Sanctuary flowers of Easter lilies were given by Melba and Jerry Hobgood in memory of their parents.

If you read Mike Brantley's Soap Box column last week and felt like you had a dé·jà vu moment - you were absolutely correct!Thanks to my effort of juggling multiple things at the same time while laying out pages of the paper last week, his column from Dec. 7th ran again in the Dec. 14th edition. There is an old proverb in the newspaper business when something odd happens to one of the pages during layout or production, the responsible party is that of a legendary gremlin who apparently sneaks around newspaper production offices from time to time.

NASHVILLE - Nash County 4-H hosted a "Fiesta" to celebrate the accomplishments of youth and volunteers during the 2023 year. Many awards were presented during the evening, which included a buffet style Mexican dinner to tie into the "Fiesta" theme. Among the many awards presented was a new award given in memory of a long-time 4-H supporter who recently passed away. The Red Hat Outstanding 4-H'er in Memory of Mr. Sonny Brantley was presented to Page Strickland.

WILSON -- Barton College announced the selection of associate professor of English Michael K. Brantley as the College's third faculty member to hold the distinguished Elizabeth H. Jordan Endowed Chair of Southern Literature. Brantley's new appointment was effective at the beginning of the fall 2024 semester. In addition to his current teaching responsibilities in the English program, Brantley's new role includes oversight of the Barton College Homegrown Writers Series he has established to showcase the written works of Barton faculty and students.

On Tuesday February 14, 2012 I missed my wallet.  It had all my credit cards, ID and money.  I had attended a meeting at Nashville Baptist Church the night before but remembered picking it up as I left.  At approximately 10am my neighbor called me at work to say one of our sanitation workers (Calvin) was at her door with my wallet and everything was in it.

266.Middlesex man barricaded in home ends without injuries
A Middlesex man barricaded himself inside his home on Saturday night, forcing law enforcement to close down an area of Brantley Road for around three hours. The Nash County Sheriff's Office responded just before 10 p.m. on September 21 to the 3700 block of Brantley Road in reference to a barricaded individual. The suspect in the home was reportedly threatening to harm himself and shots were reportedly fired inside the home.

ROCKY MOUNT - Chester H. Brantley recently established the Chester H. and Eliza Ann Brantley Endowment for Basic Law Enforcement Training and Emergency Dispatch. The endowment will cover the cost of textbooks and uniforms for cadets who enter the academy.

281.Historic preservation meeting set for Dec. 8th
NASHVILLE - A 'town hall discussion' is set for 6 p.m., Monday Dec. 8, to allow interested residents a chance to meet with state officials about what would be involved in establishing a Historical Preservation Commission (HPC) in Nashville. Kristi Brantley, Local Historic Preservation and Certified Local Government Coordinator for the NC State Historic Preservation Office will attend the meeting, to be held at the Nashville town council chambers adjacent to the Harold Cooley Library.

284.Graphic wins NCPA awards
RALEIGH - The Nashville Graphic returned home with three awards from the 151st annual North Carolina Press Association (NCPA) convention held in Raleigh on Sept. 19. NCPA's contest continues to be one of the largest in the country with over 4,000 entries from over 125 newspapers and news organizations. This year, Colorado Press Association members judged the contest.

The Nash County ABC Board surprised General Manager and Law Enforcement Chief Mike Murray last Thursday with a plaque of appreciation. Murray received the plaque of appreciation "in recognition and appreciation for his outstanding service to the Nash County ABC Board." Board Chair Julia Congleton-Bryant presented the plaque to Murray during the board's regular monthly meeting last Thursday morning.

289.NC Insurance Commissioner visits Nash County
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey visited Nash County Friday making stops at several fire departments and private insurance companies.Causey's first stop was at Castalia's Volunteer Fire Department to congratulate the department on receiving a fire-rescue grant from the NC Department of Insurance (NCDOI) in the amount of $19,988.93. The grant will be used for protective equipment. Matching funds are required according to the application criteria.

292.Service honors Haywood Brantley
A Stanhope native who paid the ultimate sacrifice during World War II was honored Monday morning by the Joint Veterans Committee at a flag raising in Rocky Mount. The Joint Veterans Committee of Nash and Edgecombe Counties honored Lt. Haywood Edison Brantley at the Rocky Mount Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park. The Committee is comprised of the American Legion Post 58 of Rocky Mount, Post 110 of Nashville, Post 173 of Rocky Mount, Post 293 of Nashville, VFW Post 2057 of Rocky Mount, DAV Chapter 55 of Rocky Mount and The Marine Corps League, Detachment 1262 of Rocky Mount.

On Father's Day, and the first official day of summer, Peachtree folks gathered for worship. Sanctuary flowers were given in memory of Jeannie and James May by Linwood May. The choir sang the "Holy Spirit Medley." Dianne Tucker led in the recognition of fathers. She gave gift cards to several fathers who were randomly selected.For the children's sermon, Beverly Wilson presented a skit from 'The Strangest Stories in the Bible' titled "Balaam's Donkey".
