2301.Destruction of historic church prompts lawsuit
For some Nash County natives, the destruction of an old church landmark has led to heartbreak – and lawsuits. Sandy Grove Primitive Baptist Church, which was founded in 1813, was torn down in June, 2011, despite pleas by members of the community who dispute the ownership of the property and desire to continue to use the graveyard on the church grounds.

2302.No such thing as a bad family portrait
If you were in the southern end of the county last weekend, and drove past a yard teeming with people in black shirts and blue jeans, don’t be alarmed. It was not a gathering of a new cult, a simmering protest or the result of a special at the GAP. It was family portrait time.Every couple of years, the family matriarch, my mama, puts the call out for an updated portrait of the entire family.

2307.Missing my little tuxedo guy, Domino
It was around 11 years ago that I met the first guy I would fall in love with. He was wearing a tuxedo and was as skinny as a rail. Oh yeah, and he was a cat. Domino came into my life on a whim. 2312.How to trap a cat in just a few easy steps
Plots, plans and conspiracies have become so commonplace at our house, my wife and I don't even flinch anymore when the boys make plans. While there may be some occasional anxiety when the mike is passed during the children's sermon, we've come to accept anything not resulting in an ER visit is an acceptable risk. So, it didn't draw any ideas out of the ordinary when our six-year-old made his Christmas list: rope, duct tape, batteries, flashlight, string, pvc pipe, case of water and scotch tape. He got all the items on his list, which he soon referred to as "trapping supplies."

I hope everyone had a great week and enjoyed the warm weather along with a few days of more rain. This week I feel we would receive a few really cold days so please stay out of the cold as much as possible. As I read last week's Graphic, one article especially caught my attention and brought a lot of memories of my school days at Red Oak Elementary and also Red Oak High School. I graduated in 1958 and I realize I have been out of school 58 years now. Time really seems to fly as we get older. The news stated the old girls dormitory across from Red Oak Elementary School is going to be demolished.

I remember when I made my first book purchase on the Internet from a new company with an odd name for a bookstore: Amazon. It was a pretty exciting time for those of us in rural areas without nearby bookstores. There was some debate about whether the company could make it.Since then, they've branched out to a few more things than books -- I have a longstanding toilet paper subscription with them, which came in super-handy during the pandemic.

If the greatest extent of the Christian faith was to get saved so you did not go to hell, then most of the New Testament would really not be needed. If salvation is all about confession of sin, then so much of Paul's rhetoric of living differently and being transformed by the renewal of our minds is utter ramblings in the great scheme of things. After all, if being a follower of the Way is all about the fire insurance then adopting a motto such as, "if it feels good do it!" seems suddenly appropriate.

2380.Rocky Mount’s forced annexation is wrong and the timing is even worse
Annexation is never a pretty topic. The fact that North Carolina is one of only a few states that still allow forced annexation makes it even uglier. When I moved to Nash County, I specifically looked for homes outside the city limits. Nothing against living in the city, I just enjoy country life. When I chose my house far away from the city limits, I did so with the assumption that I would always remain outside the city limits so this annexation that Rocky Mount is forcing upon county residents is really disturbing to me.

2387.Don't wait for fried day at church
Churches often have "Friend Day" or "High Attendance Sunday". The names may vary, but you get the point. It's the one or two designated Sundays during the year when your church asks you to invite someone who is unchurched. The pastor will encourage us to, "Make a difference". Sadly, many of us let that challenge go through one ear and right out the other. "That's going a little too far", we say to ourselves.

2389.Intersections: God and Life
The word joy appears over and over again in the Scriptures. For instance, the Psalms are filled with references to joy. The psalmists write, "Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning" (Ps. 30:5b) and "Shout for joy to God, all the earth" (Ps. 66:1). Likewise, in the New Testament, we read that joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22), which means that it is a Christian virtue. Given this biblical emphasis, we need to understand what joy is and pursue it.

2396.Greatness and a really good pair of underwear
I'm going to warn you up front that this week's column is mostly me bragging. There is also some pretty racy content, including several mentions of underwear. However, this column is also about greatness and how to get there, so if you can handle it, I'm sure there's a point somewhere and probably some serious life lessons. Over the years, I've heard many speakers talk about greatness. I generally got the idea that when I reached greatness, I'd know it.

The recent mention of the historic Ice House in Spring Hope during a Spring Hope town council meeting leads me to believe a plan may be forthcoming to remove the tiny structure from downtown, or even worse, tear it down! The word "dilapidated state," was mentioned in the recent meeting which is what leads me to think its days may be numbered. The .16 acres of which the historic fixture sits upon was donated to the town of Spring Hope of which the town manager mentioned it would be a "great space for a downtown park."

Here we start another week and the passage of annexation reform has yet to happen. I ask you when in this session will real annexation reform pass?  We North Carolinians have suffered long enough at the hands of the unscrupulous municipalities and their cohort the North Carolina League of Municipalities. We need you, our elected representatives, to come to our rescue and stop them from ravaging the lives of more North Carolinians by passing real annexation reform immediately.
