2201.Holy and Whole: Patterns for Life Together
There's a story in the Bible about an 8 year old boy who becomes King. His name was Josiah. He was a young lad who, "did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in all the way of David his father, and he did not turn aside to the right or to the left." (2 Kings 22:2).Years later, Josiah gave instructions for there to be a remodel of the temple and upon the remodel, Hilikiah the High Priest, found the Book of the Law. They had lost it. In the temple.

2202.Nash County Animal Friends' Notebook
Sadly very few cats and kittens come to the adoption floor at the Nash Shelter. Why? Because they are deemed feral and euthanized. It is true that the older the kitten, the less it is able to become a domestic cat. One that will sit on your lap and purr. One that would be tamed. However, if you can get one that is under two-three months, they adapt super easy! So often too, the older ones may actually be former domestic cats that have been put out and had to revert to the wild stage to survive!

2203.Collection of furniture is idiosyncratic
It has come to my attention that I might have a problem accumulating things.I still have and treasure the baseball cards of my youth. An entire room of our house is lined with books, and then another bookcase holds about 200 "to reads."I still have every computer and most of the cellphones I've bought this decade, and they're all in service of some type. After all, an iPhone with no service is simply a kid-friendly music player/game device.

2204.Vintage cookie recipe didn't turn out as hoped
I think it was the third time I added flour -- some of it actually went into the bowl and not on the counter -- when I realized I'd made a terrible mistake. What was being attempted was Granny's tea cookies. These fond memories from my childhood were paper thin sugar cookies and one of the best treats ever.I'd copied the recipe from a card taped inside a kitchen cabinet door at my parents' house. The problem was that I hadn't made them without my mama's assistance in at least 20 years.

2206.COVID-19 stands to teach us a lot more now than science
Traditionally this time of year, I would be up to my neck in alligators, along with several others in this town, tying up loose ends for the Nashville Blooming Festival. Floral flags would already be flying high, lining the streets of downtown. The large banners would be across the streets. And as tradition goes, the last week of April becomes super windy testing the strength of those flags and banners!

2209.Wise Men did not see Jesus at Nativity Scene
"And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way." (Matthew 2:11-12)

2210.And then came along a learner's permit
The message arrived quietly enough. It came in a plain white envelope from the NCDOT. At first, I thought it was for my mom and took it to her house. She opened the letter over the weekend and enclosed was my daughter Holly's driving learner's permit. It had perhaps the only great photo of a person every put on a state document. She's adorable. The excitement continued unabated for Holly, and continues up to the writing of this column, and I'm sure well beyond that. For me, not so much. I immediately found the situation depressing.

A gift from a neighboring merchant brought back some sweet memories a couple of weeks ago. Renee Davis at Madelyn’s Flower Shop was sharing fresh tomatoes from her father’s garden. 2214.God often blesses us in small but meaningful ways
Before I share an experience with you, let me first say that I don't expect anything else from God in return for what I do for him. I'm just grateful for salvation and the opportunities he brings my way to serve him. I also don't believe blessings from God are handed out in relation to how much we do for him. 2217.Duke linemen teach powerline safety at NCC
What happens if the power goes out? With today's dependence on computers, an unexpected loss of power can wreak havoc on computer work, to say nothing of damage to hard drives or lost data. School lessons can be disrupted, as can work at government entities. Refrigeration suddenly becomes an issue. Healthcare operations, which run life-saving equipment and depend on electric power for equipment sterilization and for patients to signal nursing staff, are even more critical.Even with backup power systems, such as generators, any amount of time without electricity causes multiple issues.

I’m happy to report that House Bill 472 was killed in the North Carolina House Government Committee  with a vote of 21-10. Nash County’s representative Jeff Collins voted no to this bill and should be commended for supporting the public’s right to know! Had this bill passed, it would have taken the “public” out of public notices. Governments would have been allowed to post their public (legal) notices on their own websites rather than placing them in newspapers where folks can easily find them.

I understand the vote option in the House Bill H524, to be a ‘we don’t have a prayer’ vote provision. How this fits into reality with forced annexations/city invitations to join their planning, please see the example using the town of Cary as an example: The Town of Cary is a medium sized city. Medfield Estates, a community of 400 homes, would have to collect 13,000 signatures (from registered voters only*) to force a vote, and then mount a campaign to convince city residents to vote against the annexation of our neighborhood. The forms to collect petition signature would have to be obtained from the Town of Cary BY a registered voter* only. (*yes, that is what the amendment says)

But I’m hoping this year, I have found a solution to both of those problems. I was born and raised out in the country. I’ve always been surrounded by fields and farms. There’s nothing like it and there’s very few things I’d trade my country life for.

2269.Inmate housing fee is ridiculous
Dear Editor: A jail is not a quality of life feature. Nobody is going to say he (or she) moved to Nash County because it has a new jail. How foolish. People enjoy living in Nash County because of the low taxes.

2271.Around and around we go, but can't turn left!
Other than COVID-19 cases skyrocketing, and a near hit to earth by an asteroid, I'd say things are pretty normal around Nash County - other than the fact that we're facing the implementation of 7 roundabouts on Eastern Avenue and Sunset Avenue between Nashville and the interchange of I-95 on Sunset Avenue. An eighth roundabout will also be added on Old Carriage at the entrance of subdivision. Also, left turns have been removed from the intersection of Eastern, Sunset and Old Carriage, where three businesses are located including Sheetz, Hardee's and EP Mart.

2273.A few of my own funny childhood memories
Regular readers of this column know that I often write about the exploits, adventures, and embarrassing moments of our children. Someone recently suggested that it was ironic that I was using stories about my children to collect a paycheck when I had plenty of stories about my own childhood  that were at least as humiliating. Realizing that a Dairy Queen blizzard would not be near enough hush money for this person, I decided to beat ‘em to the punch. These stories aren’t nearly as funny to me, but maybe they will be somewhat amusing.

2274.How to trap a cat in just a few easy steps
Plots, plans and conspiracies have become so commonplace at our house, my wife and I don’t even flinch anymore when the boys make plans. While there may be some occasional anxiety when the mike is passed during the children’s sermon, we’ve come to accept anything not resulting in an ER visit is an acceptable risk. So, it didn’t draw any ideas out of the ordinary when our six-year-old made his Christmas list: rope, duct tape, batteries, flashlight, string, pvc pipe, case of water and scotch tape.

2275.There's a fine line between being practical and something else
Rod, a good friend at work, was making his last preparations for retirement. He came into my office with a box of books."You can have any of these you want," he said. "Or all of them." Then he paused. "But you can't have the box. I want that back. It's really nice."I'm not going to lie: after I peeked at the titles on top, I knew I was going to want all the books and getting that fine, double-walled corrugated box was just going to be a bonus. It was like the man had read my mind.

2288.Finding renewed truths in yesterday's battles
I found myself needing to take a mental break last weekend from the daily duties of running a local newspaper. Though I worked Saturday, like most weekends, I decided Sunday I wouldn't go near - or even think about work. I'm sure everyone has been there from time to time just needing to turn off the brain for a bit.If it wasn't bad enough to have Covid-19 several weeks ago, my husband came down with it last week. So we had isolated ourselves from each other all week with me double masking in the house until I could get to my "safe air" in a separate room that was shut off from the rest of the house.

2292.Luke's Word for the Week
We want to be loved. This is a critical, truthful, and evident fact among human beings. It's universal among people of all ages, nations, and races. We want to know that we know we are loved. That someone cares about us. That someone wants to see us. We want to hear, "I love you."Throughout the book of Psalms there is a phrase that is used quite often; it's actually a plea, a desperate plea for something, and that something is steadfast love. The Psalmist yearns for a steadfast love, yet this steadfast love is also the reason for being able to do many things.

2293.Our first yard sale - what a day!
The realization hit us one day when our two-year-old went missing, and we couldn’t find him anywhere. He was in our house. That is when we considered that we might have too much stuff. There were other tale-tell signs that nudged us along to thinking we might need to have a yard sale, a trip to a “Goodwill”-type organization or a trip to the county dump — or maybe all three. Kristi and I have been married a long-time, and contrary to what our kids think, were actually alive for years before that event. We have technically never thrown anything away or had a yard sale. We have donated clothes from time to time, but I’d say if you have a Hootie and the Blowfish t-shirt as well as others from the Reagan-era, it may be time to take a long look at your stuff.

Hello Fellow Followers of the Way, February greetings to you as we enter the second month of 2018! You know it's flu, crud, cold, and any other type of sick season, which means we are always careful to wash our hands and to sometimes avoid physical contact with folks around us who seem to be sniffling a lot. Simple put - we don't want to be sick, so we take extra precautions during the winter months to ensure our immunity is up and our visits to doctor's offices are down.
