101.Town of Nashville now accepts online payments
Nashville Town Manager Randy Lansing recently announced that the town is now accepting credit and debit cards for payments. Lansing made the announcement at the board's regular meeting last Tuesday night. Lansing said already, $1.37 million had been made in various payments during the month of December.

104.Winter storm hits Nash County
Winter storm Octavia has taken its toll on Nash County in the past few days, but, according to Nash County EMS Director Brian Brantley, things could have been far worse.Brantley said that more than 20 accidents were reported on the Nash County portion of  I-95 alone on Monday night between 7 and 12 p.m. However, comparatively few accidents have been reported in Nash County since then.

113.Girls donate hair to Locks of Love
Sarah Brantley and Karla Posey, both five years old have been growing their hair for more than 18 months in order to make a donation to Locks of Love. On Monday, July 14th, Brantley of Greensboro and her friend Posey of Mebane each had more than a foot of their hair cut to donate to Locks of Love. Posey decided she wanted to donate her hair after seeing some other children cutting their hair to donate and her family had two friends that lost their hair to chemotherapy. Brantley decided she wanted to donate her hair after talking about it with her mother.

Women in Action of Red Oak Baptist Church met on Thursday, May 11. They enjoyed a taco supper, missions program, and had made cards to distribute to members of the military.The Adult 1A Sunday School Class of Red Oak Baptist Church had a successful day at the Blooming Festival in Nashville last weekend. The rain held off on Saturday as business picked up and all the members of the class working the booth had a great time of fellowship, too.

117.Summer Reading Program ends Saturday
Cooley Library will wrap up its Summer Reading Program on Saturday with a finale party from 12 until 2:30. Library Director Emily Enderle said participation this year has been higher than last year, with a total of 231 people participating. Of those numbers, 121 are kids, 44 are teens and 66 are adults.

Nash County dodged a bullet on Saturday afternoon as tornadoes came from two directions but in the end, skipped over the county and left little-to-no damage. Nash County Emergency Services Director Brian Brantley said EMS and 9-1-1 staff were prepared for the worst.

126.Two tornadoes touch down in Southern Nash
Two tornadoes lingered in Southern Nash County last Wednesday but no damage was reported. Brian Brantley, Nash County Emergency Services Director, said the two tornadoes touched down, one near Sandy Cross and the other near the intersection of I-95 and Highway 97. However, Brantley added, the tornadoes touched down in areas where there were no structures, lingered for a while, and slowly dissipated.

128.Nashville feels tremors from VA earthquake
Tremors from a Virginia earthquake were felt as far away as Nashville on Tuesday afternoon. The earthquake reportedly happened around 2 p.m. just outside of Mineral, Virginia. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake was a 5.9 magnitude. Nash County Emergency Services Director Brian Brantley said he was sitting in his office when the tremors started.

129.Winter weather hits Nash
Nash County residents were treated to some snow, but mostly ice, this weekend as the first winter storm of 2017 hit the area on Friday night and all day Saturday. Brian Brantley, Nash County Emergency Services Director, said the mix of rain then sleet then snow made for terrible conditions on the roadways. But overall, Brantley said Nash County residents seemed to stay off the road and out of accidents. "The accidents were up quite a bit, but not as bad as it could have been," Brantley said. "I think people have done a good job of staying off the roads."

131.Nash reports minor damage from Hanna
Tropical Storm Hanna caused little damage in Nash County as it came through Eastern North Carolina early Saturday morning. Brian Brantley, Emergency Services Director, told Nash County Commissioners during its regular meeting on Monday, that all county departments responded well to the storm. “It was a pleasure to see all the agencies come together,” Brantley said.

132.Christmas cards delivered
Penny McLain, her daughter Zoe and grandson Hunter recently spread the Christmas spirit by honoring law enforcement heroes. They delivered hand decorated Christmas cards to the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Department. The inside of each card was personalized with pictures made from hand, fingers, and foot prints of her children and grandchildren.

Be sure to take time to read the story about Honor Cards in today’s paper on page 9-A. North Carolina Artist William Mangum has once again donated his talent for a very worthy cause. His art is featured annually on Honor Cards which are available at Christmas time throughout the state. All the proceeds from the cards go to local organizations and agencies that operate or aid homeless shelters.

135.Brantley closes studio
A longtime photography business in Nashville will close its doors at the end of the year, leaving behind a historic building in Downtown Nashville. Brantley’s Studio moved into the former Valentine Fuller Antique building on Washington Street in 2011. Prior to that, the business had been in Nashville since the late 70s.

136.Nash County Communications Dept. projects budget shortfall
The Nash County Communications Department is preparing for a shortfall in its budget, as five 911 telecommunicators have resigned over the past six months, forcing more overtime among full-time workers. Nash County Emergency Services Director Brian Brantley brought the issue before Nash County Commissioners last Monday morning at the board’s regular meeting. Brantley requested close to $54,000 in additional funding to cover the projected shortfall.

138.Local author releases Civil War biography book
What started out as simply a chapter in a book morphed into much more for local author Michael Brantley. Brantley's second book, "Galvanized: The Odyssey of a Reluctant Carolina Confederate," was released on May 1. The book is a historical, non-fiction narrative that depicts the life of Brantley's great, great grandfather Wright Stephen Batchelor through and after the Civil War.

She showed some wooden blocks that they often play with. She stacked them up, as she talked about what good things they do.

142.Spring Hope man pleads for help with water supply
NASHVILLE - A Spring Hope man is asking county help because his well, and those of five nearby neighbors, are no longer producing enough water - potentially because of aquifer use by one or more nearby subdivisions.Chris Brantley of 5382 Frazier Road, off NC 97, appeared before Nash commissioners at their Jan. 5 meeting."Tell me what I need to do," Brantley pleaded, stating that he had fears that his well pump was going to "burn up" because it was unable to keep up with demand.

144.Boddie Street home takes hit in weekend storm
A storm quickly moved through Nash County Friday evening, leaving the most significant damage in Nashville. According to Brian Brantley, Director of Emergency Services for Nash County, the storm caused a tree to fall on a home on Boddie Street in Nashville. No one was injured when the tree fell but the home was damaged. “It was pretty bad damage to the home,” Brantley said.

William Mangum has once again donated his artistic skills for The Honor Card program and several Nashville businesses will have the cards available for purchase. Mangum has created the Christmas Card for the past 25 years and all proceeds from the sale of the card go to help combat homelessness in North Carolina.

Two thousand area residents have signed greeting cards in appreciation of military personnel as part of the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. Volunteers from the Frederick E. Turnage Chapter provided signing opportunities at events in Wilson, Rocky Mount, Tarboro and Roanoke Rapids, and the public responded in great numbers.

Red Oak Baptist Church is collecting greeting card fronts through Sunday, Jan. 14 for St. Jude's Ranch for Children. Cards are repurposed and resold as a fundraiser for the organization. St. Jude's Ranch for Children has a mission of transforming lives of abused and at-risk children, young adults, and families. All cards are accepted except those with Hallmark, American Greetings, and Disney due to copyright laws.Women in Action will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. They will begin working on a sewing project that will help women in South Asia.

161.Storm causes fire, damage
A severe lightning storm made its way through Nash County on Sunday night, striking a church steeple and a few homes. Nash County EMS Director Brian Brantley said the storm brought down several trees and power lines in addition to the lightning strikes. However, Brantley said the weather service is not reporting any tornadoes in the area.

165.Nashville man honored by Joint Veterans Committee
The Joint Veterans Committee honored Charles P. Brantley at its monthly service at the Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount. Brantley was a Nashville resident who joined the United States Army in 1948 at 16 years old. While serving in Korea in the Third Infantry, Brantley disappeared and was declared dead by the Army. However, three years later, on July 29, 1953, his mother, Aggie Belle received a telegram that her son was alive and being released by the Chinese government.

As I go down the list each year and see who has been honored in the past, I recognize almost all of the names, even those that have passed on that I never even met. Each of those listed are certainly deserving of the award, as is this year’s recipient, Mr. Sonny Brantley.

169.Locks of Love
Nine-year-old Briana Brantley had 11-inches of her hair cut off on Friday afternoon to donate to Locks of Love. Brantley donated the hair in honor of her Aunt Maris Ashley, a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2001. Sheila Hinton, of Sheila’s Beauty Shop in Momeyer, cut Briana’s hair.

170.You have to get dirty to write a book in 40 short years
For as long as I can remember, I've been a reader. First, it was Curious George, Dr. Seuss, and those Sunny Books Mama bought me at White's Supermarket once a week when we bought groceries. They were 19 cents each.Soon enough, it was choices from the Bookmobile out of Braswell Library, a Godsend for those of us in rural areas who didn't get out much. Whenever I had a question, I was told to go look it up in the World Books. They were Google for a lot of folks for a large chunk of the 20th century.

174.Cedar Grove teachers receive donation for school supplies
Teachers at Cedar Grove Elementary School were able to purchase supplies for their classrooms, thanks to Walmart’s Teacher Rewards Program. Associates of Nashville’s Walmart recently selected Cedar Grove for the program. As part of the program, 10 teachers were given $100 rewards gift cards to purchase classrooms supplies from Walmart.

175.Some gifts can’t be purchased from a store
By the time you settle down to read your Graphic today, Christmas will be a new memory. A lot of folks will be back at work or rushing to the after Christmas sales. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and took time to enjoy the holiday with family and friends. There was plenty going on locally to keep everyone in the holiday spirit! We are so fortunate to have organizations that take time to plan these events for families to enjoy.

Sunday was observed as Senior Adult Day at Ephesus Church. We had a special day and we enjoyed every minute of it. The choir sang some of our favorites, and the children’s sermon reflected upon the seniors that Kay Bolt remembered when she was growing up in Ephesus Church as she presented the sermon, and it was good.

177.Christmas is a week away and I still have a lot to do
Christmas is just over a week away and I’m not ready. This year was supposed to be different. I had every intention to start early. I wanted to enjoy my first Christmas with my little boy without spending the week before running all over the place. At Thanksgiving, I felt good about things. We weren’t doing the Black Friday shopping thing. Instead, we were staying home and getting our Christmas decorations up.

The Spring Hope Class of 1952 held its 64th reunion recently at the Country Inn in Spring Hope with 11 members attending. There were 56 in the Class of 1952 and 29 are still surviving. Newspaper man, college professor, voracious reader, detective of history, wicked humorist and writer: Michael Brantley, Graphic Soapbox columnist, could also be described as a Renaissance man with many talents and areas of knowledge. His latest achievement, though, is the publication of a fifth book, a nonfiction, about an 1800s-era North Carolinian whose exploits "come off the page like an action movie," Brantley said.The book title names its subject: Captain Otway Burns: Privateer, Legislator, and Naval Hero of the War of 1812 .

187.Man sought after high speed chase
SPRING HOPE - A Greenville man is running from the law after reportedly fleeing into the woods between Spring Hope and Nashville Saturday night in the aftermath of a high-speed chase.Zachary Alexander Harvey, age 23, was spotted driving a borrowed Lexus over 100 mph while east-bound on US 64 near the 581 intersection in Spring Hope at around 9 p.m. Saturday, according to State Trooper J. Brantley.

192.Area officials prepare for possible hurricane impact
Prepare for the worst. Hope for the best. That's what officials with Nash County Emergency Management are doing this week in response to potential threats Hurricane Matthew may bring to the area. The hurricane is anticipated to impact North Carolina Friday night into Saturday morning but how it will impact Nash County is still unclear but as the storm gets closer, Nash County Emergency Services Director Brian Brantley said it will be easier to tell the track of the storm in this area as it gets closer.

193.GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Spring Hope Chamber of Commerce recently held a golf tournament. Thirteen teams registered and 12 of those participated in the event. Five teams teed off at 9 a.m. with the Rocky Mount Motors team of Kevin Marlowe, Bryan Marlowe, Bryan Marlowe and Scott Rooks winning the 9 a.m. round with a score of 56. The 1 p.m. tee time saw seven teams take to the course and Brian Brantley, Chester Brantley, Haywood Brantley and Hobart Brantley returned to the clubhouse with a score of 57 to win the afternoon round. Andy Jones won the longest drive competition and Jerry Harris was the lone participate to win one of the par 3 prizes.

Gabbi Ams recently cut her hair to donate to Locks of Love. Ams, who will turn four in April, has been growing her hair out since she was born. With the exception of just one trim, Ams has not cut her hair. Ams is donating her 12 inches in memory of Linda Cooper Roane, who was Gabbi’s Mommy’s Moring Out Teacher at First United Methodist Church Pre School and Kindergarten and a long-time friend of the family.

Those were just some of the words used to describe Nash County Emergency Services Director Brian Brantley in the 20 letters sent to the North Carolina Emergency Management Awards Committee endorsing him for the Colonel Philip Nichlos Waters Award. Brantley received the prestigious award last month at the North Carolina Emergency Management Association State Conference.

Brother Bob Watkins welcomed everyone to Sunday School. There were 84 in attendance including one visitor. Zach Tyner read the Bible verse for Sunday. Robert Tyner presented handmade birthday cards by the youth to Pastor Bogle in honor of his birthday today. Happy Birthday, pastor. A colorful flower arrangements of red, yellow, purple and green was given in memory of Corliness and Salome Hendricks by their family.
