The clouds were clearing away as folks gathered at Peachtree for worship.  The sanctuary flowers were given by David and Lynn Griffin in memory of Jonathan Kerby Griffin.The title of Pastor Whitehouse’s sermon was, “God is at Work Making You More like Jesus- 2”.  It was based on scripture found in Galatians 5: 16-17.

Margaret Sink presented Margie Parker Brantley with three supplemental certificates for her ancestors who served in the War for Southern Independence.  They were David Lawrence Batts, who was taken prisoner, and confined to Point Lookout, Md., until he was exchanged and paroled; John Lewis Dickens Batts, who survived the war; and William Calvin Batts, who was wounded, captured, exchanged, and paroled, at Appomattox Court House, Va.

FOXFIRE VILLAGE -- Southern Nash hopes a strong final-day performance will translate into a solid overall team finish at the Class 3-A State Golf Championships at Foxfire Golf and Country Club. Following Monday’s opening round, the Firebirds were in 11th place in the 12-team event with 333 strokes. Southern Nash, however, was within 12 strokes of five teams heading into Tuesday’s finale of the 36-hole tournament.

RED OAK -- Mike Cook keeps cooking up the challenges at his homemade ninja course in Nash County.After hosting a Ultimate Backyard Warrior event over Labor Day Weekend, Cook opened his property again to ninja competitors last weekend.Once again, the event was well-received as 58 athletes showed up to test themselves against Cook's self-designed backyard layout."Everything went great,'' said Cook, who was among the competitors. "We couldn't have asked for it to go any better. We just didn't have the number of spectators we wanted.''

714.Spring Hope residents to see recycling rate increase
The town of Spring Hope will experience an increase in recycling rates within the next few months.Government Contracts Manager of Waste Industries Patrick Luce came before the board to request the increase, which commissioners approved.The Consumer Price Index, or CPI, for the town will increase by 3 percent and the cost per account will go up by 34 cents.

John Sherrod completed his final shift with Nash EMS on March 15, after 27 years of service to the county. Nash County Emergency Services held a retirement party on March 15 and presented Sherrod with a plaque of appreciation. “I’d like to thank John for 27 years of service,” said Brian Brantley, Nash County Emergency Services Director.

The Nash Health Care Auxiliary is continuing the popular tradition of the Lights of Love with hopes of 2010 being the biggest and brightest year ever. 729.O.D. Moore Scholarship Foundation
The O.D. Moore Scholarship Foundation recently swore in its new officers. The foundation was established by the Nash Central Senior High School Alumni Association in 1978 to honor the memory of longtime and legendary coach Oseola D. Moore. Since the foundation's establishment, there have been over 270 scholarships given totalling over $200,000.

Nash Arts is inviting the public for a cup of coffee with artist Mike Clark during a free artist reception Saturday, Sept. 30th, between 10 a.m. and Noon. Sept. 30th is the last day for Clark's exhibit, which opened Sept. 1. Clark's colorful acrylics most often depict scenes from nature, such a roadway between trees, trees and sky reflected in water or beach views. His gallery on display at Nash Arts incorporates brilliantly colored suns or the rare evening painting with the moon shining off the water with an adjacent pier.

734.Students shouldn't be judged on standardized test scores alone
The State Board of Education recently released its state report cards and if you are able to understand the report at all, then good for you! From what I can gather, Nash-Rocky Mount Schools didn't do so well in its latest round of scores. A few schools did see letter grade improvements, a few saw letter grade drops and the rest remained the same as the last go around. I suppose we should be concerned about the scores.

739.Former Nashville Fire Chief passes away
Former Nashville Fire Chief David Cheek “Pappy” Cauble Jr., 79, of Mebane,  passed away May 16, 2014. Cauble joined the fire service in 1962 with the Wilkinson Blvd. Fire Department in Mecklenburg County, eventually reaching the rank of Chief Officer. In 1972 he was hired by Alamance County as their first County Fire Marshal where he served until 1985.

Nash County Animal Hospital raised $457 over the holidays for the Nash County Animal Friends organization. The annual fundraiser offered people the opportunity to purchase lights for a Christmas tree that was displayed outside of the veterinarian office. The lights were purchased in memory of in honor of their four-legged friends.

754.Nash County Fire celebrates 50 years
The cost of saving lives has increased tremendously over the past 50 years. Gas was around 25 cents a gallon in 1958. Today it’s at $2.00 a gallon. Fifty years ago, a new fire truck could cost as little as $3,500. Today, fire departments can consider themselves lucky to buy a new truck for $350,000. But in 50 years, the impact of a firefighter has remained priceless. The Nash County Fire Association celebrated 50 years of service at a special banquet on Friday night. Coopers Fire Department celebrated its 50-year anniversary on Saturday.

758.GOODBYE IRENE!
A Nashville man was killed Saturday morning during Hurricane Irene after a tree fell on him while he was out feeding his horses. Captain Pat Joyner, of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, said 63-year-old Ricky Webb, of Pinetree Lane, went out around 5:30 a.m. to feed his horses. Joyner said Webb’s wife went back to sleep and when she woke up around 10:15 a.m., discovered that part of a tree had fallen on him.

761.Two great men will be dearly missed by Nashville and Nash County
There isn't enough room on this page, nor in this entire newspaper, to express the loss Nashville, and Nash County, will experience from both Mr. Wilmer A. "Sonny" Brantley and Macon Robertson passing away this week. Both of these men loved Nashville and Nash County and both were an incredible part of the growth and success which weaved together all we enjoy today here in Nashville and in Nash County.

The property at 106 S. Boddie will be yet another memory of historic Nashville with demolition beginning Wednesday morning. The building housed The Nashville Graphic in the early 1900s. The property was owned by Larry Hyde for many years until purchased by Adam Williams who is restoring 112 S. Boddie Street but will remove 106 S. Boddie due to structure issues. The property will be converted to private parking for his tenants of 112 and 108 S. Boddie Street.

While I can't tell you if the Russians are going to invade Ukraine, I can tell you that invading countries and world domination can get expensive. I believe they are trying to use me to help raise funds. I've gotten several emails trying to lure me into giving them my personal information.There have been five invoices from "McAfee," three from "Hulu" and two from "Geek Squad." All three of my "accounts" are being charged for the same amount. What a coincidence!

The Vacation Bible School workers were commissioned on Sunday morning during the worship service. Bible School started Sunday night with good attendance and everyone was excited. Peachtree Baptist Church has joined us this year and we’re happy to have them with us. We are on Outrigger Island and living God’s unshakable truth. The theme is, “Know the truth, speak the truth and live the truth”. This will be a blessed week for all of us.

Sanctuary flowers were given by Doug and Cheryl Hayes in memory of Annie and Melvin Hayes.The offertory was a beautiful arrangement of "Great is Thy Faithfulness," whistled by David Griffin and accompanied by Jane May at the piano. The choir special was "He Touched me" under the direction of the pastor, with the solo part by Jerry Hobgood.

Nash Central High School will present "Annie the Musical" on Thursday, May 19 through Saturday, May 21 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at the Imperial Centre in Rocky Mount. Set in the 1930s, Annie, played by Abbigail Bulluck, is a spunky orphan who believes her parents are still alive. She lives in an orphanage run by Miss Hannigan, played by Haley Brantley, but her life changes dramatically when she gets the opportunity to spend time at the mansion of billionaire Oliver Warbucks, played by Elijah Whitley.

The winter weather was the news this past week.  All kinds of records were broken as the temperatures plunged down to the single digits and roads were icy. Travel was hazardous and schools were closed.  Most people stayed at home. Thankfully there were few power outages in this area.  On Tuesday the plans for the Winter Celebration Revival at Peachtree Church were canceled.  This will be rescheduled for sometime in April.

793.Garden club holds annual event
The Rocky Mount Garden Club met on May 18 for its annual awards luncheon. President Dolores O'Keeffe welcomed the members who attended and thanked the hostesses of the event, Peggy Daughtridge, Connie Dupree, Patsy Pridgen, Pris Sykes, and Sarah Williams. The club's annual budget was presented and approved. In other business, the club was informed that a $500 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student at Nash Community College for the 2022-2023 academic year. A candle was lit in memory of deceased member Alice Walter.

On this 234th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Peachtree paid tribute to those who risked their lives to bring freedom to the nation.  This freedom was the right of each individual to worship God in their own way.  A moment of silence was observed in memory of Robert Edwards and Eric Vick who gave their lives to preserve this freedom.  The morning message was delivered by Rev. Alfred Whitehouse.

797.Services continue despite loss of Sandy Grove Church building
A lawsuit continues to linger over the property where Sandy Grove Primitive Baptist Church once stood. But the loss of the actual church building two years ago hasn’t stopped community members from meeting on the church property. A handful of community members met on the grounds March 31 for a special Easter service. This is the third year Easter services have been held on the church grounds.
