3501.Nash farmer gets probation for tax evasion
A local farmer who pled guilty in January to tax evasion was sentenced to probation last week.  Carson Baker Barnes, 77, faced up to 10 years in prison for structuring transactions to evade reporting requirements, and aiding and abetting. Barnes is part owner and founder of Barnes Farming Corporation in Spring Hope.

3502.Boddie St. lease is slated for August 1
The Town of Nashville will soon begin leasing a building on Boddie Street to house its recreation department.The town officially approved a lease agreement with Adam Williams on July 7 to lease a 3,420 square foot building at 108 S Boddie Street for $1,200 a month plus utilities.

A locally owned furniture store is moving into the former Nashville Furniture Company location on Washington Street in Downtown Nashville. Tripp Furniture recently announced that it plans to move its Rocky Mount store to Nashville. J.B. Tripp, who owns the store, said he hopes to open in Nashville on September 16.

BAILEY - A 37-year old Bailey man is charged with killing his father after an incident at the family home May 23, three days after his mother was put to rest.Brandon Charles Earp of Liles Road is charged with felony first degree murder concerning the death of 63-year-old Charles Dewey Earp.According to a May 24 press release from the Nash County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to 9454 Liles Road in Bailey on May 23rd to do a welfare check on the elder Earp.

3514.Revaluation notices go out Friday
Nash County property owners can expect to receive revaluation notices soon, as notices are scheduled to go in the mail on Friday. During the Board of Commissioner’s regular meeting on Monday, January 5, Tax Administrator Gene Rountree said most property values will see an increase of around 22 percent. “Not everybody’s going to see a 22 percent increase,” Rountree said. “There’s going to be some that are way up and some that are way down.There’s a big gamut of increases that go along with this.”

3517.School Board supports bond
The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education offered their support last Monday for the Connect NC Bond Act, by approving a resolution of support. The resolution was approved 10-1 after some discussion by the board. Board member Evelyn Bulluck cast the dissenting vote. Bulluck said she wanted additional information on the bond and its affect on the Nash-Rocky Mount School System. "I would hate to vote on something when we aren't sure of the moving parts yet," Bulluck said.

3519.Alum is keynote speaker at NC Wesleyan College graduation
North Carolina Wesleyan College will hold its Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 4 on the front lawn of campus. This will be the second time in 20 years that graduation has been held outside at the College due to growing class sizes. 3520.New town hall almost complete
Construction crews are putting the finishing touches on Nashville’s Town Hall and the facility should be complete by the September 24 deadline. Town Manager Preston Mitchell said last week that landscaping work was underway and that the big things had already been completed. “I think they are in the short rows,” Mitchell said. “We feel very confident talking with the architect and contractor that they will be done by the September 24 deadline,” he added.

3522.Early voting ends Saturday
Early voting for the Congressional Primary Election will end on Saturday, June 4. The election is set for Tuesday, June 7. The special election is being held due to court rulings that forced congressional district maps to be redrawn. That led the congressional primaries to be delayed. Nash County Board of Elections Director John Kearney said Nash County was in two congressional districts but with the redrawing of the lines, is now only in District Two, which is currently held by Renee Ellmers.

3531.Locals walk for "Healthy Hips"
Jennifer and David Thorne were overwhelmed on Saturday with the turnout of the first annual Healthy Hips Fun Run/Walk. Over 100 people showed up for the run and over $3,000 was raised for the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.The Thorne's daughter, Charlotte was diagnosed with Developmental Hip Dysplasia this year and just recently had surgery. Jennifer said surgery went well and Charlotte seems to be recovering well.

What did you do last weekend?  Boy Scouts and leaders from Troop 37 participated at the East Carolina Council Regional Scout Jamboree in Kinston.   The jamboree or “Jambo” is a large gathering of scouts who get together to have fun, visit and celebrate scouting.  The jamboree attracted close to 5000 people to Lenoir County.

3540.I'm not ready for another historical moment!
I grew up listening to stories about Hurricane Hazel and how it pretty much wiped out waterfront structures on North Carolina's coast in 1954 - and how the storm turned inland with high sustaining winds causing substantial damage in Nash County. The one story that always stands out in my mind is of my grandfather standing outdoors holding the reins to his mules through Hurricane Hazel to keep them safe.

3553.Flu shots still available at Nash County Health Departments
Wednesday, October 17th, Nash County Health Department provided approximately 786 flu shots in four hours. “We are very proud of the community’s participation in this year’s flu vaccination campaign”, said Jerome Garner, Health Education Specialist with the health department. “In years past, we’ve had a shortage of flu vaccine, which required us to limit the supply only to high-risk individuals. This year we’ve received a sufficient supply to meet the needs of all individuals,” said Garner.

3555.Two take pleas in Smith murder trial
Two of four defendants charged with the murder of Derek Thomas Smith accepted plea agreements Monday before the trial of Nezar Anthony Yarborough began. The four were charged with counts involving an alleged burglary and home invasion that ended in murder on April 17, 2006 at the home of Canan Williams in Sharpsburg. The four charged were Robert Leon Lewis, Jerry Lee O’Neal, Kimberly Conner Smith, and Yarborough, who, witnesses say, fired the shot that killed Smith.

3556.Spring Hope board to serve dual roles
The Spring Hope Board of Commissioners will now serve dual roles for the town after approving a zoning text amendment. The commissioners passed a zoning text amendment regarding the Board of Adjustment at the Monday night meeting. They will immediately serve as members on both the Board of Commissioners and Board of Adjustment, replacing its current members.

The UNC Health Nash Board of Commissioners welcomed new member Gwen Wilkins at its October board meeting. Wilkins will fill a newly added board seat formed with the new lease agreement between the hospital and Nash County, which specifies two of the 15 hospital board seats may be filled by Nash County commissioners. The lease agreement was signed by both parties in June. "We are excited to welcome Gwen Wilkins to the Board of Commissioners," said Dr. L. Lee Isley, president and CEO of UNC Health Nash.

Tucker W. Bailey was born and raised in Louisburg and is a graduate of International Bible College in Long Island, N.Y. He is presently pursuing a master’s degree from Crown College of Powell, Tenn. Pastor Tucker and wife, Elizabeth have been married almost a year and a half.

3564.NPD hosts shopping days for local kids
The Nashville community once again overwhelmed Nashville's Police Department with its support for the annual Cops and Kids Christmas event. Thanks to numerous donations from area businesses and individuals, 24 children were treated to some Christmas shopping. In addition, 40 bags of toys and clothes were made up for those who could not go shopping. "We had over $7,000 in donations," said Nashville Police Chief Tom Bashore. "We took 24 kids shopping over two days at Wal-mart."

Students at Nash Central High School received a real-life view into how distracted driving can alter a life. Nash County Emergency Services, along with other local and State Emergency Services Responders, offered the Vehicle Injury Prevention for a Very Important Person (VIP for a VIP) program to the school last month. The program consisted of two sessions, with a morning session featuring guest speakers and video presentations.

Nash County experienced a little bit of Hollywood this summer with the filming of a movie in Spring Hope and may soon see a Vegas-style casino.Republicans in the General Assembly have been talking up legislation that could mean four casinos in eastern North Carolina, including Nash County.But local officials aren't keen on a casino opening here. Nash County Board Chairman Robbie Davis said he's not thrilled with the idea of a casino opening in Nash County.

Michael Coleman, of Nashville, has announced his intention to file for the vacant Nashville Town Council seat.The seat was previously held by Patricia Rogers, who resigned in June due to moving out of town. Council members recently decided to hold off on appointing someone to fill the seat, but instead wait until the November elections.Coleman says he decided to run for the vacant seat for many reasons. In a submitted statement and bio, he says he has "a strong desire to serve his community at the highest capacity which includes sound policy making and innovative leadership."

ROCKY MOUNT -- North Carolina Wesleyan College’s youthful women’s basketball team again fell just short in an upset bid on Monday night, dropping a 73-67 decision to Ferrum College to open the 2011 portion of their schedule. 3585.Area officials prepare for possible hurricane impact
Prepare for the worst. Hope for the best. That's what officials with Nash County Emergency Management are doing this week in response to potential threats Hurricane Matthew may bring to the area. The hurricane is anticipated to impact North Carolina Friday night into Saturday morning but how it will impact Nash County is still unclear but as the storm gets closer, Nash County Emergency Services Director Brian Brantley said it will be easier to tell the track of the storm in this area as it gets closer.

3586.Nashville lowers tax rate 12 cents
Nashville’s Town Council held its final workshop on the proposed 2009-2010 budget last week, a budget that includes an increase in water and sewer rates but a significant decrease in property tax rates. The $9 million budget is $2 million more than what was adopted in the 2008-2009 budget. However, two temporary funds are included and make up $1.76 million of the proposed budget. Those funds include the Downtown Revitalization Fund and the Capital Project Fund for the new Town Hall. Without the temporary funds, the 2009-2010 budget reflects an increase of around $280,000.

3587.Heroes give Nashville Elementary a face lift
The grounds of Nashville Elementary School got a face lift last Tuesday, as Lowe's employees spent the entire day at the school doing multiple projects. The projects were a part of Lowe's Heroes, a program that encourages employees to team together, adopt a volunteer project with a local non-profit or public school and make a difference. Employees spent the day doing various landscaping projects, beautifying walkways and painting, said Rocky Mount Lowe's Manager Eliot Smith.

The Nash County Sheriff's Office will host a community forum on Saturday to address recent events involving law enforcement officers around the country. The forum is set for Saturday, July 23 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Nash Community College in Brown Auditorium. In recent weeks, law enforcement officers have been put under scrutiny over the deaths of two African American men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, who were killed by officers.

Citing his reasons as relating to changed congressional district maps, Rocky Mount Mayor Sandy Roberson has suspended his campaign to run for NC's 1st Congressional District.Roberson announced Dec. 11 that "the newly drawn maps have changed the landscape of this race, and this is no longer the district I signed up to run in."
