NASHVILLE - Five weeks into the Nash-Halifax Swim League regular season, no team seems to be capable of matching Nash Rec's talent and overall depth.
Nash Rec, the defending N-HSL champion, remained undefeated at 5-0 last Thursday with a 538-134 home decision against backyard rival Birchwood at the NRST Pool.

Officials celebrate new high school
Officials celebrate new high school

The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education and officials with Nash Community College celebrated CITI High School on Monday afternoon with a ribbon cutting.
The new school is considered a Cooperative Innovative High School program and is a partnership between the school system and Nash Community College.
The new school, which stands Center for Industry, Technology and Innovation, would enable students to graduate with an AAS degree, diploma or multiple certificates to prepare them for work.

Nashville's Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual membership meeting Tuesday night honoring the 2018 Business of the Year and the Beyond the Call of Duty Award recipient.
Jamey Baines, Town of Nashville Public Works Director, was presented the Beyond the Call of Duty Award while Farm Bureau of Nashville was noted as Business of the Year.

Nash detention officer faces charges

A detention officer with the Nash County Sheriff's Office has been charged with providing cell phones to inmates.
Quintin Cardell Higgs, 26, of Rocky Mount, was arrested on Tuesday, July 17 and charged with eight felony counts of giving or selling a phone or electronic device to an inmate at the Nash County Detention Center.

Local man earns notable military award

Rick Thomason was named the Marine of the Year by the Cpl. Suzi Sannes Detachment 1262 in November 2016. He was also named the Department of North Carolina's Marine of the Year in 2016. Last month, he received another top honor, as Thomason received the Marine Corps League Mideast Division Marine of the Year Award for 2018.

NPD seeks vandalism suspects

Nashville Police suspect youth are the culprits for two vandalisms that occurred at Nashville Elementary School last week.
Sergeant Steve Glover said the school was broken into on two different occasions last week, on Monday, July 9 and Wednesday July 11. Both times, Glover said windows were busted out so someone could climb through and open the door. A rock was then placed in the door to keep it open.

School Board to seek community input

The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education plans to move forward with setting up town hall meetings for the community to hear presentations and ask questions on the proposal of building a new elementary school in the northern part of the county.
The Board of Education, along with the Nash County Board of Commissioners, are looking at consolidating Cedar Grove Elementary School, Swift Creek Elementary School and Red Oak Elementary School into one, newly built school.

Three file for school board seats

Filing for the Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education is moving at a slow pace, with only three filing so far for the five available seats.
Of those who have filed, two have filed for the District 9 seat. Incumbent LaShawnda Washington has filed to run and will face challenger Robert Cordell.
In addition, Edmond Keen Grazely has filed for the District 6 Board of Education seat. The District 6 seat is currently held by Wayne Doll.
