Castalia board appoints new planning board member

Castalia's regular meeting of the town board only last twenty minutes last week.
At the meeting, the board voted to add Mildred Costen as a member of the planning board.
A Plus Disposal, the town's current trash collection and disposal company, will replace all the trash and recycling bins belonging to their Castalia customers.

Rocky Mount Police investigates homicide

The Rocky Mount Police Department is investigating a July 7 homicide on Cokey Road.
Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of Cokey Road. Responding officers located a single victim in the parking lot of 1108 Cokey Road. The victim, Daniel Steven Pierce, 22, of Rocky Mount, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nichole Philips Denny holds the first cotton bloom, along with her two-month-old son Benjamin Stewart Denny. Pictured with Nichole is her parents Carolyn and Stewart Phillips. The cotton bloom was found on Benjamin's great uncle Burt Philip's farm in the Battleboro community. They brought the bloom to the newspaper office on June 27.

Constitution doesn't mean separation of church and state

"Then I said to them: 'You see the trouble we are in...Come, let us rebuild..., and we will no longer be in disgrace'." (Nehemiah 2:17)
One of the newspapers in which my column appears featured a letter to the editor recently in which the writer quipped, "Separation of church and state is guaranteed in the Constitution...Even the Bible supports the separation of church and state when it says, 'Give unto Caesar what it Caesar's, and give unto God what is God's.'"

Summertime in the Bible Belt undoubtedly means one thing: Vacation Bible School. As a child growing up in the 80s, VBS was synonymous with butter ring cookies and cherry Kool-Aid. I can vaguely remember wearing fancy sundresses and vying for one of three coveted spots to march in either the Bible, the Christian Flag, or the American Flag to hold during opening nightly ceremonies.

The Momeyer Ruritan Club recently awarded scholarships to Tristen Edwards and Connor Vick at their meeting on Monday, June 17. Stuart Parker, President of the Momeyer Ruritan Club's Scholarship Committee presented the scholarships. Vick was unable to attend the meeting due to orientation at East Carolina University so his father, Art Vick, accepted on his behalf. Pictured above (L-R) is Art Vick, Tristen Edwards and Stuart Parker. Edwards plans to attend NC Wesleyan while Vick will attend East Carolina.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Cana Shrock has built an impressive resume' during her softball career at Nash Central High School -- but she showcased her game at a statewide level during last month's Powerade North Carolina State Games.
Shrock, who is entering her senior campaign at Nash Central, was part of the Region 1 Team that won the championship at the annual event, which was staged in Charlotte.
