A RETURN TO FORM

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- The wait proved to be worth it last Tuesday for the Nash Rec Sharks.
Nash Rec's scheduled swim meet at Roanoke Valley was supposed to be held three weeks ago, but was called off due to poor weather.
Throw in a bye week, and Nash Rec had not been in action since June 13 -- the Sharks' regular season opener in the Nash-Halifax Swim League.

Nashville's new police chief is now official.
Mayor Donald Street swore in Chief Anthony Puckett last Tuesday night prior to the start of the town council's regular meeting.
Puckett has been serving with the town since June 18 but was unable to be officially sworn in because the town was waiting on paperwork to come through.

Nashville incumbents file to keep seats

Nineteen people filed for various seats on local boards the first day filing opened.
Filing for Nash County Municipal Elections opened on Friday, July 5 at 12 noon.
In addition to those who filed on the first day, many others have come forward during the first few days of filing to toss their hats in the ring.

Castalia celebrates Fourth

Castalia celebrated America's birthday last Thursday by hosting its usual festivities, however, the evening fireworks were postponed due to storms.
Veterans were honored at 12 p.m. at Small Town USA during a special ceremony. Castalia Commissioner James Alston said having Small Town USA as a partner has been a great asset to the July 4th festivities.

Corbett retires from NCSO

Lieutenant Keith Corbett issued his final 10-42 to dispatchers on June 28, after over 20 years of service to the Nash County Sheriff's Office.
10-42 is the call signal for ending duty. The Nash County Sheriff's Office were able to capture an emotional Corbett on video as he prepared to issue his final call. The video was posted to social media.

"Charters of Freedom" hopeful for Nash

An educational, non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the United States is hoping Nash County will agree to placing the "Charters of Freedom" on the grounds of the Nash County Courthouse.
Nashville Mayor Donald Street, along with Town Manager Randy Lansing and local U.S. History Teacher Renny Taylor brought the idea before commissioners on Monday during the board's regular meeting.

Spring Hope swears in new police chief

The newly hired Spring Hope Police Chief has been officially sworn in.
Nathan Gant took the oath of office for the position during the town's July meeting.
He has been a part of the Spring Hope Police Department since 2015, serving as a sergeant.

Board of Elections offers voter ID seminars

The State Board of Elections will hold two educational seminars about voter photo identification requirements at the Nash County Board of Elections Office on Wednesday, July 17th. The seminars will be held in the Auditorium of the Nash County Agriculture Center, 1006 Eastern Ave, Nashville.
The first seminar will begin at 2PM and the second at 6PM. The seminars are free and open to the public.

By now, you've probably heard or read the story about the six police officers who were asked to leave a Tempe, Arizona, coffee shop.
The reason they were asked to leave is that they were being policemen, and that made one customer uncomfortable.
My first reaction upon seeing this story was that it had to be one of those Fifteen Minutes of Fame stories.

We should respect the freedom our flag represents

I try really hard to not follow much of state and national news. But, my head isn't buried in the sand so I'm not completely in the dark.
Lately, I've been hearing snippets of talk about our country and its flag and how famous people, especially athletes, are using their "platforms" to show how they disagree with certain things going on in the world.
