Nashville's water revenues plunge

Water and sewer revenues continue to take a hit in the Town of Nashville, causing the town to dip into its enterprise fund balance to cover growing needs.
At the town's budget retreat in March, Finance Director Samantha Sanchez reported that COVID-19 has had an impact on how much revenues the town is receiving for water.

Nash mourns loss of long-time Captain

The Nash County Sheriff's Office is again mourning the loss of one of their own.
Captain Carlos Ricks, a 25-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, passed away last Thursday after experiencing a medical emergency at his home. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Town applies for recovery funding

The Town of Nashville is tossing its hat in the ring for a chance at receiving funding from Congressman G.K. Butterfield's American Recovery Act funds.
Town Manager Randy Lansing told Nashville Town Council Members last Tuesday that Butterfield had secured $24 million from the American Recovery Act to award to qualifying community development projects throughout his district via the Community Project Fund.

Red Oak bank has set back

A bank planning to open up in Red Oak has hit a snag.
Red Oak's Board of Commissioners reported on Monday night that the North Carolina Banking Commission denied the bank's application.
Mayor Levell Langley said the denial was based solely on the name of the bank.

A "Music and Picnic in the Park" was held to celebrate the installation of the Little Tikes playground equipment and park benches that were added to the Free Notes Harmony Park.

Nash sees jump in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations

COVID-19 hospitalization metrics jumped over the weekend.
Nash County Health Director Bill Hill reported on Monday that hospitalizations due to COVID-19 had jumped from 22 to 32.
Hill said of the 32 in hospitals, five were in ICU and two were on ventilators.

COVID-19 VACCINE EVENT

Carolina Family Health Centers, Inc. and the Wilson County Health Department are hosting a COVID-19 vaccination event at the Wilson County Agriculture Center on Friday, April 16th from 7 am to noon. The Johnson & Johnson/Janssen one dose vaccine will be available.
This event is open to the community; however, growers and farmworkers are a priority.

Nash County lowers solar farm permit fees

Nash County Commissioners approved changes to the permit fee schedule for solar farms, making it less costly for larger solar farm projects.
Planning Director Adam Tyson told commissioners last Monday that the current electrical permit fee for commercial solar farms was $5 per solar panel and was established around nine years ago and has remained at that rate

Pedestrian killed in hit and run on N. Wesleyan Blvd.

Rocky Mount Police are investigating a hit and run that occurred on Sunday morning on North Wesleyan Boulevard.
Police responded around 10:20 a.m. on April 11 to a call of an unidentified male lying in the ditch in the 1500 block of N Wesleyan Boulevard. Emergency Medical Services pronounced the subject dead at the scene.

Whitakers man sentenced 78 months for robberies

A Whitakers man was setnenced to 78 months in prison for robbing a bank and Family Dollar store.
According to court documents, Christopher Bryan Shingleton, 43, pled guilty to robbing the First Bank located in Morehead City on June 6, 2019 and robbing the Family Dollar located in Havelock on June 15, 2019. During both robberies, Shingleton threatened employees by saying he had a gun and demanded money.

We had frost and just a few days later, we hit the 80s on the thermometer.
That means it is spring in North Carolina.
Spring means lots of good things: strawberries will be ready soon, crops are going in the field, the school year's days are numbered, vacations are on the horizon and baseball is back.

Apparently my recent conversations and emails to Greensboro regarding Rocky Mount's postal delivery issues helped some as many of you have reported a timely delivery last week. However I know many of you are still experiencing issues.

NCC broadcasting student wins award

When Nash Community College Broadcasting and Production Technologies student Isaac Anderson entered the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts competition in the two-year colleges category he knew the competition would be fierce.
"I was actually very nervous," said Anderson. "There are some great schools in that category. I didn't know we would actually win."

The Nash County Animal Control Officers help us save the Nash Pets! Without the corporation of our officers, NCAF would not exist. Initially we were only allowed to come in during public hours to photograph. Now we are allowed to have an hour of the Shelter staff's time in the mornings, as long as there are no meetings (or virus quarantines), for the opportunity to take the pets out for those great shots!

Several years ago, I succumbed to the reality that I could not control my weight without some help. I had ballooned to 320 pounds and felt as if I had no hope. I entered a weight loss surgery program and had a lap band installed around my stomach. Everything was fine for about 3 months.
