NASHVILLE, NC -- Mary Johnson Whitley Elliott, 94, passed away at home April 28, 2021. She was born February 22, 1927 to the late Charlie Andrew and Hilda Hollingsworth Johnson. She was a 1945 graduate of Benvenue High School. She was a charter member of Sunset Avenue Baptist Church formally Johnson's Tabernacle. She loved the Lord and enjoyed having women's prayer and bible study groups at home. She retired from Abbott Laboratory.

Local woman receives state award

An avid volunteer with H.D. Cooley Library was awarded the North Carolina Governor's Volunteer Service Award.
Dr. Marilyn Malloy Jackson was the recipient of the 2020 Governor's Volunteer Service Award for Nash and Edgecombe Counties.
The Governor's Volunteer Service Award honors the spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals, groups and businesses that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service.

Septic tanks failing in two subdivisions

The Town of Nashville is hoping to receive a CDBG grant to help extend sanitary sewer to two subdivisions in town that still have septic systems.
Town Manager Randy Lansing told council members last Tuesday that there are 42 homes in the Regency Estates and Essex Road Subdivision with septic systems. Lansing said some of those systems are failing and residents have approached the town for help.

Castalia girl hopes to start bird sanctuary

Phoebe Atkins wants others to have an opportunity to appreciate what nature has to offer.
Atkins, of Castalia, is working to create a bird watching area/bird sanctuary at the Castalia Community Park.
Atkins said the sanctuary will be what she hopes is the start of a motion to spread wildlife preservation education to others in the community.

School Board eyes first budget draft

The Nash County Public School System plans to make its budget request Thursday evening to Nash County Commissioners.
Joyce Jarrett, Chief Financial Officer for Nash County Public Schools, provided the Board of Education with a glimpse of the draft budget on Tuesday night.
Jarrett said the total projected revenue for the upcoming fiscal year was $190,756,557. That includes close to $23.6 million in local funding.

Cook Out purchases Nashville property

Nashville may be getting a Cook Out.
The company recently closed on a lot in Nash Crossing, where Zaxby's, Sheetz and Burger King are located.
Zaxby's was the first to locate in Nash Crossing, opening in Fall of 2016. Sheetz followed suit, opening in the Spring of 2017. Burger King opened in 2018.

Nashville church hosts vaccine clinic

A Nashville church is playing a role in encouraging the community to get the COVID vaccine.
St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church recently hosted a COVID vaccination clinic in partnership with Thorne Drug, of Tarboro.
Vernon Cheek, who serves as pastor of the church, said he feels its the church's role to encourage people, not only spiritually but in all aspects of life.

Nashville native selected as Regional Teacher of the Year

Nine teachers from across North Carolina, including Nash County native Jennifer Batchelor Attkisson, were selected as the state's Regional Teachers of the Year for their dedication, innovation and ability to inspire students to achieve.
As one of the regional honorees, Attkisson recently competed for the title of 2021 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year.

I'm looking forward to the "old" normal!

I think it's pretty safe to say we're all looking forward to our lives becoming what we once knew as normal.
I'm willing to bet however - if we're completely honest with ourselves - there may be a few things we have realized we don't want to return to the way they were!
The first thing I'm looking forward to is ditching the mask! I don't know anyone who enjoyed wearing a mask.

County signs finance agreement for new school

Nash County Commissioners approved the installment financing agreement for the new Red Oak Elementary School earlier this month and the deal was sealed last week with final signatures.
The action paves the way for construction to begin on the new elementary school, which will consolidate Red Oak Elementary, Swift Creek Elementary and Cedar Grove into one new, larger elementary school.

Two charged with catalytic converter theft

A suspicous vehicle call led the Nash County Sheriff's Office to arrest two people responsible for numerous catalytic converter thefts.
The sheriff's office responded to a suspicious vehicle call last Thursday in the Sandy Cross area. After making contact with two individuals, Brittany Michelle Pierce, 30, and Christopher Ryann Tyndall, 28, Tyndall fled on foot and was captured a short time later.

A correction officer at Nash Correctional Institutition was recently charged with bringing contraband into the prison.
Chaka Kwesi Johnson, 36, of Wilson, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance in a prison on Friday, April 23 after the Nash County Sheriff's Office responded to Nash Correctional Institution.

Proposed subdivision would have 20,000 sq. ft. lots if approved

A conditional use request for a proposed subdivision is expected to bring neighboring residents to the Nash County Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday in opposition.
The request is to rezone and 82-acre tract of land on the west side of Red Oak and NC Highway 43 from A-1 (Agricultural) to RA-20-CU (Medium-Density Residential Conditional Use) for the development of a 74-lot subdivision.

RMPD investigate human remains found near Sunset Ave.

Rocky Mount Police are investigating after human remains were discovered in a wooded area off Sunset Avenue on Tuesday.
The Rocky Mount Police Department received an anonymous call around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27 in reference to human remains in a wooded area in the 4500 block of Sunset Avenue. Police Evidence Technicians have collected and documented all forensic evidence and are continuing to investigate.
