Alston named director at Braswell Library

A former library director for H.D. Cooley Library has been named the library director for Braswell Memorial Library.
Tikela Robinson Alston became the director of library services at Braswell Memorial Library on May 15.
Alston replaces Catherine Roche, who is retiring in June after serving as the director since 2014.
"It is a great honor for me to take stewardship of Braswell Memorial Library," Alston said. "I take this responsibility seriously and have many plans to enhance library services."

Guns, drugs seized in raid

Citizen complaints led to the arrest of a couple accused of having drugs and guns at their home in Gold Rock.
Ervin Ray Hendricks, 40, and Tanisha Battle, 44, face charges of trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to sell or deliver heroin, marijuana possession and maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance. Authorities also charged Hendricks with possession of a controlled substance on jail premises. He's accused of having 16 grams of cocaine hidden on him when being booked into jail.

Summer swim schedule is finalized

NASH COUNTY -- Defending champion Westridge will begin its title defense on June 15 when the Nash-Halifax Swim League kicks off its 2023 summer campaign.
The Wahoos will open on that date with a road matchup against Nash Rec at the NRST Pool in Nashville.
Once again, three teams will compete in the league -- Westridge, Nash Rec and Roanoke Valley.

Wesleyan wraps up baseball slate

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan University baseball program fell in back-to-back games in the Rocky Mount Regional to Lynchburg and Lebanon Valley last weekend at home in NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament action.
The Bishops' offense shined in the doubleheader, scoring 21 runs and hitting five home runs to cap off the regional.

WILSON -- A coaching career already filled with lofty accolades will receive another one in July -- and it will be one of the most pertinent yet for Wilson Fike soccer skipper Chris Mizelle.
Mizelle, a Nash County native who prepped at Northern Nash, has been selected to coach the girls roster at the annual North Carolina Coaches Association's East-West All-Star Game. The event will be staged July 18 as part of a girls-boys doubleheader in Greensboro.

ZEBULON -- Will Rudy started and pitched through five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, Jheremy Vargas went 2-for-5 with two doubles and Gregory Barrios drove in two runs while going 1-for-4, but the homestanding Carolina Mudcats lost a 3-0 fifth inning lead in a series opening 9-5 loss to Down East Wood Ducks on Tuesday night at historic Five County Stadium.

Marcus Portis recently became the next college-bound player from the Warriors as he decided to commit and play not far from home for the legendary Coach John Thompson at North Carolina Wesleyan University in nearby Rocky Mount.

Graduates

Nash Community College celebrated its Electric Line Construction Technology program graduates on Thursday, May 4, 2023, with a pole climbing rodeo, career signing event and graduation ceremony. The celebration began at 8:30 AM on NCC's utility pole training field. Electric Line Construction students competed in three key areas showcasing their learned abilities and techniques in Injured Worker Rescue, Protective Grounding and Obstacle Pole training. Competitors were judged on their safety points and time of competition. Family members, friends and other supporters joined in the celebration of graduates.

No tax hike, more spending in county budget

Nash County will likely hold the line on property taxes again for the 15th year in a row.
The 2023-24 proposed fiscal budget calls for a steady property tax rate of 67 cent per $100 of assessed property valuation.
The annual spending plan of $134.5 million calls for a 5% cost of living raise for county employees, County Manager Stacy Shatzer said in her six-page budget message she presented to the county board on Monday afternoon.

Nashville questions annexation bill

Drama over Senate Bill 169 played out over three different meetings Monday with the Nashville Town Council seeking answers, the Rocky Mount City Council standing united and an apparent schism of the Nash County Board of Commissioners over the issue.
Filed with no real public notice, SB 169 -- sub-labeled Nash County Satellite Annexation Modifications -- called for municipalities located wholly or partially in Nash County to gain approval of county commissioners before satellite annexation of any property, and the county would have final say in any rezonings.
