NPD offers third Citizen’s Police Academy
Nashville’s Police Department is preparing to host its third Citizen’s Police Academy in February and is seeking participants. The academy runs each week from February 7 through April 4. Deadline to register is February 4, but space is limited so interested persons should call as soon as possible.
All instructors are Nashville Police Officers who will teach a variety of topics including: DWI traffic enforcement, vehicle stops, arrest, search and seizure law, investigations and CSI, firearms training and more. More ...

Upcoming Gala to honor victim of domestic violence
My Sister’s House is planning to hold a fund-raising gala and auction on Saturday, February 16 at the Birchwood County Club. This year’s event has special significance as it honors the memory of Cynthia “Cymp” Joyner, who was killed in 2012.

Spring Hope cancels 2013 Pumpkin Festival
The Spring Hope Chamber of Commerce has decided to suspend the Pumpkin Festival due to a “limited number of volunteers and financial support.”
This year’s festival would have been the 42nd year the festival has been held in Spring Hope.
Sylvia Williams, a member of the Chamber who also volunteers with the festival, said manpower was the biggest issue in not holding the festival. More ...

Nash County board looks at current economic picture
“We’ve done a good job keeping the county stable,” John Gessaman, president of Carolinas Gateway Partnership (CGP), told the Nash County Commissioners at their retreat this month. The Rocky Mount area is fourth in the nation in terms of growth, he said, and Nash County is the bulk of that area. The state is also continually ranked near the top in business climate rankings and success in bringing new projects, he said. More ...

NRMS starts capital improvement plan discussion
Dr. Eric Cunningham, Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (NRMS) associate superintendent, shared the challenges of creating the system’s next capital improvement plan as well as this year’s capital outlay projects with the board at their retreat this month.
The 10-year capital improvement plan draft includes $45 million for work at elementary schools, $29.3 million at middle schools, and $14 million at high schools. More ...

Carl Wayne Smith was appointed to the position of 2nd Ceremonial Master for 2013 for Sudan Shriners by the newly elected Sudan Potentate, Ken Bennett at the annual elections and meeting on January 26, 2013.  The term, “Ceremonial Master” is a ceremonial title given to one of the six appointed officers of Sudan Temple.
