Nash County can, and should do better (relevance: 100%, date: Jul 2, 2025)
Last week's release of inspection reports at the Pet Connection Center (Nash County Animal Shelter) absolutely made my temperature rise as I read through the many issues found.
As mentioned, many times, right here in this column - local people rolled up their sleeves back in 2010 to build a non-profit, Nash County Animal Friends of NC, to lobby and help reduce euthanizations at the Nash County Animal Shelter. The group worked tirelessly to fund and lobby for affordable spay and neuter programs.

Animal shelter hit with state violations (relevance: 100%, date: Jul 2, 2025)
NASH COUNTY - Seventeen animals were adopted from the Nash County Animal Shelter, also called the Pet Connection Center, during a three-hour 'Rescue and Recruit' event Saturday, June 28, while informal on-site interviews for full and part-time jobs were conducted. The event was held after the county received a 13-page report of violations from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS), dated June 24.
Sixteen interviews were done for three positions, including animal control supervisor, animal control officer and Pet Connection Center attendant, according to a June 28 Facebook post by Nash County.

Nash Central ready to shine in a new league (relevance: 80%, date: Jun 24, 2025)
ROCKY MOUNT -- Nash Central will be hoppin' a train toward new frontiers this fall -- albeit with a relatively familiar group of fellow passengers.
Following the latest realignment by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, the Bulldogs will spend the next four years in the newly formed Quad County Conference, which will, along with NCHS, feature schools from Franklin, Johnston and Halifax Counties.
Three of those schools are no strangers to NCHS as Roanoke Rapids and Bunn have spent the last four years in the Big East Conference along with the Bulldogs -- while Louisburg is a previous Big East entrant.

WHITLEY WINNER (relevance: 80%, date: Jun 24, 2025)
ROCKY MOUNT -- Accepting the prestigious Dudley Whitley Award was a tremendous honor for Nash Central High School long-time Athletic Director Kyle Bain.
But how it came to fruition will always be just as memorable for Bain.
The Dudley Whitley is Nash County Schools' most prestigious award, given annually to only one teacher/coach in the county.
And in order to be considered, a coach must be nominated -- and that usually comes from a professional peer.

What A Year For SNHS (relevance: 80%, date: Jun 24, 2025)
STANHOPE -- The 2024-25 athletic year marked quite the successful campaign for the Southern Nash High School Firebirds, highlighted by four Big East Conference championships and two teams reaching the fourth round of the Class 3-A State Playoffs.
Three of the school's four conference titles came in the fall, with the Southern Nash Volleyball, Boys Soccer and Girls Golf squads each registering a league championship.

Nashville mulls shipping container ordinance options (relevance: 20%, date: Jul 2, 2025)
NASHVILLE - In response to a local businessman's request, Nashville planning board members are grappling with adding a new ordinance to cover the use of shipping containers within town limits. Among the decisions to be made are stipulations on short-term vs. long-term use and whether the containers would be allowed within Residential zoning districts, as well as in Industrial and Business-1 districts.
Chris Sandy with Build Right Supplies appeared at the June 24 planning board meeting with the request to amend a section of current ordinance covering temporary/short-term use of storage units, to allow shipping container use under prescribed conditions.
