I've got a little to say about a lot of things this week, so the Soapbox may seem more like a typical attention-deficit conversation. Surely, there's something here to irritate just about everyone.

5705.Highlights of last year's Darwin Award winners
Each year, the Soapbox borrows the stories from the folks who do the Darwin Awards. This is a bit of dark humor that has spawned books and a movie, detailing the dumb ways that people either end themselves or cause some type of serious incident through sheer stupidity or lack of common sense.

My wife spoke to our congregation on Mother's Day and encouraged the women in particular to understand that just as we take care of our physical bodies so also we should take care of our minds. The subject was something that was discussed in my classes while preparing for full-time ministry, but I honestly didn't pay attention because I was just ready to see the world come to know Jesus and I was full of zeal and passion.

5708.You’ll find no sympathy for prisoners here
Don’t look now, dear readers, but it looks like September may quickly be turning into Soapbox Rant Month. Last week’s column — which I must say brought a deluge of comments from readers — was about how on occasion we’d all love to take a crowbar to our “Technology.” Many questions were left unanswered as to why stores have replaced checkout attendants with machines, and why chain stores build so many checkouts they never intend to use.

Last week's release of inspection reports at the Pet Connection Center (Nash County Animal Shelter) absolutely made my temperature rise as I read through the many issues found. As mentioned, many times, right here in this column - local people rolled up their sleeves back in 2010 to build a non-profit, Nash County Animal Friends of NC, to lobby and help reduce euthanizations at the Nash County Animal Shelter. The group worked tirelessly to fund and lobby for affordable spay and neuter programs.

NASHVILLE - Bumpy sidewalks, lack of pedestrian-friendly green spaces with benches and planters, and too few trash cans are working against Nashville's 'walkability,' - so those are the latest ideas for improvement by the Downtown Strong Advisory Board (DSAB). Meeting March 24th, the committee, newly strengthened with the addition of four new members, set goals of doing some pricing for the physical items while directing the town manager to identify the worst sidewalk spots.

5767.Nash one of 7 vying for bogus investment
RALEIGH — Two California felony fugitives remain on the run after posing as high-rolling, multi-million-dollar investors to the Department of Commerce that had seven counties — including Nash— vying for an industrial location earlier this year. The courting — involving planned lavish hotel stays, state helicopter transports and catered meals on fine china — was intense statewide. The fake investors demands and promises lasted about three weeks, leading up to Jan. 29, for a proposed, bogus $100-million gem processing plant that the now-believed-to-be con artists said would land between 1,300 and 1,500 jobs in the chosen county.

I remember exactly where I was. I was in my car, on the way to work, trying to find something less than idiotic for my morning drive. Since this was pre-satellite radio, I wasn’t having much luck.    Then, finally, a disc jockey said, “Hold on, we just got a report that a plane was flown into the World Trade Center. Weird. Sorry about interrupting the show folks.” The idiotic talk continued.

5779.LETTER: Citizen weighs in on town purchasing property outside of town limits
Dear editor, As a lifelong resident of the area, I have watched the nucleus of Nashville or the center of downtown disappear. In my lifetime, commerce existed on both sides of Washington Street, except for the Nash County Courthouse, which was erected in 1921. I remember the public parking lot also having businesses. Downtown Nashville was truly a beautiful quaint downtown and it was all Nashville's.

The board will approve the actual 2009-10 local current expense budget in the next school year once the counties have made their decisions. Although costs for everything are going up, NRMS superintendent Rick McMahon said, this local budget request comes in significantly less than this year’s, “which is reasonable and fair.” He said after his talks with the county managers, their hope is to get to these budget figures for next year.
