NASHVILE - Jeannette Pittman, a former Nash educator and current member of the Nash County Health and Human Services Board, has been awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest award given by the governor of North Carolina. The award is given to those with proven record of exemplary service to the State of North Carolina as well as to their communities.The presentation ceremony was conducted at 3 p.m. Feb. 27 in the Nash Board of Commissioner chambers, and well-attended, with the chamber nearly full.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Freshman Shelby Godwin's walk-off RBI single gave the North Carolina Wesleyan College softball team a two-game sweep of William Peace University last Wednesday afternoon at Edge Field. The Bishops, who took the opener by a 4-1 score, overcame a 3-0 deficit in game two to steal the 4-3 win thanks in part to the heroics of Godwin, who prepped at Northern Nash High School.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics has announced that head basketball coach John Thompson has been appointed as a member of the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee. Thompson's term of service will begin Sept. 1, 2007 and continue through Sept. 1, 2011. He will replace current Division III representative Charlie Brock of Springfield College.

NASHVILLE - A small field of dark blue pinwheels planted in front of the Nash County Administration Building flicker and sparkle in the breeze, but there is no sign to mark why they're there: to bring awareness to Child Abuse Prevention Month, a national observance in April. Blue is the chosen color, selected in 1989 when a Virginian grandmother tied one to her car to honor her grandson, who died from abuse. The blue color represents bruises and injuries often inflicted on abused children.

SANFORD -- Southern Nash wrapped up its strong boys soccer season by reaching the second round of the Class 3-A State Playoffs.Southern's campaign came to a close with a 9-0 loss last Saturday at Lee County, which never looked back after delivering seven unanswered goals in the opening half of action.Despite the setback, it was a strong season for the Firebirds, which began its playoff quest last week with a 2-0 decision over Big East Conference rival Wilson Fike.

BUNN-- Amanda Wood pitched a complete game and didn’t walk a batter as Southern Nash defeated host Bunn by a 12-2 margin last Thursday in a non-conference high school softball event. Southern, now 3-1 overall, completed a two-game season sweep against the Ladycats. Mariah Gray, Wood, Morgan Foster and Danyelle Noland drove in two runs apiece for the Ladybirds, while Morgan Tyson also came through with an RBI.

NASHVILLE - As North Carolina state's fiscal year officially began July 1st, it remains to be seen how its unfinished budget will allocate state dollars - but Nash officials put a "wish list" in the hands of their state legislators over a month ago and resolved July 1 to share those goals with the NC Association of County Commissioners."It doesn't look like we'll be done by the end of June," predicted Lisa Barnes, Senator, about the budget review process at a May 30 recessed meeting with commissioners.

North Carolina Coastal Heritage Association christened Frances Mae, a 21 ft Core Sound workboat / classroom, Saturday, November 4 in Oriental, NC. Built by Harkers Island native Heber Guthrie, the vessel has a juniper, plank striped hull and was constructed by the centuries old rack-of-the-eye method. The builder develops a vision in his mind of what the boat should be when completed, and simply proceeds without any formal schematic drawings or plans.

NASHVILLE - Spring Hope's plan to expand its extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ) by 2.9 miles has been quashed by Nash County, with commissioners voting Monday to deny the town's expansion request.Kyle Pritchard, Mayor, accompanied by Jonathan Allen, Spring Hope's new town manager, presented a pre-written resolution approving the ETJ expansion to commissioners April 6th, along with a map.

NASH COUNTY -- A strong spring season helped clinch the NEW-6 Conference Wachovia Cup for Wilson Fike High School for the 2008-09 school year. The Wachovia Cup is presented annually to each conference all-points champion in Northern Carolina. Fike, on the strength of spring titles in boys and girls soccer, racked up 178.5 total points. Rocky Mount was second at 170 points, followed by Nash Central (166), Northern Nash (161.5), Southern Nash (141) and SouthWest Edgecombe.
