Another year is upon us, and that can mean only one thing: gyms everywhere will be crowded for about six weeks, and then calmer heads will prevail. It also means that it is time for the Soapbox Annual predictions. As you recall, everything predicted here last year, as in the previous 19 years, came true. Our biggest was that the world would not end. So pay attention, these are important.

5606.Our family’s first goat’s milk experience
It was early in the morning, and I had pulled a small, familiar glass out of the cabinet. I reached for a bottle that so many across the world crave, have killed over, bootlegged, made illicit money and suffered for their consumption of it. I poured a bit of the smooth, pure-looking liquid into my glass. It seemed a bit early in the day to be doing this, but I was sure I needed it. As I raised it to my lips, I paused: was I doing the right thing, or would there be short or long term consequences of this drinking? How had I gotten to this point? Was it just a temporary solution?

I also pointed out the detrimental effect forced annexation had on Phillip Morris, as well as 6 major companies, including Sara Lee, now involved in litigation due to forced annexation. I received an email response from Katharine Neal, NC Commerce Dept., answering “on their behalf”, saying: “…annexation generally remains a local issue, so it wouldn’t be appropriate to comment……” To that I would reply:

I was down with Bronchitis last week, and one night I ran out of cough drops and toilet tissue. It was late and I was already in bed with my Vicks Vapor Rub for the night, when I saw car lights in my driveway. It was no other than my 2 BFF (best friends forever), Sue Shearin and Harriet Griffin on a cough, toilet tissue and Kleenex run. Bless their hearts; they were taking care of me, even brought Kleenex's. I got up and let these two ladies in and we sat in my back kitchen den and laughed and talked....and coughed until late.

As I looked around the Beulah Community last week, I did a lot of remembering how things used to be, when us older generations were kids here. The houses were in sight of our neighbor but not as they are today. Nearly every home had farmers with small farms and they all helped each other with planting and harvesting the crops. This included the children who all worked in the summer and often having to take off a few days from school when needed.
