5401.Criminal masterminds are limited to hollywood
Criminals are often depicted by Hollywood as brilliant masterminds who would probably succeed in legitimate enterprises (okay, many of them do). However, the majority of criminals is, let’s face it, not all that bright. That’s good news for The Soapbox, as we do like to have a recurring series of columns we call Not All That Bright Criminals. Here we go:

5403.A guide to being corona'ed, part one
Old timers have been telling us for as long as I can remember that "things aren't like they used to be."I've always been very thankful for this when the topics of air conditioning and indoor plumbing come up.But, as you might possibly have heard, this coronavirus is taking things to a new level. We are having trouble dealing with it because things aren't like they used to be.

5404.Watching the world go by while sick is no fun
I was fine until I was not. The Nash County Plague, also known as The Virus, The Stomach Flu and a number of less evil sounding names set upon me late last week. It had been “going around” you know. I’m here to tell you now: if you haven’t had it, go to your local warehouse store and buy enough Lysol to coat your home, body, car and knock a giant hole in the ozone layer.

While many of you may be glued to your TV sets watching the 2018 Winter Olympics from Korea, my dad is not.He got his fill of Korea back in the early 1950s and as we've covered before, the last time he had anything to do with that place, a million Chinese were trying to kill him. It's just as well.

5406.Lowell turns three and turns up the speed
We survived another Birthday Month. I’ve been documenting here for the last couple of years the toll and taxation of the six weeks beginning in early April and running until early May. Just after my birthday in late March which usually involves spending money on something foolish, all three of our children celebrate their birthdays in rapid succession. You can decide for yourself whether faulty Spongebob Squarepants pinatas are foolish ways to spend money.

5408.A simple walk to a pier can be complex
It was the strangest looking thing I’ve seen come out of the water in a long time. The fisherman cupped it in his hands, and as the fish gasped for air, opening its mouth, you could clearly see that it had a beak. My boys stared with their mouths open, not saying a word. That, in itself, was a rarity. It wouldn’t last.

5413.Back to school shopping not about choice
It is that time of year when students everywhere, for the most part, are looking forward to school. The drudgery of the spring is out of the way, and for most part, most school kids have had a lazy summer of video games, bike riding, splashing with a water hose or swimming. But even those things have an expiration date as the fall looms straight ahead and a fresh start on another school year brings the optimism of a clean slate, new teachers, old friends and in some cases, even new schools.

There is an expression, meant to give people pause and a chance to reach back for some humility, or be humble, that you don't hear much anymore. It goes sort of like this: be slow to judge what you hear and see people do or react to because you don't know what you'd do unless you are put in the same situation. Most recently, my family and I found ourselves in something that we'd only seen on TV or in the aftermath, in B-roll video, patched together, shown as drama, looping over and over. We were at Crabtree Valley Mall on Saturday, when something happened, and there is just no other way to say it, all hell broke loose.

Before or after I started mowing, I would go to the tanning bed to even up my tan and I had the prettiest, even golden tan around. Now, after a few spots that "really" got my attention, times and things have changed.

The latest doomsday scenario for life as we know it is upon us, and it has nothing to do with Donald Trump. In the last two weeks, I've heard on both television and radio, as well as read several articles about how automation will soon put most, if not all, humans out of work. As a matter of fact, this "news" has been such a hot topic, I offered my freshmen the opportunity (they don't view it exactly the same way) to write research papers about the robot invasion.

Days later on a trip to town, she and Terry picked up a replacement wand kit. Time soon rolled around for the grass to be cut again and Donna was kind of excited to use her newly-repaired sprayer.
