4701.It's time to relearn the definition of public
When I wrote this column last week, I was under the impression citizens who serve on our town's tree board, many of whom are very meticulous when it comes to decisions, were convinced 15 trees needed removal from Washington Street in downtown Nashville due to irreparable condition. I even mentioned two members whom I know would fight tooth and nail to save a tree if they thought there was a chance of saving it. Knowing a couple of the members as I do, I still trust their judgement when it comes historic streets and trees.

Sunday, Psalm Sunday, was a beautiful spring morning as Peachtree folks gathered at the church for worship. Pastor Whitehouse and his wife, Marta, were missing. Marta's father, Frank Venegas of Daytona Beach, Florida, passed away on Thursday, following a lengthy illness. Our sympathy goes out to them. The pulpit was filled by Dr. Bill Wakefield, in Gene's absence. Dr. Wakefield is a former interim pastor at Peachtree and his, and his wife's, Delcie's presence brought back precious memories.

Who doesn’t love the mental image of sitting on a porch in a rocking chair on a quiet sunny day, with an old dog at your feet? Old dogs should be cherished. After living their lives obeying their masters through good times and bad, they have proven their loyalty. It seems that lately we have had an influx of senior dogs. It breaks our hearts to see them sit in the shelter, confused and scared, with one eye always watching the kennel door for their master to come back.

Is your happiness based on faith or feeling? Thoughts or truth? Circumstances or Christ? The battle that wages within us for authentic joy is an intense one. Some days we find we are flying high, feeling good, having good thoughts and just enjoying our circumstances. But then our feelings change, our thoughts become muddled with questions, and our circumstances begin to dictate the course of our life. We live as foreigners to the abundant life we read about in John 10:10.

Betsy Coppedge taught the Sunday school lesson in my class today. The subject was God is Awesome, from Psalm 66. There is a lot for us to think about in this passage of Scripture. Just look around and look at creation, stop and count your blessing. You will see that God is awesome. In fact, the word should be used only in reference to God and what He has done.

4780.Death, resurrection confirms Biblical truth about Heaven
"In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2)My mother in-law told me last week that she was ready and looking forward to heaven. My thoughts immdediately turned to the 2004 book titled 90 Minutes in Heaven. It has been a source of comfort to many about what the Bible says about heaven. It is the account of a fatal automobile accident that took the life of Don Piper.

4783.Life without TV: a return to the 1970s
When my parents got a small black and white television for their bedroom, I was handed down a little six-inch black and white that my dad had won as a door prize at his company's Christmas party years before. Its rabbit ears picked up Channel 5 in Raleigh, Channel 11 in Durham, Channels 7 and 9 in Greenville and Channel 4, which was UNC-TV. It was an amazing time to be alive.

Webster defines a habit as a recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition, an established disposition of the mind or character. It is the latter statement that inspired me to examine what I consider to be the seven most important habits that every Christian should possess. Mind you now, my list is not all-inclusive. I do not have the market cornered on the list of all the habits that should show up in our lives. In fact, my list is no better or more correct that your list.

This semester, I'm teaching a class on the life and work of Ernest Hemingway, one of my favorite writers. I sometimes forget how close his fiction is to his real life -- the man was injured with shrapnel, saw many awful things as both an ambulance driver, combatant and journalist. On top of all that, he got what amounted to a "Dear John" letter as well. Many of his characters suffer from what we've come to call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Wow! Have times changed. When I was younger, I couldn't get enough sun and the heat just made it better. I would work all day cutting grass around home, then I would get on the tractor and mow my little farm path and when that was all done, if there was still light, I would lower the deck on my mower and cut some more. Before or after I started mowing, I would go to the tanning bed to even up my tan and I had the prettiest, even golden tan around. Now, after a few spots that "really" got my attention, times and things have changed.
