4601.Local students named recipients of NC Teaching Fellow scholarship
Thirteen high school seniors from Nash-Rocky Mount Schools are among the 2009 recipients of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows scholarships. Each Teaching Fellow receives a $26,000 scholarship loan from the state, payable in $6,500 annual increments.  The full loan is forgiven after the Fellow has completed four (4) years of teaching in North Carolina public schools or U.S. Government schools.  In addition, all Fellows take part in unique academic and summer enrichment programs during their college careers.

4602.It’s important to read those public notices
A proposed moderate income apartment complex is on the table to be constructed on about eight acres of land off Washington Street, across from Kerr Drug. The property juts back towards an already developed single family subdivision, Davis Farms. Members of that subdivision, and some nearby areas, have voiced their concerns about  the apartment complex and, for the most part, are  opposed to the idea.

4603.Happily anticipating the next nine years
What do you give someone after nine years of marriage? Nothing! At least, I hope that’s the answer. Today is Allen and my nine-year wedding anniversary and I don’t have a present. We aren’t really doing the present thing anymore. I don’t think it’s because we don’t want to but more so because we can’t afford to.

4604.Access to affordable homeowners insurance may be at risk
There is a piece of legislation currently in the NC Senate that I believe is very critical to our ability to continue to have access to affordable homeowners insurance rates in NC. Briefly, there is a state program to provide property insurance in the coastal counties, called the NC Beach Plan. It was originally intended to be the “market of last resort” for people on the Outer Banks, but has since been expanded to include 18 “coastal counties”. To give you a point of reference, it comes as far inland as Jones County, which is two counties away from Goldsboro.

4665.Nash County desperately needs a cat TNR program
A report was shared with me this week containing 2024 data from animal shelters in our region. Nash seems to be on the high end of euthanizations again - which is disappointing. The largest number looks to be cats but with a high percentage of the dog intake as well. We are researching the report for more in-depth information before offering a full report in the paper, but I wanted to at least cast my opinion this week in what seems to be a huge, if not extreme, problem here in Nash County - feral cats.

Not too long ago, ex-college football player and current action movie actor Dwayne Johnson was known as a professional wrestler called The Rock.He had a catchphrase that became imbedded in pop culture for years: "Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?" I know what you're thinking. Pro wrestling will never be as good as it was in the 80s when I was growing up. You might also be thinking that what does that catchphrase mean, to which I would answer, I have no idea, but that is how pop culture works.

Besides the cost of our devotions ministry, we also sponsored four Southern Gospel concerts a year.

Nashville has lost several key members of its community over the last several weeks. Sometimes when so many people leave us over a short window of time, it’s really easy to get depressed over how much we’ve lost. But it’s also important to remember how much we gained from these people as they shared their life with us and this community.
