3802.Nash EMS Angels deliver CPR Manikins
Nash County Emergency Medical Services recently received a donation that has the potential to save lives. The Nash County Chapter of the North Carolina EMS Angels Motorcycle Club donated 10 CPR Manikins to Emergency Medical Services last week. The manikins will be used for training to not only train employees of Nash County Emergency Services but also others, said Scott Strufe, EMS Director for Nash County Emergency Services.

Alford L. Sweatt, Jr. was a man known for many things but his greatest legacy was his dedication to education. That legacy will live on forever in the halls of Nash Community College’s Science and Technology Building as the building was recently renamed for Sweatt.

3809.One problem is we don't have any more toy stores
I've mentioned in this spot that the much-publicized bully and violence in schools is a culture problem, not the fault of a tool or object.I believe that's true. In a time where one has to carefully watch radio stations for profanity, might have to explain all kinds of products advertised on TV before 9 p.m. (or mentioned in shows) and here all kinds of salty language at kids' sporting events, it's obvious we have a culture problem.

3810.Saying goodbye to neighborhood schools is hard
It's so sad to see three of our oldest school structures in Nash County come to an end.Red Oak Elementary students are now housed at the new facility in Red Oak and the old structure is now just a fond memory and a lot of dust.Cedar Grove recently celebrated its last year in operation. Those students will also move to the new facility in Red Oak.Swift Creek Elementary will close its doors and also move children to the new school.

3811.Baseball in September is a return to childhood
It's September, and hurricane threats aside, the weather is breaking a bit, and the greatest of all months, October, will be in sight soon.It will be safe to go outside again, the leaves will turn, the State Fair will roll in, ECU football will be in bloom, and baseball will be relevant again to people who don't even follow it.I have to admit I am a baseball refugee. I loved the game growing up, back when you could only watch games on TV on Saturday afternoon or Monday night.

Nora Louise Strickland Moss, 94, passed away November 15, 2010.  She was born September 28, 1916 in Wilson County, daughter of the late Willie Strickland and Nora King Strickland. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willie Gray Moss; sister, Margaret Smith; brothers, Sidney and Willie Strickland; and two grandchildren, Debbie Kelly and Craig Moss.  She was also predeceased by three stepchildren, Juanita Moss, George Moss and James Moss.

3815.UDC BETHEL HEROES CHAPTER
UDC Bethel Heroes Chapter 636 met on  Aug 1, 2012. Our program “Camp Douglas Civil War Prison”  was presented by Dottie Barrett, President. Frances Powell, local member of Bethel Heroes has direct ties to this prison.  Her ancestor John Parson, who served with Jackson’s Virginia Artillery, during the War Between the States was a confederate soldier who died as a prisoner and is buried in a mass grave in Oak Woods Cemetery.

3818.QUARTERLY BENEVOLENCE
InJoy Thrift Store presented over $40,000 in donations to around a dozen non-profit organizations on Monday morning. The donations were from the second quarter earnings, including April, May and June. InJoy has been giving back since it opened almost two years ago. Those receiving donations include My Sister's House and Faith Christian Ministries. Since opening, InJoy has donated nearly $88,464 to local Christian-supported ministries and another $88,465 to DOOR International. The store will celebrate its second birthday with a celebration on Saturday, August 1 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the store at 1020 Liberty Lane in Rocky Mount.

3828.Phil Ford to speak at Chamber Distinguished Citizen event
Phil Ford will return to Nash County on March 1 to serve as the guest speaker for the Nashville Chamber of Commerce's Distinguished Citizen event. Ford is a Nash County native and former UNC basketball star. He was the second pick in the NBA draft in 1978 and was named NBA Rookie of the Year with the Kansas City Kings in 1979.

3833.Nashville to make sidewalk improvements
Nashville's Town Council received an update on the town's long awaited sidewalk project at their regular meeting earlier this month. The project will provide sidewalk from First Street Extension all the way to Wal-Mart on Eastern Avenue. Another part of the project will provide sidewalk on S. Alston Street from Circle Drive to Circle Drive.The project is part of Nashville's long-range plans of making the town more pedestrian friendly.

Nash County residents were among those named to the Chancellor’s List, Dean’s List and Honor Roll for the Spring 2009 at East Carolina University. The Chancellor’s List is composed of the names of all full-time undergraduates who earn a 4.0 on all work taken with no incomplete grades.

3837.Twin Counties observe April National Child Abuse Prevention Month
April was proclaimed as National Child Abuse Prevention Month in 1983. During this month, public awareness is promoted through child welfare agencies who strive to ensure and protect the safety and welfare of children to prevent child maltreatment. In 1989, the Blue Ribbon Campaign to prevent Child Abuse began as a Virginia grandmother's tribute to her grandson who died as a result of abuse. She tied a blue ribbon to the antenna of her car as a way to remember him and to alert her community to the tragedy of child abuse. The Blue Ribbon Campaign has expanded across the country.

Friends and supporters of Shaw University are getting their ethnic attires ready and their appetites whetted for the elaborate “Parade of Culture” and delicious banquet food at the 5th annual Heritage banquet on April 4, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at the McCarter Center, 225 South Glendale Avenue in Rocky Mount. The colorful attires fill the center with scenes to cherish and remember. Many of the dresses and outfits are flown directly from Africa for this occasion. Last year’s affair, which celebrated our colleges and universities, filled the center. This year is expected to attract even more as Shaw “Honors Its Pioneer Teachers.”

3845.Annual Plant Sale is April 20
NASHVILLE - Online orders are being taken now through April 15 for the annual Nash County Arboretum Plant sale, to be held April 20 at the Nash County Agriculture Center in Nashville from 9 a.m. to noon. Nash County Extension Master Gardeners, who number 75, have been growing plants at their homes, in their gardens, in greenhouses and dividing plants from the Arboretum itself for weeks, resulting in over 1500 plants for sale. There will also be nursery plants available the day of the sale.

Last Friday night the annual Red Oak High school  reunion was held at Rocky Mount Shriner Club in Rocky Mount. This year made 96 years this event has been held. Approximately 190 former graduates (and guests) attended. This reunion is always for all graduates, not just one year. The ages of those attending are 99 years to the last year Red Oak had a high school in 1966.

The Nash Health Care Volunteer Auxiliary recently made a $5,000 donation to the Nash Health Care Foundation towards the construction of a Pediatric Emergency Department. The money was raised from the auxiliary’s annual Lights of Love ceremony.Twenty percent of the patients at Nash General Hospital’s Emergency Care Center are under the age of 17 – nearly double the amount of pediatric patients in other North Carolina emergency rooms.

RALEIGH - A backyard flock in Franklin County has tested positive for High Path Avian Influenza (HPAI). The positive sample was identified Jan. 5 by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in Raleigh. This is the first confirmed positive in Franklin County and the ninth confirmed positive in North Carolina since Oct. 1. The Town of Red Oak is working towards constructing a Veterans Memorial at W.B. 3896.Red Oak - Dortches Park is approved for state grant
The Town of Red Oak has been granted $500,000 in matching grant monies by the State of North Carolina in order to fund the new Red Oak – Dortches Park, slated to be the first of several new park projects in Nash County. The funds will come from the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund and will be matched with funds from the towns of Red Oak and Dortches. In addition, the park project was earlier awarded $250,000 in federal matching funds to aid in the park construction.

SPRING HOPE - In the wake of the first successful Semi-Annual Spring Hope Sweep, Downtown Development Board (DDB) members are looking to build on that momentum with a questionnaire to downtown merchants about what else can be done to beautify the town.Meeting Sept. 16, the Spring Hope DDB discussed results of the first "sweep," Sept. 14, which focused on downtown and Spring Hope park.
