(41) So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added. (42) They were devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (43) Reverential awe came over everyone, and many wonders and miraculous signs came about by the apostles. (44) All who believed were together and held everything in common, (45) and they began selling their property and possessions and distributing the proceeds to everyone, as anyone had need.

Ricky Tucker passed that message along during a seminar Sunday evening at Peachtree Baptist Church. Tucker, who is a member of the church and also serves as the Director of Training and Special Programs for the NC State Capital Police, provided the seminar at Peachtree but all area churches were invited to attend.

2514.Luke's Word for the Week
Two weeks ago in our time together we learned about the nature of Jesus, which according to Mark 1:21-28 is to administer healing to hurting people. We can take the liberty of being bold in saying that healing is in the nature of Jesus because his healings are numerous throughout the Gospels and here in the book of Mark, we find it's the first public miracle in Mark's gospel. Not only was it a healing, but it was a healing of a man possessed by a demon - a man was healed as Jesus cast out the demonic forces that were ruining his life.

Apparently having three small children wasn't exciting enough for me so I decided to give it a try with only one working leg. Last Wednesday afternoon, I picked my boys up from the babysitter and rushed home to get dinner started. I was trying to get a ham in the oven to cook a few hours. It was such a pretty day I thought while the ham was cooking, I'd take the boys outside to play. I wasn't even home 30 minutes before that plan changed.

It’s no secret that the United States is in an economic mess right now. Municipalities all over the world are facing revenue shortfalls and are having to be creative, in essence, to balance budgets. Right here in North Carolina, the General Assembly is looking at things to cut to make ends meet. Some of these cuts bother me. Both the House and Senate have passed policy and budget provisions which will significantly affect early childhood education programs. If there’s one place North Carolina needs to be making cuts, it’s not in early childhood education.

Currently, my house is full of cats and dogs. I have four cats that stay inside. When we moved to our new home, there was a cat outside and he wouldn’t leave so we kept him too. He stays outside and is our guard kitty. We also have two dogs, American Pit Bull Terriers. They stay inside too. I’ll be honest. 2572.Birthdays should in no way be considered bad days
Most Sundays, I sit behind a rowdy group of octogenarian ladies at church. When I ask how they're doing, I never get "My bunions are acting up" or "I think the gout is coming on."No, there's usually some sass and always some humor. This past week was no exception. (Names have been abbreviated to protect identities and my backside from catching a swift kick).

2578.A few answers to recent concerns
Several issues have recently attracted my attention from the media and citizens questions.  I’m addressing several of these today. Recently several citizens, myself included, received a solicitation in the mail offering coverage of repairs to your water lines from the street to the house.  I threw mine in the trash.

2579.A Father’s Day gift you can’t buy at a store
They used to say that Mother’s Day was the busiest holiday for the post office and for the phone company. They also used to say that Father’s Day was the day the phone company saw the most “collect” phone calls. Over the years, there have been all kinds of jokes about Father’s Day, most not suitable for print. Maybe it has to do with how TV sitcoms have portrayed Dads the last couple of years — goofy, dumb nitwits who constantly have to be “saved” by the Mom.

2580.Astronauts return after getting stranded in space
You may have seen in the news last week that a pair of astronauts that had been stranded in space are being retrieved by a private company. It's pretty amazing.I avoided reading too much about the story because of the anxiety it caused. Astronauting has to be the worst job in the world and I wonder why so many of my childhood friends wanted to be astronauts. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were supposed to go to the International Space Station for 10 days and then return.

Our news email is flooded with press releases and updates regarding the recent violent crimes in Rocky Mount. Typically we focus our coverage on Nashville and other areas of Nash County leaving the City of Rocky Mount government and happenings to the newspaper in Rocky Mount. However the recent escalation, or should I say explosion, of crime in Rocky Mount is now something that affects all of Nash County, not just the city.

2589.Belated resolutions for the New Year
I'm not going to lie: I was glad to see 2015 put in the rear view mirror. While I did have my first book published, there were some dark days last year. But now, we have a new year filled with optimism, and some really strange weather so far. If you don't get stuck in my yard on your vehicle, you've already had a good day. In this spirit, I've compiled, a bit belated, my resolutions for 2016:

Kudos to both Momeyer and Red Oak town leaders for paying close attention to state legislation which could potentially have a profound affect on small towns.Red Oak is sending its official opposition to HB 765 which could force towns to allow more development than desired, or than a town can support due to relaxing development regulations and/or removing some of that control from local governments.Momeyer is reaching out to residents in its ETJ due to a bill in both the NC Senate and House that could potentially eliminate ETJ boundaries.

2595.There are a lot of issues right here at home
As America was anxiously awaiting the 'big debate' Tuesday night between the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees, I couldn't help to be equally, if not more, concerned about what's going on right here in North Carolina, Nash County and Nashville.First - let me preface the next part of this column that I do not have anything against private schools. In fact, I believe there are cases where enrolling a child into a private school makes for the best choice for some children and family situations.

2598.Now I know why they call it Terrible Twos!
I’m not sure how much longer I will be able to handle having a two-year-old. Every day with Corbin is like a day in a zoo full of wild monkeys. Corbin climbs on everything, he throws stuff, he hits and he puts everything in his mouth. He gets at least one bruise each week. He gets in trouble every single day, multiple times a day. Getting in trouble doesn’t phase him one bit.
