1701.Nash County Animal Friends’ Notebook
Brrrrr… We have experienced a streak of unseasonably cold weather. NCAF would like to remind you that pets suffer from cold right along with humans. Their fur coats could be equated to human indoor clothing. When you go outside without outwear and feel cold, they feel cold at exactly that same rate. And they have no footwear! We’ve heard people say, “But my dog likes to stay outside!” We are fairly sure they would be much happier in a warm shelter.

You know it’s hot outside when your dogs walk out the door and immediately turn right back around and go back in the house. But who knows, maybe my two girls are just spoiled? June was a pretty hot month though so I can’t even imagine what July and August are going to look like. Looks like my dogs may be spending a big portion of their summer inside with the air conditioner blasting.

1765.2024: What the heck just happened to us?
You may have awakened after passing out from binging too many Little Debbie Christmas Tree cakes and wondered if 2024 was a fever dream.I liken it to the time I was on an out-of-state research trip and got talked into eating at an Indian restaurant where the food set my face on fire from the inside out. My nose and lips were literally floating in front of my face for about 20 minutes. For the rest of the night, I kept asking "what the heck just happened?"What I really should have written about this week was something highbrow, such as the fact that it is the 150th anniversary of the Impressionism movement.

Sometimes I wonder who the people are that let their pets die at the Shelter.   The ones who allow their dogs to roam at will because, after all, “they are in the county.”  There are some dogs that stick close to home, like my Lady who protects our house and cars...or at least she thinks she does.  The only time she leaves the back door area is when we are outside, when she can stop guarding.

1776.Nash County Animal Friends’ Notebook
Thanksgiving is a time to give THANKS.   I want to thank, in particular, my hubby for tolerating all the long hours, the money spent, plus all the dogs and some cats that show up at our home.  For example, last night he went to bed and during the night one of the fostered dogs got hurt.  By the time he got up, there was ANOTHER dog in the house!  An hour later he was rubbing on it and saying poor boy.

1777.Love the country, but the snakes have to stay outside
Living in the country has plenty of advantages but it’s not devoid of its disadvantages either. I’ve always lived in the country and appreciated its tranquility and the beauty of nature. That’s one big advantage to me. I’ve always wondered if living out in the middle of nowhere somehow molded my brain into that of a writer. Somehow though, I’ve also been molded into someone who is paranoid of nasty little creatures.

1780.Pretend I’m a bank and bail me out!
Knowing how intelligent and astute Soapbox readers are — and knowing that they know we’d NEVER blatantly pander to them — we figured we’d talk about the stock market this week. When I was a young boy, the stock market was that place in Rocky Mount where cows and other assorted livestock was sold. However, today, in the age of Scottrade, Ameritrade and any other brokerage that might not have gone out of business in the five minutes since you bought your paper, it means something else.

Just a few more days remain of 2017 which means it's time for everyone to make their New Year's resolutions. I've given up on the whole resolution deal. Dear Editor: With all the Bills in the House and Senate concerning Forced Annexation reform, one should not forget the most fundamental right citizens are fighting for – the right to vote. This right, however, is one the Democratic majority and the tax-funded League of Municipalities are determined to deny us. The tactic now being employed in Raleigh is to offer weak, meaningless Bills as tokens and to eviscerate the few good ones.
