1501.The proverbial race card belongs in the past
When opportunity knocks — or tries to tear your door down — you should answer. It might get you beers with the President at the White House. What started as a neighbor trying to do the right thing, turned into a college professor acting like a drunk college student, a policeman arresting him and the President of the United States deciding this would be a great case to comment on immediately, unlike most other newsworthy things that have happened since he took office.

1502.Give poor Charlie Brown a break!
Now that Halloween is behind us, it’s becoming more evident that the holidays are only a hop, skip and a jump away. Some folks have already put up their Christmas tree. Me, well technically, I never actually got around to putting up my Halloween/Fall decorations. They are still sitting in my house waiting for the right moment to be displayed. So it’s probably safe to say my Christmas tree won’t be going up anytime soon.

And, keeping with tradition, Nashville Elementary School brought its pre-k and kindergartners to Downtown Nashville to trick-or-treat at area businesses. Area daycares also brought youth downtown to trick-or-treat.

1505.Nash County recognizes Telecommunicators
This week, public safety agencies across the nation are recognizing the critical role played by telecommunicators. These professionals are the true first “first responders” and one of the most critical contacts citizens have with emergency services. Each year, the second full week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators. In 1992, Congress proclaimed it a national week of recognition.

1514.Honoring 9-1-1 Telecommunicators
I had the opportunity to visit the 9-1-1 call center around two weeks ago. It wasn’t my first visit there but each time I go, I am more in awe of what these men and women do. I like to think of myself as a multi-tasker. Even though I can’t rub my head and my tummy at the same time, I can write stories while gulping a big cup of coffee. I can also listen to people talk while taking notes at the same time. But if you want to know what a real multi-tasker is, you must take a trip to the 9-1-1 center in Nashville. The telecommunicators definitely qualify as multi-taskers.

1518.Pigs will be pigs - they say!
I'm out and about a lot, covering different events throughout the county and lately, I've been asked by several people about my pigs. "How are the pigs doing," they ask. I find myself answering their question first in my head because I was always taught to think before you speak. Then, I redact most of what I thought and end up saying, "Oh, they're good but they're a handful!"

I just wanted to say that those working for the Nash County Animal Control do a thankless job.  I had a momma cat and kitten stray show up at my house and could not find the owners.  I called  Animal Control and they came out and rescued the Momma and the kitten.  The gentleman that came out was very impressive on the way he handled them both.  He was gentle and kind and very humane in his dealing.  We often complain about the jobs our county is doing but I will have to say, you can’t complain about Animal Control.  They are very caring and compassionate people.

The senate and house may have to do what is best for N.C. taxpayers by doing minor tweaks to the 1959 involuntary annexation law as some lawmakers state that bond ratings are better due to involuntary annexation in N.C. This way of thinking has been shared by the League of Municipalities.  However, many county commissioners have submitted letters to the state with their support of reform.  What is best for the North Carolina Taxpayer is both reasonable and unreasonable with expense to a few to help the greater majority. All North Carolinians should share the expense that benefits them rather than oppression of a few.

If you can, please take inside, perhaps your shop or garage. If you don't make a special effort, like several we have heard about recently, that is considered neglect if not cruelty. If we hear of something bad happening to these dogs due to the cold, you will be sorry! Cats need extra Shelter too! Please, do the right thing!

1579.Word for the Week
The sons of Korah had a wonderful job. They served in the worship center of ancient Israel, the tabernacle (1 Chronicles 9:19). Their job was not one of high level. They were doorkeepers. Like modern day valets, they stood at the entrance to the tent erected for worship. These doorkeepers composed a song. One stanza typifies their attitude. "A day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness" (Psalm 84:10).
