1003.Nashville to beef up dilapidated manholes
A dozen leaking manholes will be relined in the Town of Nashville, helping with the town's inflow and infiltration problem. Council members approved a $27,000 with CTR Coatings for relining 12 sanitary sewer manholes. The approval comes at the recommendation of Mike Tolson, of Mack Gay and Associates.

NASHVILLE - The life and memory of a much-loved local woman, Pauline Thompson Battle, was commemorated with a Mayoral Proclamation at the June 4 meeting of the Nashville Town Council.Battle, who passed away in February at the age of 103, had one daughter, six sons, one brother, sixteen grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren and sixteen great-great-grandchildren.

The Coopers Ruritan Club celebrated volunteers last Thursday at their annual Appreciation Banquet. The club hosts the banquet each year just before the holidays to show their appreciation for volunteers who help the club with various fund-raisers throughout the year. Club President Steve Williams said without volunteers, the club couldn't do what it does.

Bessie Bone is celebrating a monumental day this week. On Thursday, November 29, Bone celebrates her 105th birthday. Bone was born and raised on a farm in the Westry area of Rocky Mount. She was one of seven children and helped her dad work on the farm.Bone married Paul Bone in 1941. He served in the military for three years and when he returned, the couple moved into a home at Easonburg, where they lived for 50 years.

A tree and blue pinwheels have been planted and placed at the Nash County school where a young girl attended prior to her homicide earlier this year.Christal Lane, 8, went to school at Coopers Elementary until her death Feb. 7.Last week, teachers and students along with a local organization came together to plant a tree in her memory and place dozens of pinwheels to commemorate Child Abuse Awareness Month.

After 103 years, Thomas M. Tyson was recognized for the service he had rendered to his state and for the cause he had believed. The family of Mr. Tyson held a memorial service on June 16, 2007 honoring the memory of the man who was the beginning of the Tyson family in Nash County.

1017.Red Oak hosts Opioid Awareness forum
The opioid crisis is tearing many families around the world apart. But in Red Oak on Tuesday night, it brought the community together. The town, along with Red Oak United Methodist Church and Still Standing Support Group, hosted a Community Matters Forum that focused on the opioid crisis. A panel of nine local residents were available to share their stories, answer questions and be a voice to those in attendance.

Pastor Whitehouse continued his sermon on the topic, “Without God, We Don’t Have a Chance- Part II”.  The scriptural basis was Matt. 6:13a.  We reiterated that we are not able to commend ourselves to God by being good.  It is by God’s grace that we can pray directly to him.  The choir sang “Take My Life, Lead Me Lord”, directed by Pastor Whitehouse.  Sanctuary flowers were given by Beth Baines and Kezia Griffin in memory of Spencer and Willie Griffin.

1021.Nash breaks ground for new EMS station
A long awaited project for both the Town of Nashville and Nash County was celebrated on Monday afternoon. The official ground breaking of Nashville's EMS Station was held at the site on Western Avenue in Nashville's Business Park on Monday afternoon. Nashville leaders, along with Nash County Commissioners, Planning Staff and Emergency Services Staff, were on hand for the celebration. Nash County Commissioners and Nashville Town Council members shared the duty of shoveling the first round of dirt for the project, a tradition in ground breaking ceremonies.

Ironically, Soap Box author Mike Brantley and I chose the same topic this week – outsourcing. However, my personal soap box this week is pointed directly toward our own industry – newspapers. Not the independently owned, community papers, but the giant corporate papers in the large markets that have gobbled up smaller papers and now are on a cost-cutting frenzy, outsourcing jobs to overseas companies to maintain a large, profitable bottom line.

For more than nine years, the Nash Health Care Volunteer Auxiliary has continued the   popular tradition of the “Lights of Love” project, and they hope 2013 will be the biggest and brightest year ever. The deadline for purchasing a light is Nov. 22. Time is running out to purchase a light in honor/memory of a loved one.

On a beautiful, sunshiny morning, Peachtree folks gathered for worship at the church. Sanctuary flowers were given by Susan and Lawrence Edwards in memory of Karen Dollar Edwards and Tom Moorefield. The memory verse for the month is Psalms 33:12:"Blessed is the nation, whose God is the Lord". The children's sermon was about the importance of small things. Beverly Wilson said that a rain shower is made up of drops of rain and a building is held together by small nails. Sand is made up of tiny rocks, but sand is much better to play in than big rocks. Small things are a blessing, and children are a blessing.

The Nash Health Care Volunteer Auxiliary will continue the popular Lights of Love tradition this year, with the proceeds going toward the new Pediatric Emergency Room. For $5, a light can be purchased in memory or honor of a loved one and placed on the Christmas trees in the hospital lobby, which will be on display throughout the holiday season.

1033.Bridge to honor slain state trooper
Nash County Commissioners approved a request to rename a Nash County bridge after Trooper Bobby Gene DeMuth, Jr., who lost his life in the line of duty in 2012. Major Brandon Medina, of the Nash County Sheriff's Office, presented the request to commissioners at their regular meeting earlier this month. The request was for the bridge over Red Oak Road to be named in honor and memory of DeMuth, who was from Red Oak.

Rocky Mount Fire Chief Mike Varnell earned his second redesignation of Chief Fire Officer (CFO) from the Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC) within the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) on July 29, 2017. According to the CPC, Varnell demonstrated through his "education, leadership and management skills" that he possessed "the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities required for the fire and emergency services profession."

The Nash Health Care Volunteer Auxiliary recently held its 8th annual  Lights of Love honor and remembrance ceremony. For $5, participants could purchase a light on a Christmas tree in memory or honor of someone.

Sunday was such a beautiful day. Easter is always special to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. At Beulah it was special for several other reasons also. At 6:30 a.m. we had a beautiful sunrise service which was followed by breakfast at the fellowship hall. We want to thank the men and a few of our ladies for their work making this all possible. Our minister, Daniel West was our speaker and we want to thank him also for an inspiring service. As the sun came up over the trees we all really felt God’s presence. We also knew everyone had some sadness too.

With 500 retail sites, plus the Internet, fairgoers are sure to find a convenient method for buying State Fair tickets in advance. For the first time, all 492 Food Lion grocery stores in the state will sell admission tickets at the cash register or customer service counter. Admission tickets plus ride sheets will be available at six malls, the State Fairgrounds and the Agriculture Building leading up to the fair.

1042.Audit: Former superintendent misused funds
Dr. Shelton Jefferies, superintendent of Nash County Schools from January 4, 2016 to August 2, 2019, "violated his contract and multiple policies and procedures," according to the final investigative report issued this week from State Auditor Beth Wood's office. His violations resulted "in $45,690 in unallowed and questionable expenses."Jefferies has 60 days to fully reimburse the system before the case will be handed to the district attorney for review.

A local Jeep club is hosting a community event to kick off its Toys for Tots drive. The Banana Slap Jeep Club will host Jeep Day at Mike Keffer Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Rocky Mount on Saturday, September 14. The Jeep Club is made of around 43 members, many of who are from Nashville, said James Williams, one of the founders of the club.

The recurring financial problems for the town of Princeville should be a “teaching” moment for many towns and cities heading in the same direction. Two Nashville families have donated a projector and drop-down screen to Cooley Library which will allow the library to better show movies and other special programs. The donations are from the LaRonia Boone family as well as the family of Andrew and Susan Tyson in memory of LaRonia and Andrew’s parents, Hubert and Pearl Tyson and LaRonia’s husband, Donald Thomas Boone.

1058.New courthouse nears completion this week
Court will soon be in session at Nash County's new courthouse, as construction on the new facility is wrapping up. Public Facilities and Utilities Director Mike Tolson said the final touches are underway now and everything on the outside should be complete this week. Life safety inspections, which involved checking the elevators and fire alarm systems, will also soon be complete.

Congratulations to proud Great-Grandmother, Jean Mellor, with the birth of her great-grandaughter! River Azalea Wollman was born on July 30 weighing 8 lbs. 2 oz. and was 21 inches long. Proud parents are Logan and Veronica. The family lives in Virginia Beach, VA. Renovations continue at Ennis Park which include a new veteran's memorial, upgraded playground, and also a Little Free Library.

On Sunday morning, Peachtree Church held another of its celebrations in conjunction with its Bicentennial anniversary.  The sanctuary flowers were given in memory of Harold Edwards by his wife, Annie Belle Edwards.  This service was dedicated to reviewing “Missions” efforts of the past 200 years.  It was in 1831 that Peachtree joined with other Baptist churches that believed in “missions”.  A visit by “Mother Time” surprised the group.  She came to check up on what had happened in the past 200 years...

A little over a year ago, Nash UNC Health Care started its "Caring Canines of Nash" pet therapy program with two dogs, Elsie and Lily. Due to its popularity and success the program has expanded to seven registered therapy dogs and five handlers."Our pet therapy teams have now visited 387 patients, and they've even delivered Christmas ornaments, Valentine's cards, and flower baskets," according to Amy Winham, Director of Service and Operational Excellence at the hospital.

Attendant to Renee Ellmers speaking tour as far as content accuracy was quite enlightening. Spring Hope got a dose of funny numbers from someone who was financially scalding us (7-9% rising hospital / health expenses) during her nursing career. She tried playing poker with some financial cards -and kept others hidden. She ignored facts while  playing with 2 decks. Two Republican presidents failed to get health care reform in previous efforts that she left unmentioned. Now we have it. Jealousy is rampant even as 54% of Americans want it. They see it can be implemented with mild and slight alterations.

On Sunday morning, after a week of rainy weather, Peachtree folks gathered for worship.  Sanctuary flowers were given by Beverly Wilson in memory of her father, John Beverley Privette.  The special music was by the Peachtree Men.  They sang a medley of “Everybody Needs the Lord” and “He Touched Me”.  Jerry Hobgood sang the solo part and Jane May directed and accompanied them.

Let me seeeee.... what's happening up here in the Aventon Community. Not much! Our Swift Creek Bridge is being worked on causing a major detour. Traffic in front of my house is nothing like it normally is LOL! I love it! I don't know how long the bridge will be closed, but D.O.T, please take your time in repairing it. I would love to tell everyone a short cut to Hwy 43 would be going down Hilliardston Rd to Cooper Rd instead of going by Alston's Garage, but I hate to send the traffic over thatta way. HeHeHe!

UDC Bethel Heroes Chapter 636 held its October meeting at the Braswell Memorial Library.  The speaker for this event was UDC member Margie Parker Brantley.    Mrs. Brantley spoke on her recent visit to the Civil War Museum at the old  Exchange Hotel in Gordonsville, Virginia.  Her speech included the history of the Museum as well as photographs of it as it appears today.

The worship service at Peachtree on Sunday morning was a ‘9/11 Patriot’s Day Service’.  Special thoughts were given to the memory of those who lost their lives in the terrorists’ attacks on that infamous day.  The choir sang “A prayer for America’ under the direction of the pastor.  For the meditation, Jane May played a beautiful piano arrangement of “God Bless America”.

Born Velma Gladys Shearin on March 17, 1933 in Halifax County to the late John Wesley and Jennie P. Shearin. Her family moved to Nash County in 1942 and she resided there until her death on March 14, 2010. She worked at Rocky Mount Mills in the finishing Department for thirty years. After a short lived retirement she began to care for her great grandchildren on a daily basis until RA wouldn’t allow her to any longer. She was married for fifty two-years to her late husband, John Washington Jones. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Emery and James Shearin.

Mike Flora, of Rocky Mount, a member of the Rocky Mount Lion's Club, was recently elected as the District Governor of Lion's Club International for the District of 31-J in North Carolina. Flora was officially installed at the 89th Lion's Club International Convention, which was held in Boston, Massachusetts June 30 through July 4, 2006. His term will run from July 2006 through July 2007.

A Nash County resident had the chance of a lifetime recently, when she was asked to sing the National Anthem at a local rally with Vice President Mike Pence. Brenda Jones said she was shocked to receive the phone call just a few days before the rally, which was held on Saturday at the Rocky Mount-Wilson Airport. Jones said someone had heard her perform at a local rally and called asking if she'd be willing to do the same at the Nash County GOP sponsored rally for Pence.

1079.Destruction of historic church prompts lawsuit
For some Nash County natives, the destruction of an old church landmark has led to heartbreak – and lawsuits. Sandy Grove Primitive Baptist Church, which was founded in 1813, was torn down in June, 2011, despite pleas by members of the community who dispute the ownership of the property and desire to continue to use the graveyard on the church grounds.

RALEIGH- The memory of a local Army helicopter pilot shot down in 1966 over Vietnam was refreshed last month on the floor of the North Carolina House Chamber: the life and sacrifice of Captain Hugh R. Nelson, Jr., of Rocky Mount, was applauded through the efforts of Representative Allen Chesser.Chesser made a representative statement in Raleigh June 18 as Nelson's family- his children Debbie McKnight and Tripp Nelson, as well as grandson Duncan Dees Nelson, attended.
