Lemus named director of My Sister's House
Lemus named director of My Sister's House

Emily Lemus has been volunteering with My Sister's House since she was 15 years old. On February 9, she became an employee of the organization, as she began in a new role of overseeing the organization as the executive director.
Lemus, who is originally from the Sandy Cross area, came to the organization as a teenager to work on service projects for her school. Lemus said she chose My Sister's House because her grandmother, Joyce Ann Pope, was a victim of domestic violence.

Nashville Fire Auxiliary president passes away

Mary Lee Bass, the backbone of the Nashville Fire Department Auxiliary, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017. She was 73 years of age.
Bass was born and raised in Red Oak. She attended Beulah Church of Christ and served as the church's organist.
In Nashville, Bass was known for her role in the Nashville Fire Department Auxiliary, where she served as president.
Stanley Edwards a member of the organization, said Bass was a person who got things done.

Longtime volunteer, business owner passes

Dorothy "Dot" McLawhorn Joyner, who owned Joyner's Supermarket in Nashville and was a long-time volunteer in the Nashville community, passed away last Wednesday, February 15, 2017. She was 88 years old.
Joyner's list of volunteer activities is lengthy. She was a long-time active member of Nashville United Methodist Church. She also served as a Cub Scout Den Mother when her children were younger.

Castalia FD charter member, WWII vet dies

Linwood "Pee Wee" Harper passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2017, leaving behind a legacy in his hometown of Castalia. He was 93 years old.
Harper was the last surviving World War II veteran in Castalia. He served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945. Pearl Harbor was bombed on the same day Harper left Nash County for duty, on December 7, 1941.
On December 21, 1944, Harper was injured when a German land mine exploded.

Video of Nash deputy dancing with Nashville boy goes viral

A video posted on social media by the Nash County Sheriff's Office has gone viral and put a Nashville boy and a deputy in the spotlight.
Captain Eddie Moore posted the video last Monday, February 13. Moore said he and Deputy Cody Williams were outside of the Nash County Sheriff's Office working on the camera in Williams' car when a young boy named Jason came up to talk to the officers.
Moore said Jason lives near the Sheriff's Office and started talking to Williams about dancing.

BPW Opry is set for March 3

Nash Arts will once again host the annual Elsie Clark Memorial Nashville Opry on Friday, March 3.
The Opry is sponsored by Nashville's Business and Professional Women organization and is in its 39th year. The event is a fund raiser for the group and all funds raised go towards scholarships for area youth.
The event is named after former member Elsie Clark, who was one of the main organizers of the Opry, which started in 1977.

Dancing with the Arts is Friday

Six local couples will dance to raise money for Nash Arts, as part of the fourth annual Dancing with the Arts.
The event is slated for Friday, February 24 at 7 p.m.
This year's celebrity couples include Nashville's Police Chief Tom Bashore and his daughter, Melanie, Nashville Fire Battalion Chief Jason Edwards and his wife, Ashley, former Nash County Sheriff Dick Jenkins and his daughter-in-law Kelly, Trevor and Tiffany Delano, Mark and Lisa Carpenter and Casey and Brittany Pierce.

Weird happenings that will make you wonder

It's time to clean out the notebook of odds and ends:
•There is a janitor in San Francisco who is literally cleaning up.
Liang Zhao Zhang, who cleans stations for the Bay Area Rapid Transit, cleared more than $250,000 in 2015.
Oakland's KTVU recently did an investigation and found that in addition to his $58,000 base pay, Zhang made $162,000 in overtime, which together with additional benefits ran his compensation north of $271,000.

BPW hosts annual Opry

Dear Editor: As we finalize plans for the 2017 Nashville Opry, I feel a great pride in being a part of Nash County and the legacy of which I am privileged to be a part.
On March 3, 2017 the Nashville Business and Professional Women in conjunction with the Nash Arts Center will host the Nashville Opry. Proceeds will go towards the Hazel Vantine Scholarship which is awarded annually to graduating high school seniors and working women returning to school to further their education

Nash County has lost three very special people

What a sad week it was for Nash County.
Three very special people passed away, leaving voids in the lives of their family, friends and the community.
Ms. Dot Joyner, Mary Lee Bass, both of Nashville, and Pee Wee Harper, of Castalia, will certainly be missed in their respective communities.
All three were well known faces because of their giving spirits.

Indian Tribal members to have work featured at Maria V. Howard Center

Two North Carolina Indian tribal members are exhibiting their paintings at The Maria V. Howard Arts Center, located in The Imperial Centre, at 270 Gay Street, Rocky Mount. The exhibit will remain open until May 14.
On First Friday March 3, 2017 from 6 to 9 p.m., Dreamweaver will be giving tours of the Woodland Indian Journey exhibit and Lotus Blossom will be demonstrating scaling techniques.

Nashville man elected as Assistant Rabban

Noble Carl Wayne Smith, of Nashville and a member of the Rocky Mount Shrine Club, was elected as the Assistant Rabban at the Sudan Shriners annual meeting and election of officers on January 28, 2017 in New Bern. The term Assistant Rabban is a ceremonial title given within Shriners International to one of the seven elected officers of a temple and as such is a voting member of the Divan (Board of Directors). Carl is the owner of Eastern Environmental Management LLC, a full service environmental cleanup business.

The Valentine Law Firm of Nashville recently announced that Stephen Webb has been named a partner in the firm. Webb is a Nash County native raised in Momeyer. He graduated from Southern Nash Senior High School in 1999 and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received a B.A. in Political Science. He also attended law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 2010. He and his wife, Jennie, have two daughters.

As part of the Diversity Month events at Nash Community College, Earl Ijames, Curator for North Carolina Museum of History presented "Colored Confederates" for NCC students, faculty and staff. The film is a culmination of Ijames' research project documenting the roles of enslaved and free people of color who served in various capacities in the Confederacy and the Confederate Army. Using primary and genealogical sources, the presentation conveys the significance of Confederates of Color before the Emancipation Proclamation and after the creation of the United States Colored Troops.

North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation

The Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation was held December 4-6 at the Sheraton Four Seasons and Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. Nash County Farm Bureau President Mr. Greg Bunn was recognized among his peers at the Presidents' and Agents' Luncheon. Farm Bureau President Larry Wooten presented each winning County President with a limited edition Case knife. Each county's agency force worked hard to qualify their County President for this recognition. Special plaques were also presented to the agents and agencies whose production was superior during the contest period.

AWS Triangle Section meeting

Nash Community College recently hosted its first AWS Triangle Section meeting of 2017. Stewart Harris, District 4 Director of the American Welding Society was present to explain the many welding scholarships available through AWS and the benefits of student membership. Jay Manning, AWS Section Chairman and NCC Instructor gave a tour and overview of NCC's award-winning welding program.

NCC hosts school counselors at annual breakfast event

Nash Community College hosted area school counselors at the annual Counselors' Breakfast held Tuesday, February 7. The event provides an opportunity for college officials to share updates with school staff and to thank counselors for the role they play in helping students plan for a successful future. NCC President Dr. Bill Carver and Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Shelton Jefferies both spoke of the strong partnership between the college and the school system.
