NC Wesleyan University receives funding from NSF

North Carolina Wesleyan University (NCWU) has been awarded a grant of $251,835 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for an innovative project titled "WESPATHS: Waterways for Environmental Science-Promoting Advancement and Training for Hands-On Supports." This award marks NCWU's first NSF grant since 1972 and aims to bolster the university's Environmental Science Program through strategic recruitment and retention efforts.

Rocky Mount woman to appear on larceny charges from employer

What started out as a reported theft of $8.19 snowballed into an August 1 court appearance to answer multiple larceny charges for a Rocky Mount woman, accused of stealing money from her employer's till.
Brittany Evelyn Butler, 34, of 6729 Reedy Branch Road is charged with seven counts of larceny from the Rose Mart where she worked over the course of three days in July, according to court records.

Rocky Mount man receives 600 months federal prison sentence

RALEIGH - A Rocky Mount cocaine dealer was sentenced to 600 months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm by a felon. On April 11, 2024, Andre Donnell Downey, age 37, pled guilty to the charges.
"This high-volume drug dealer, who previously served a federal sentence for trafficking cocaine, quickly returned to a life of crime following his release from prison," said U.S. Attorney Michael Easley.

RECALL NOTICE: Troxler warns against consuming Diamond Shruumz-brand products

RALEIGH - Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler is warning residents against consuming Diamond Shruumz-brand products following a nationwide recall after 78 people in 28 states became ill after consuming products, including three in North Carolina. In addition, inspectors with the department's Food and Drug Protection Division are canvassing retail stores across the state to see if any of these products are still on store shelves.

NASHVILLE - The Graphic has a new advertising salesperson: meet D.J. Gifford, who came on board July 8 and is out pounding the streets in the heat, starting in Rocky Mount.
"D.J. fills the shoes of longtime advertising guru Deborah Tucker, who retired from The Graphic in 2021 after more than 35 years of service," said Nashville Graphic Publisher Jo Anne Cooper. "She will service Rocky Mount, Wilson, Spring Hope and Bailey accounts as well as many rural businesses in between."
