Town applauds fire chief

Nashville Fire Chief Chris Joyner was recognized last Tuesday night at Nashville's Town Council meeting for recently being named the American Legion Department of North Carolina Firefighter of the Year.
In addition to being the North Carolina Firefighter of the Year, Joyner was also named the Southeast Regional Firefighter of the year.

Nashville changes public policy

Nashville's Town Council approved a more citizen-friendly public comment policy at their regular meeting last Tuesday night.
The policy now allows the public to sign up to speak during the public comment period on the night of the meeting instead of having to sign up 10 days prior to the town's meeting. Those wishing to speak can now sign up just 20 minutes prior to the meeting.

Nash funds $3.2 million radio project

Nash County Commissioners approved $3.2 million in funding that will pave the way for a new public safety radio project.
Commissioners agreed on the $3.2 million in funding on Monday during the board's regular meeting. The loan will come from Southern Bank over a five-year-period at a 2.6 percent interest rate

FOURTH OF JULY

Castalia celebrated America's 242nd birthday last Wednesday with its annual July Fourth celebration.
The festivities kicked off in the morning with vendors but really got started up at noon with a special tribute to veterans.
Smalltown USA has been partnering with the town to offer the space for the tribute over the past few years.

Filing begins for school board seats

Filing for five seats on the Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education began last Friday and two have since filed for the District 9 seat.
Incumbent LaShawnda Washington filed to run for the District 9 Seat she has held for the past four years. Robert Cordell also filed for the District 9 seat.
In addition to the District 9 seat, seats in District 2, 4, 6 and 8 are also up for grabs.

Building birdhouses has become therapeutic for Nashville resident Glen Rackley.
Rackley, 86, started building birdhouses around six years ago after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.
Rackley said he needed a hobby to keep his mind off things and had always had an interest in birds.

Spring Hope hires new officer

The town of Spring Hope has hired a new full-time police officer.
Police Chief Anthony Puckett introduced Officer John Wilson to the Board of Commissioners and residents at the Monday night meeting.
Officer Wilson is originally from New York and has been a resident of North Carolina since 1991.

Governor Cooper announces local appointments

Governor Roy Cooper recently announced his nominations and appointments to 17 boards, commissions, and councils. The Governor nominated and appointed 33 well-qualified North Carolinians to these various positions.
"These committed North Carolinians will serve our state well," Gov. Cooper said.

Jazz pianist to perform at Cherry Hill Plantation

David Esleck of the David Esleck Trio will give a solo piano performance of jazz music at Cherry Hill on Sunday, July 15th. The program will begin at 3:00 PM, and admissions will be taken at the door. This is the third annual Edwina Rooker Endowed Concert, established in honor of the late Warrenton resident and long-time friend of the Cherry Hill Historical Foundation.

Summer youth production starts July 20th

The Summer Youth Production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will take place July 20-22 at The Theatre at the Imperial Centre for the Arts & Sciences.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat tells the Biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, 11 brothers and the coat of many colors, Imperial Centre Theatre Manager Brooke Edwards said.

Castalia wraps up Family Fun Day plans

The town board of Castalia had a couple of visitors at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday.
First, Rev. Victor Fenner of Castalia Missionary Baptist Church addressed the board. The Family Fun Day at the Castalia Park is in its final stages of planning/preparation. Fenner first approached the board about the idea in March.

RMPD investigates homicide

The Rocky Mount Police Department is investigating a July Fourth homicide.
Officers responded to the 400 block of S. Church Street around 6:15 a.m. last Wednesday, July 4 in reference to a suspicious event. When officers arrived, they found 58-year-old John Mack Caudle decased on the scene.

NRMS launches new virtual academy

The Nash-Rocky Mount Public School System is launching a Virtual Academy in hopes of meeting the needs of non-traditional students.
The Virtual Academy is a district priority for high student achievement and was initially presented to the Board of Education in May. The academy will offer a large variety of courses for students enrolled in grades 9-12.

There is plenty of good news and good people

Despite what the world and all the complainers in your life might have you think, there is plenty of good folks left in this world.
A collective, worldwide cheer went up on Tuesday morning when it was announced that all of the children trapped in a cave in Thailand had been rescued.
The story, which captivated so many of us, could easily have ended in tragedy, especially after the soccer team disappeared for nine days.

Apparently, if you are raising more than one little boy, you are in a special club of exhausted moms just trying to survive.
I think I'm the leader of that club.
On several occassions recently, I've had people tell me things like, "I don't know how you do it," or "your boys are full of energy! No wonder you are tired."

Protecting our service members from bad actors

As we celebrated our nation on the 4th of July, we must also remember those who work to keep us safe. July is Military Consumer Month, a good time to highlight the work my office does to protect our service members from scams and fraud.
Unfortunately, members of the armed forces are especially vulnerable to being victims of scams and frauds.

Rocky Mount woman is charged with felony fraud

A Rocky Mount woman was recently charged with felony insurance fraud.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of Lashunda Bobbitt, 38, of Rocky Mount. Bobbitt was charged with felony insurance fraud and making a false report to police, which is a misdemeanor.

Ten complete Basic Law Enforcement Training at ECC

Edgecombe Community College graduated ten cadets from its Fifth Basic Academy for Basic Law Enforcement Training on June 19.
The graduation ceremony featured comments by Angel Rodriguez Jr., platoon leader.
The cadets completed an intensive 20-week program and have passed the certification exam mandated by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Several roads slated to be resurfaced in Twin Counties

Sections of several highways in Edgecombe and Nash counties will be resurfaced over the next year.
