Confederate monument meeting for discussion slated for July 24

Building on positive momentum, the Human Relations Commission has scheduled an additional Community Conversations dates for the public to unite and discuss the confederate monument at Battle Park. The Booker T. Theater in downtown Rocky Mount will hold a meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24. WPR Consulting will once again facilitate the discussions.

On a lovely Sunday morning, Peachtree folks gathered at the church for worship. Sanctuary flowers were given by Fran Bunn in honor of her husband, Bob, to celebrate his birthday which was Friday. Special music was a vocal solo of "In the Garden" by Marta Whitehouse.
Pastor Whitehouse chose as his sermon title, "Allow God's Sovereign Hand to turn up the Heat".

Red Oak Baptist Church and the community celebrated Independence Day on Sunday, July 1 with food, fun, and fellowship! Everyone enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers with the fixings along with other side dishes and of course, dessert. Children and adults tried their hand at the dunking booth trying to dunk pastors Chris Fowler and and Nate James.

RMHS cadets participate in Officer Leadership School

Ten students from Rocky Mount High School's AFJROTC Detachment NC-933 joined nearly 250 more students from around the state (and one school from South Carolina) on Father's Day for the Cadet Officer Leadership School (COLS) ran by Air Force Junior ROTC and hosted at Fayetteville State University. The seven-day event is a challenging and fast-paced training program that seeks to be a part of each individual's opportunity to reach their full potential as a cadet, leader and citizen.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Nash Rec is now just two team victories away from an undefeated regular season -- but the bigger prize will be when the Sharks defend their Nash-Halifax Swim League championship on July 28.
But first things first as the Sharks remained perfect for the summer campaign last Thursday while closing out a regular season sweep against rival Roanoke Valley.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Participation was a bit sparse for last Thursday's Nash-Halifax Swim League showdown between long-time rivals Birchwood and host Westridge -- mainly due to the fact that the event was behind held one day after the Fourth of July Holiday.
Still, there were plenty of heroics as Westridge was able to secure a 419-132 decision over the Barracudas at the Westridge Pool.

Nash Central proved its mettle this spring by winning the Eastern Plains Conference's boys and girls championships -- despite coming off a 2017 campaign that saw the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs boast its largest-ever college signee class.

NEW YORK -- Christian Buffaloe, local Kyokushin Karate fighter, recently entered the prestigious Japan-sponsored "2018 Kyokushin Karate AAAOC Full Contact Championships" in New York.
Buffaloe, a seven-time Kyokushin youth & teen champion, fought for the first time as an adult in this world-level event.
