105 YEARS

Bessie Bone is celebrating a monumental day this week. On Thursday, November 29, Bone celebrates her 105th birthday.
Bone was born and raised on a farm in the Westry area of Rocky Mount. She was one of seven children and helped her dad work on the farm.
Bone married Paul Bone in 1941. He served in the military for three years and when he returned, the couple moved into a home at Easonburg, where they lived for 50 years.

The faith-based community can play a big role in helping to combat the addiction problem, according to Pastor Mike Dixon.
Dixon is the pastor of Oakdale Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, which supports the L.I.F.E. ministry.
L.I.F.E. stands for Living in Freedom Everyday and is based on the words of Jesus in John 10:10, "I have come that they may have LIFE and have it more abundantly."

Town launches lights contest

The Town of Nashville's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is encouraging Nashville residents and business owners to get into the holiday spirit.
The town will host its first annual Christmas Lights Competition with a winner being selected on December 15.
Marguerite Bishop, Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, said the idea came up last year while talking about Christmas.

Nashville's Chamber of Commerce celebrated the newest chapter of Madelyn's Flowers and Gifts by hosting a ribbon cutting last week.
Kaylan Collie, of Nashville, purchased the business earlier this year from Renee Davis and hopes to grow the business while also maintaining the business's long-time legacy.

Children's Parade is Saturday

Nashville will host its annual Children's Christmas Parade on December 1 starting at 4 p.m. with special music in front of the Nash County Courthouse.
Following the music, the children's parade will begin.
Youth 12 and under decorate their bikes, wagons, scooters and other non-motorized items and parade from the Nash County Courthouse to the Battleship area, where the town's Christmas Tree is lit. Prior to the tree lighting, the top four parade entries are awarded cash prizes.

Red Oak's tree lighting is Saturday

Red Oak will host its tree lighting event on December 1. The community-wide event will feature a craft fair and food vendors from 3 until 6 p.m. Train rides around the park will also start at 3 p.m. and run until 6:30 p.m. The Red Oak Middle School Band will play a selection of Christmas songs at 3:30 and then Meredith Davis Johnson will perform at 4 for a Holiday Concert.

Getting organized has always been an issue for me.
The concept of being organized excites me greatly, and I have a very positive attitude towards it. However, as my forays into banjo playing and inventing (invisible fence for babies, shirt pit pads for overly sweaty gentlemen) have shown, good intentions will only get you so far.

Elected official responds to political allegations

Dear Editor: For the past thirteen years I have had the privilege of pastoring Word Tabernacle Church where we believe that not everyone in the community will belong to our church but the church belongs to everyone in the community. RMPD make arrests in recent homicides

Rocky Mount Police have made arrests in two homicides that have happened in the city within the past few months.
Police arrested two men in connection with the September 21 homicide that occurred at the Tarrytown Beach Bingo.
Officers responded to an armed robbery and shooting at Tarrytown Beach Bingo around 11:44 p.m. When officers arrived, they located three victims who had been shot. One victim, Nesha Pitt, 33, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officials with the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice have named Maxine Evans-Armwood of Rocky Mount as Director of Juvenile Court Services. Evans-Armwood most recently served as central area administrator of Court Services.

Nashville to serve as drop off for Santa letters

Nashville youth will have a place to drop off letters to Santa, thanks to Nashville's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.
Starting Saturday, December 1, Nashville's Town Hall will be a drop-off point for Santa letters.
Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Director Marguerite Bishop said those who include a return address will receive a response from Santa.

K-9 joins force at Spring Hope PD

Spring Hope's Police Department recently announced its newest member of the force; K-9 Jax.
Jax was purchased with federal forfeiture and seizure funds from Southern Police Canine in Momeyer.
Jax is a 14-month old German Shepard imported from Hungary. He has been assigned to officer D. Radford. The pair recently completed the 240-hour canine handler course at Southern Police Canine.

(Mallie Battle Wiggins, Orville's grandmother was a member there until her death). They have two children, Travis Lamar Wiggins and Natalie Nicole Wiggins.
