At the Nash Community College board meeting held Monday, November 19, 2018, Damian Tucker was sworn in by Superior Court Judge Quentin Sumner as a new member of the NCC Board of Trustees. Tucker was appointed by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to fill the seat of Keith Harris whose term expired. Harris began serving as a Board member in 2014.

Young adult ministry at local church helps Bassett Center

The Young Adults Missionary Ministry of Union Hill Church, or YAMS as they are better known, recently spent some time at the Bassett Center in Rocky Mount, providing needed supplies.
Xavier Harrison, who works with the youth ministry along with Stephanie Brown and Pastor-Elect Rev. Sidney Dunston, said the group holds monthly meetings and from those discussions around the lessons, periodically finding service projects in the community to participate in.

A Gift Wrap Fundraiser will be held at Red Oak Baptist Church on Saturdays, December 1 and 15 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and on Wednesday, December 19 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the fellowship hall in the main building. Monetary donations accepted. Fundraiser benefits the youth and children's summer camp.
The First Annual Red Oak Christmas Tree Lighting will be Saturday, December 1 with festivities beginning at 3:00 pm.

ROCKY MOUNT -- As part of its recent rebuilding phase, Barton College's baseball program has accentuated the fine art of local recruiting.
That quest as paid off as several area standouts have signed with the Bulldogs, including the likes of Nash Central's Payton Bass and Bunn's Davie Morgan.
Another name can be added to that burgeoning list as another Nash Central standout -- senior pitcher Hunter Robinson -- inked a deal last week to continue his diamond career at Barton, a Division II school located in Wilson.

RED OAK -- The annual Northern Nash I-95 Duals Wrestling Tournament had an all-inclusive Nash County flair this time around.
That's because Southern Nash made its first-ever appearance at the latest installment of the duals, which were held last Tuesday at the NNHS Gymnasium.
Long-time entrants Rocky Mount, Nash Central and host Northern Nash also participated, giving observers an early glimpse of how the 2018-19 mat campaign might go in Nash County.

NASH COUNTY -- Back in the Fall of 2017, Nash Central High School Athletic Director Kyle Bain was all smiles when he made a trip to Rocky Mount HS to present a Bulldogs' T-shirt to RM AD Mike Gainey.
The shirt swap was part of a friendly wager made between the schools before the annual NC-RM football game, which was won that year by the Bulldogs.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2018 All-Conference awards for football.
Methodist University's Vontre Howard was named Offensive Player of the Year while Brevard College's Dalton Cole earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
North Carolina Wesleyan College's Antonio Johnson collected Defensive Player of the Year accolades.

NASH COUNTY -- Last Friday's action in the Class 3-A State Playoffs proved to be cruel for both the Southern Nash Firebirds and Rocky Mount Gryphons.
Nash County's prep football campaign came to an abrupt end in the second round as the Firebirds were stunned by a 57-56 margin at home against Eastern Alamance, while the Gryphons were defeated 30-0 on the road versus Fayetteville Terry Sanford.

MILWAUKEE - Baseball America has named the Milwaukee Brewers as its 2018 Organization of the Year.
The announcement was made recently by Executive Editor of Baseball America J.J. Cooper.
"We honored the Brewers as our Organization of the Year not just because they had a very successful big league season," said Cooper.
