Northern outlasts foe FHS

FRANKLINTON -- Last season, Coach Henry Drake's Northern Nash Knights came to Franklinton with one loss and struggled to get a win over the Red Rams, who were struggling through a two-victory campaign.
This year wasn't much different. A solid second half after a slow start was able to help the Knights win their 15th straight triumph by way of a 66-51 victory over Franklinton last Thursday night in Big East Conference boys hoops action at the FHS Gymnasium in Franklin County.

FARMVILLE -- When Farmville Central won the Eastern Plains Conference Tournament Boys Basketball Championship last season, it was considered to be just the beginning for the Jaguars, who were able to take the title despite having a roster loaded with freshmen and sophomores.
Farmville Central, a state champion three years ago, has picked up right where it off this time around.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College men's basketball team thrilled the sold-out home crowd with an exhilarating come-from-behind overtime victory over visiting conference foe Pfeiffer University 128-123 last Saturday afternoon for its fifth straight win.
The Bishops used balanced scoring throughout the game including double-digit points from six different players to keep pace with the hot-shooting Falcons.

NCSU players nab preseason honors

RALEIGH -- North Carolina State University baseball's Patrick Bailey, Kent Klyman and Will Wilson have been named D1Baseball Preseason All-Americans in advance of the 2019 season.
The Wolfpack is one of just four teams nationally with three players on the team and the only program from the ACC. All three earned a spot on the third team.

RED OAK -- For the second time in three seasons, Northern Nash's Varsity Cheerleading team was able to capture the Big East Conference Championship as part of an event held at Rocky Mount High School in December.
The girls were able to overcome a high-level of adversity throughout the past season.

GREENVILLE -- The East Carolina University baseball team received its fourth preseason national ranking of the 2019 season after being picked No. 12 by Baseball America the publication announced Monday.
The Pirates have also earned national rankings from D1Baseball (No. 11), Perfect Game (No. 11) and Collegiate Baseball (No. 35).

PUBLIC MEETING TONIGHT

Nashville's Town Council is considering a proposal to purchase Birchwood Country Club and is seeking input from the public.
A special called meeting is being held on Thursday, January 24 at 7 p.m. in Town Council Chambers, located in Cooley Library at 114 W Church Street, Nashville.
Interim Town Manager Leonard Barefoot said Birchwood was considering disposal of their property and the board had discussed, in closed session, the possibility of acquiring the property.

A Nashville native was named the first female command sergeant major for the United States Army Human Resources Command (HRC).
Command Sergeant Major Lynice D. Thorpe-Noel was welcomed during a Change of Responsibility Ceremony held at Waybur Theater in Fort Knox last Thursday, January 17. The ceremony was officiated by Major Geneneral Jason T. Evans, HRC commanding general.

Fire claims two homes

The Nash County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a fire that destroyed a home a family had recently purchased.
The fire was dispatched a little after 1 a.m. on Monday, January 21 on Bayview Drive, which has a Rocky Mount address but is in the Red Oak fire district.
According to Fire Marshal Chris Jenkins, the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Like most of America these days, I continually stay vigilant for things that might offend me.
There are a growing number of stores these days that insult me when I attempt to pay cash (which is still king, by the way). The clerk takes my bill, marks it with a pen, hesitates, and then proceeds on. Sometimes, a particularly aggressive worker will hold my bill up to the light.

The Town of Nashville has submitted a proposal to the board of directors of Birchwood Country Club to purchase the facility, property and swimming pool. A special called meeting will take place TONIGHT AT 7 P.M. The meeting notice states it is a called meeting with the opportunity for public comments.
Apparently Birchwood has been in a downward financial spiral for sometime and is now sadly at the end of the proverbial rope. At some point there were reports a private developer had plans of acquiring the property. We're told that plan flopped.

The problem is sometimes we think suffering is self-inflicted.
