Nashville hires new town manager
Nashville hires new town manager

Nashville's Town Council was met with a full house of citizens Tuesday night, with several speaking in support of hiring Interim Police Chief Joseph Corbett as the town's permanent chief rather than a new applicant.
The council also announced, and approved, the final contract hiring Randy Lansing from Garner, Iowa as Nashville's town manager. Lansing will officially begin June 4th.

Nash County dissolves partnership

Despite requests from several local business leaders, Nash County Commissioners voted on Monday to end their relationship with the Carolinas Gateway Partnership.
Commissioners voted 5-2 to discontinue being a partner and instead take on economic development as a county department.

CHAMPION - Nash County 4-H'er Page Strickland walks her goat around the arena on Tuesday during the Meat Goat Show at the Eastern Carolina Livestock Show and Sale. The sale was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 2 and 3 for Edgecombe, Nash and Halifax County youth. Goats and Lambs were shown on Tuesday along with the Cloverbud show. On Wednesday, the Market Hog and Market Steer Show took place, along with the 4-H Exceptional Exhibitors Show.

School board nixes teacher pay cuts

A popular blogger and former Nash County resident spoke up for teachers on Monday at the Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education Meeting.
Adrian Wood, whose blog, "Tales of an Educated Debutante," said she decided to attend and speak at Monday night's meeting because she cares.
The meeting drew a crowd of teachers, parents and other community members, so many that people had to line up down the hallway during the meeting because the board room was over capacity.

NRMS hosts safety forum

The District Parent Advisory Commitee of the Nash-Rocky Mount Public School System hosted a safety forum on Tuesday night to give the community a chance to ask questions on safety measures within the school system.
There was no official agenda for the forum. Instead, attendees were given a chance to ask questions to a safety panel of around 14 members.

NCSO promotes Brake to Major

The Nash County Sheriff's Office celebrated the promotion of David Brake on Monday, April 1 to Major.
Brake graduated from Northern Nash High School in 1986. He later joined the United States Marine Corps in 1987 and attended Basic training in Paris Island, South Carolina. Major Brake was stationed in San Diego California for Infantry training school.

Ceremony honors Vietnam Veterans

Vietnam Veterans were honored on Saturday during a special recognition ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount.
March 29 was designated National Vietnam War Veterans Day in 2017 by President Donald Trump.
The Joint Veterans Committee recognizes a veteran each month at the Veterans Memorial but this month, chose to recognized all Vietnam Veterans.

Escaped inmate caught
Escaped inmate caught

The last of the five inmates who escaped from the Nash County Detention Center was apprehended early Sunday morning in South Carolina.
Laquaris Rashaad Battle, 22, was located in Hardeeville, South Carolina during a traffic stop, the Nash County Sheriff's Office reported.
Battle was one of five inmates who escaped from the Nash County Detention Center while in the exercise yard on Monday, March 25.

40th Annual Jabberwock set for April 14th at Dunn Center

With the theme "Dream...It's Possible" the Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will present its 40th Jabberwock in the Dunn Center of Performing Arts at NC Wesleyan College April 14 at 4 p.m.
Jabberwock originated in 1925 and is a fundraiser competition used to underwrite scholarships and encourage participants to develop their amateur talents.

History students spent part of their Saturday cleaning up Stonewall Manor as part of a national preservation event.
Students from Nash Central High, Northern Nash High and Rocky Mount High School participated in the annual Park Day, which was led by Nash Central High School history teacher Renny Taylor.

Fun Bike Ride is May 4th

The sixth annual Rocky Mount Fun Bike Ride takes off on Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. at Sunset Park. Ending where it begins, the 6.5-mile route will take riders through four national historic districts, downtown and the Tar River Trail. Also, a Bike Rodeo for younger children will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The rodeo teaches safe riding practices to those learning to ride.
