Nashville mulls trash problem

The Town of Nashville is considering forming a committee dedicated to keeping the town clean.
Trash is becoming a problem in Nashville, Tony Koenig told council members at a meeting last week.
Koenig said he has become so concerned about the amount of trash on Western Avenue, he has started to spend his free time picking up trash. Recently, he said he picked up 15 large orange DOT bags of trash from Barnes Street to just past ACDI.

A local ministry is continuing to meet the needs of the community while also searching for a way to meet their own needs.
A Touch of a Father's Love Ministry has until the end of the year to find a permanent home for its operations. Currently, the ministry is leasing a building in Spring Hope.

Nash receives $900K in COVID-19 grant funds

Nash County is one of 34 municipal and county governments in North Carolina to receive grant funding in response to the economic and public health impact of COVID-19.
Close to $27 million in grant funding was awarded through the Community Development Block Grant Coronavirus program to assist local governments with subsistence payments to prevent evictions and utility disconnections in their communities.

Nashville veteran honored at flag ceremony

Two Nash County veterans were honored for their service on Saturday during a flag raising ceremony.
The Joint Veterans Committee of Nash and Edgecombe Counties hosted the ceremony, which is held each month at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount. The ceremonies honor a deceased veteran of Nash or Edgecombe County by presenting the families a flag which is flown over the park in their honor.

Nash County hotline now offers live operators

Wintry weather caused a delay in Nash County's shipment of COVID vaccines last week but Nash County Health Director Bill Hill said 1,500 first doses arrived on Monday morning and plans are to have all 1,500 doses distributed by the end of the week.
Hill said the 1,500 allotment included last week's 500 first doses plus 1,000 first doses this week.

Elks donate picnic tables to Glover Park

Since relocating to Nashville, the Rocky Mount Elks Lodge #1038 has made it a point to show the community its dedication to giving back.
It's most recent contribution was a donation of three picnic tables to Glover Park.
Members of the lodge met this past Saturday to put the metal tables together.

An independent community for seniors will open this summer in Nashville.
Hadley Ridge is currently under construction behind Robertson Realty on East Washington Street.
"Hadley Ridge is located within a short walk of Piggly Wiggly, dollar stores, convenience stores and other retail properties," said Holly Smith, Owner/Manager of Ilex Properties.

Insurance and health care could use some changes

When I saw I had mail from my insurance company, I figured the news was not good. The envelope was too big for a note that said, "We goofed."
Sure enough, it was a rejection to cover a medicine a doctor says I need.
My wife Kristi says she doesn't think it's the company trying to get even for the $2 million bill for parts and labor from my liver transplant.

Don't ever tell a Coopers Community citizen something "can't be done!"
The Nash County Miracle Park at Coopers opened last week featuring some pretty awesome playground equipment and athletic fields.
The idea of such a place in the Coopers Community was a mere conversation prior to 2007.

RMPD investigates Moye Court shooting, two injured

Rocky Mount Police are investigating a shooting that injured two people.
Police responded to a shooting with injury in the 100 block of Moye Court on February 18 around 10 p.m. When officers arrived, they located two victims, a 16-year-old female and a 36-year-old female.

Rocky Mount hosts tree give-away

The City of Rocky Mount Tree Advisory Board will give away free Southern Crab Apple tree seedlings on March 1st at the drive-thru exit at the Business Services Center located at 224 S. Franklin Street. The event will last from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the limit is two trees per person while supplies last.
The Southern Crab Apple is a small deciduous tree that grows 20 to 30 feet in height.

Kendall Edgar of Nashville, turned eight years-old on February 23rd. Instead of receiving birthday gifts, she wanted to help animals in shelters. She insisted for people to bring animal food instead of giving her a gift.
Kendall collected 66 oz of wet cat food, 131.90 pounds of dry cat food, 20 pounds of cat litter, one box of dog treats, one pack of denta stixs, 330 oz of wet dog food, and 431.6 pounds of dry dog food.
