Nash County moves to group 4

Nash County began scheduling appointments for the first part of Group 4 on Wednesday, March 17, following state guidelines to move forward ahead of schedule.

Group 4 includes those with high-risk medical conditions, as well as people living in close group settings.

High-risk conditions can include asthma, cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, heart conditions, pregnancy, diabetes, and those with a weakened immune system.

The rest of Group 4, essential workers not yet vaccinated, will be able to schedule appointments beginning April 7.

All county providers have administered a combined total of 18,630 first-dose shots. The second-dose total is 9,508.

People who have received their second dose are now fully vaccinated, and this number is greater than 10 percent of Nash County's population.

Nash County Health Director Bill Hill has reported a total of 10,183 first and second-dose shots administered by the Health Department alone. "We are using our entire allocation every week, proving that there is a need for vaccine in our area," Hill said. "In the next few weeks, we hope to receive special event vaccine that we will administer at clinics for local industry and our agricultural community."

A list of Nash County vaccine providers can be found on the county's Facebook page or at www.nashcountync.gov. If you are eligible and interested in receiving vaccine from the Nash County Health Department, call the COVID-19 hotline at 252-462-2079.

A SWEET VICK-TORY
A SWEET VICK-TORY

STANHOPE -- Two-game regular season football losing streaks are unheard of in recent memory at Southern Nash -- even if both losses came on the road in the final minutes against Class 4-A opposition in Wake County.
But the Firebirds bounced back in style last Friday as they opened their Big East Conference schedule at home with a 41-39 thriller over the Wilson Fike Golden Demons.

Over 25,000 fully vaccinated in Nash County

After just over a year of battling COVID-19, Nash County Health Director Bill Hill says the county is finally starting to defeat the virus.
Hill said last week during an update that metrics continue to show improvements in the county.
Last Wednesday, Hill reported the lowest number of cases he'd seen in a 48-hour period in a while.

What the heck is a Carolinian?
It's gone beyond the pale for me to constantly see and hear references to "Carolina" or see a commercial directed to "Carolinians."
This term has been out of date since 1719 (or 1729 if you want to be picky) when the Lords Proprietors -- a very soft name for a gang, if you ask me -- split up the Carolinas because of the Barbecue Sauce Wars.

Boycotting doesn't solve a difference of opinion
Boycotting doesn't solve a difference of opinion

Spring Hope, like many small towns, is dealing with issues stemming from poorly maintained historical buildings in its downtown.
When driving through Spring Hope's downtown, the first thing that catches one's eye, in my opinion, is the beautiful majestic pieces of architecture.
I probably spent just as much time in Spring Hope's downtown as a child as I did Nashville due to the fact I spent a lot of time with my much older sister. She was married, owned a factory in town and resided just outside of town.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor, In what is truly one of the most horrific stories of recent times, some twenty-seven children from Mexico were involved in a traffic wreck in California. The children were presumably being smuggled across the border into the United States.
There are more children than ever at the border posed for similar smuggling operations no doubt.

Where does your food come from?

Where does your food come from? If you're like many Americans, the answer is the grocery store, which is disturbing. The grocery store isn't where food comes from - it's just from where it's distributed. In reality, far too many people are unaware of the role of American agriculture in their daily lives . . . and what it really takes to have food on their dinner table.

CRACKING UP!

In the U.S. in 1998, hens produced 6,657,000,000 dozen eggs - that's 6.657 billion dozen! After these eggs were laid, about two-thirds were sold in the shell and one third of them were broken - not by accident, but on purpose. Because after the eggs are broken out of their shells, they can be made into liquid, frozen, dried and specialty egg products.

"Return, you backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings." (Jeremiah 3:22)

Holy and Whole: Patterns for Life Together
Holy and Whole: Patterns for Life Together

Though St. Patrick's Day was yesterday, I still thought it good to share some thoughts concerning him.
St. Patrick's Day really is a perfect recipe for trouble. For instance, it's right smack in the middle of March, which means warmer weather, Spring Break has just ended for college students and will soon be here for high school students.
