ROCKY MOUNT -- The Big East Conference swim scene will be a bit different this winter as Nash Central has moved into the competitive league, while usually-tough Wilson Fike and Wilson Hunt have moved on.
Roanoke Rapids, another school with a solid pool pedigree, will also join the Big East, but the eight-team conference will convene just one time during the regular season to go with a campaign-ending league championship.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College men's basketball team won a thriller against rival Averett University by a score of 66-61 last Saturday afternoon in the Bishops' Conference USA South opener on the NCWC campus.
Senior wing Damon McDowell led all scorers with 26 points on 9 of 15 shooting overall with 4 three-pointers while also grabbing 6 rebounds, with one assist and one steal.

STANHOPE -- Southern Nash won't be traveling too far to take part in a holiday basketball tournament this year.
The Firebirds' boys and girls will both be making the quick journey to Wilson County for the annual Wilson Christmas Tournament at Hunt High School.
Action will begin on December 28 and run through the championship contests on December 30.

BUNN -- Not since the Whitney Bunn-Alexus Hill days of over one decade ago had Bunn and Northern Nash met in girls basketball action.
But judging by the intensity of last Friday's showdown between the schools, this rivalry might be heating up again -- now in the ultra-competitive Big East Conference.

BUNN -- Northern Nash and Bunn have been facing off on the basketball court for years, but last Friday night marked the inaugural meeting between the two schools as conference foes.
In what was an ugly game riddled with turnovers and shooting woes, it was the Northern Nash Knights who emerged victorious, squeaking out a 53-49 win over the Wildcats in Big East Conference action at the Bunn Dome.

NASH COUNTY -- During the off-season, Isaiah Gay was given the option to return to the University of Illinois football program for one more campaign as a fifth-year senior due to COVID-19 rules put into place by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Gay, a Northern Nash High School alum, accepted the chance -- not knowing he would become part of history.

Visitors of the Nash County Courthouse now have the opportunity to view our nation's Charters of Freedom which includes our founding documents, the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.

Spring Hope's Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Christmas in Spring Hope Friday night. Coloring with Santa was offered and a chance to give him a Christmas wish list. Horse drawn carriage rides around the downtown area were popular with visitors of the event. Merchants were open for business and pop-up vendors were on site along with hot cocoa and food.

After devoting 22 years to the Nash County Sheriff's Office, Sergeant Albert Finch is starting fresh and heading near the beach.
Finch began his law enforcement career at the county's sheriff's office March 2000. His first assignment was the role of detention officer. After six months, he enrolled in Nash Community College's second basic law enforcement training academy.

The Impact Center at Word Tabernacle Church held a ribbon cutting ceremony December 8 for a new center inside of the building that was built for creativity, faith and events.

A Castalia resident who was issued a letter for violating the town's chicken ordinance is asking for reasonable accommodations to be in compliance.
Castalia Mayor James Alston said Debra Sjoberg was sent a letter in October regarding a breach of the town's chicken and honeybee ordinance.
The chicken and honeybee ordinance was passed in 2016 enabling residents to own chickens and bees with certain restrictions which are having a limit of five hens, no roosters, and coops must be located behind a residence.

Nashville's Town Council approved final changes to the land donation agreement for the Nashville Junction last Tuesday night.
The agreement is between the Town of Nashville and Hurt, LLC on Hurt's donation of land for the parking, pavilion and audience area at the Nashville Junction.
Mark Edwards, the town's attorney, made changes suggested last month and presented those changes to council members.

Nash County Health Department Director Bill Hill said COVID cases in the county are about the same as last week.
He said over the past week there has been 143 new cases which brings the county to 15,714 confirmed cases.
As of Tuesday, he said 9 people were hospitalized and none are in the ICU nor have been vaccinated.
